Brooke Renteria moved to a studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, from California two years ago. The unit of less than 400 square feet in Caesura, an apartment building cater-corner from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, came with a Murphy bed, a built-in table/desk and a 49-inch smart TV. Ms. Renteria, who is 24 and works in tech, also had access to the building’s Common Goods room, a basement closet stocked with household items that residents could check out for free. Among the dozens of objects: a sewing machine, a Ninja professional blender and a white porcelain dinner service for 12. When the 12-story building with 123 units opened in 2018, its 34 furnished micro studios started at $2,588 a month for 314 square feet.

Rising at the edge of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal — a rezoned superfund site with developers racing to build — the colossal industrial relic known locally as the Batcave has found its own Bruce Wayne. Consider it his gift to Gotham. On May 19, the nonprofit organization celebrates its grand opening, inviting a broad swath of the art world, city government and local residents to tour its state-of-the-art facilities designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with PBDW Architects. The conceptual artist Lorna Simpson, who’s collaborated with Powerhouse’s print shop, sees all kinds of opportunities for cross-pollination between media in the new building. “I really had ceramic envy walking through Powerhouse,” Simpson said, imagining that artists will have ideas that “can branch into something else that happens within the building because you can easily look at samples or have a conversation about technique.”
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame named its latest inductees on Wednesday: Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners will join the institution’s ranks at its 38th annual ceremony on Nov. 3. The class of 2023 pays homage to rock ‘n’ roll’s roots by including artists across racial and genre lines, from hip-hop (a descendant of the blues) to country, to reflect the music’s diverse, heterogeneous origins. This year’s awards also acknowledge the particular achievements of hip-hop—“the new rock ‘n’ roll,” as John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, put it in an interview. The induction ceremony will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York, the birthplace of hip-hop, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Picture yourself on a sojourn in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Then again, with the variety of games on hand at nearly every one of the Catskills’ newest wave of stylish resorts, there should be more than one option that tickles your fancy. The influence of New York City, Brooklyn in particular, has been palpable in the Catskills — about 100 miles northwest of the metro area — for years. About a decade ago, indie hotels like the Graham & Co. in Phoenicia and Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper imported urban cool to the country with their Moroccan poufs, Tivoli radios and linen bedding. It was where one of the country’s earliest resorts, ‌the Catskill Mountain House, made its home in 1824, followed by hundreds of others.
When a Walkable City Becomes a Death Trap

Last year saw 257 traffic fatalities in the city; just one fewer than there had been nine years ago, when Vision Zero began. The pandemic managed both to confirm and undermine New York’s reputation as the most walkable city in the country. Speeding and reckless driving were the leading causes of traffic deaths, and in 2021 they reached their highest point in the Vision Zero era. Nationally, there were more pedestrian deaths in 2021 than there had been in 40 years. Under Vision Zero, the Department of Transportation was tasked with identifying “priority corridors” — those stretches where pedestrian deaths and serious injuries are most concentrated.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and center Anthony Davis had strong performances to help lead LA to a big 111-101 win over the Grizzlies in front of a sold-out crowd at Staples Center on Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven first round NBA Playoff series. Brooks was ejected from Game 3 for a flagrant 2 foul on LeBron James. Anthony Davis had a massive night, racking up 31 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks. Wally Skalij/Los Angeles Times/Getty ImagesAfter the game, James said that the game wasn’t about making a “statement” to Brooks and the rest of the Grizzlies. Sixers forward Tobias Harris led the way for Philly with 25 points and 12 rebounds in what is Brooklyn’s second straight first-round sweep.
Do You Even Decarbonize, Bro?

Decarb bros believe it’s all going to be OK. And the bros, a loose affiliation of mostly young researchers, climate tech workers, policymakers and people following along online, believe in making fun of themselves, at least a little. See: “Decarb bros,” a term they have embraced regardless of gender identity or weight-lifting ability. “We are against doomerism,” said Billy Casagrande, who works at Scale Microgrids, a climate tech start-up. The consensus among young people seems to be “that we are screwed as it relates to climate,” the self-described decarb bro, who is 25, continued.
Just after Kimberly Lauren France and Paul Richard Green met on Tinder in early April 2021, Mr. Green floated an idea. Ms. France, who goes by Kim, agreed to the plan, but told Mr. Green that his search would uncover her age, which wasn’t listed on the app. “Just so you know, I’m older than you,” she texted him days before their April 10 meeting in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The careers of Ms. France and Mr. Green churn up plenty for internet sleuthing. In 1999, Ms. France, 59, was the founding editor of the Condé Nast shopping magazine Lucky.
A Skeptic’s Tour of New York City’s Natural Wine Bars

ON THE CASE Lettie Teague ventured into the natural wine bars of New York City with an open mind and a battery of questions for the bartenders. I’ve had some natural wines that were pleasant and many that were not. So I decided to taste the wines in their natural habitat: natural-wine bars. You can find natural-wine bars all over the world, and New York City—on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, in particular—is a real stronghold. If I was going to get a clearer impression of natural wine and perhaps taste some better wines, these New York neighborhoods seemed like good places to start.

OVER THE LAST decade, backbars across the U.S. have filled up with colorful, ornately labeled bottles of amaro, an Italian liqueur infused with herbs, roots and/or spices. The bitter option pulls from the often more than 15 amari (including Italian and domestic options) in stock. In fall and winter, amari mingle with aged spirits, like whiskey, often on the rocks. In the spring, they find their way into spritzes or drinks made with clear spirits like gin or tequila. There’s only one rule, said general manager Brittany Tinelli, who selects the spirits at Roman’s: “The bitter needs to be the star.”
NYPD officer Baimadajie Angwang held a news briefing outside Brooklyn’s Federal court after a judge dismissed the spy charges against him on Thursday. A federal judge on Thursday dismissed an indictment against a New York Police Department officer accused of spying for the Chinese government, after prosecutors made an uncommon request to drop the 2020 charges against him. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn sought the dismissal last week in the case of Baimadajie Angwang, who faced charges including acting as an illegal agent of a foreign country, wire fraud and making false statements on a security clearance application as an Army reservist.

The man accused of one of the most violent rampages on New York City's public transportation system in years is expected to plead guilty to terrorism charges in the Brooklyn subway shooting, authorities said. Frank James' lawyer filed paperwork Wednesday indicating he would enter a guilty plea in the April 12 attack, and a hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 3. Ten people were shot and 13 others were injured in the gunfire and smoke bomb attack on a Brooklyn subway, which shook the city and set off a 30-hour manhunt before James was arrested in Manhattan. “The defendant committed a premeditated mass shooting on the New York City subway system and then fled the scene, with a stockpile of ammunition and other dangerous items stowed in his storage unit,” the federal prosecutors wrote. James pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn federal court the same month.
The New York City bishop who was robbed of around $1 million in jewelry during a livestreamed service in July was arrested Monday morning and is facing fraud and extortion charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. CNN —NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that suspended Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving is not antisemitic following a meeting between the two earlier in the week, the commissioner told the New York Times. Silver, who is Jewish, told the Times that the two had “a direct and candid conversation” at the league’s headquarters in New York. While the NBA did not hand down its own suspension to Irving, Silver said the punishment “got to the right outcome,” acknowledging the criticism the league faced for not suspending Irving sooner. Silver told the audience that Amazon bore some of the responsibility for having the film on its platform. Silver said the Nets along with the league will consult to decide when Irving can return from suspension.

Sherlock Holmes had unimpeachable inductive reasoning and a cocaine habit. Hercule Poirot had “enormous moustaches.” Avraham Avraham ? The creation of Israeli crime novelist Dror Mishani , Avraham (Jeff Wilbusch) begins his days in a shawl and tefillin praying on his roof near Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Bridge; when he says he grew up in Crown Heights, he means Orthodox Crown Heights. When he encounters a dead body on the street, as he does at the outset of episode 1 of “The Calling,” he murmurs holy words of Hebrew over the body. And when a teenager goes mysteriously missing, he sits on the boy’s bed, to better sense his subject’s whereabouts and, possibly, the unsettled spiritual-emotional atmosphere that may have inspired the disappearance.
“To that end, we’ve made the decision to suspend our relationship with Kyrie Irving effective immediately and will no longer launch the Kyrie 8. Reporters asked Irving earlier Thursday – before he posted his apology – if he holds antisemitic beliefs or if he was sorry. When asked Friday if there was any consideration of releasing Irving, Nets general manager Sean Marks replied, “No. Asked if he had any antisemitic beliefs, Irving responded: “I respect all walks of life. “Kyrie Irving made a reckless decision to post a link to a film containing deeply offensive antisemitic material,” Silver said in a statement before Irving apologized.

Steve Nash Is Gone, and the Brooklyn Nets Reboot. Again.

Whatever is wrong with the Brooklyn Nets, and there is plenty— disaster doesn’t feel like an adequate rendering for this chronically chaotic professional basketball outfit, 2-5 entering Tuesday’s play—it is not principally the doing of Steve Nash. But because these are impatient times, and a scapegoat must be offered, and players are expensive and/or immovable, it is Nash on his way out of town after a Tuesday uncoupling charitably rebranded as a parting of the ways. Surely Nash, a former two-time NBA MVP known for his court vision, sensed it was coming. The job he took at the beginning of the 2020-21 season bears no resemblance to the shamble to be inherited by Brooklyn’s next hire, perhaps Ime Udoka—yes, that’s right, the Nets are reportedly interested in the head coach the Boston Celtics suspended in September for an entire season for what was murkily described as “violations of team policies.” Confronting crisis with crisis! You couldn’t make this team up if you tried.
Rolling Loud New York is scheduled to take place at Citi Field in Queens, New York this weekend, but three drill rappers initially expected to perform have been axed from the lineup. The NYPD’s actions mirror what happened at Rolling Loud New York in 2019, when the department banned 22Gz and fellow drill rapper Pop Smoke from hitting the stage. Neither the NYPD, Mayor Adams or Rolling Loud have released an official statement. However, the organizers of the festival graciously agreed to pay Sha Ek for the canceled performance. If Rolling Loud wants to put you guys on, then they won’t have a permit.’But Rolling Loud was like, ‘We’re still going to honor the payment.
Bishop Lamor Whitehead, 44, was preaching at the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries church in Brooklyn’s Canarsie neighborhood when someone in the congregation started yelling inaudibly off-camera. As a woman approaches him, video appears to show the bishop grabbing her hair by the back of her neck and pushing her off-camera. Police said the woman, identified as 47-year-old Tarsha Howard, was recording the church service. When asked to stop and leave the church, she "began to antagonize the parish Bishop and approached him on stage. Whitehead disputed that in a video posted to Facebook, saying the NYPD arrested him and put him in a holding cell.
