CNN —The United Auto Workers union surprised Ford with a major escalation of its strike, ordering workers off the job at the company’s largest plant. “We have been crystal clear, and we have waited long enough, but Ford has not gotten the message,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. He said that the union wanted a different offer from Ford from what it had presented before. The UAW has been on strike against not only Ford, but also General Motors and Stellantis, since September 15. By hitting the Kentucky Truck Plant, the union is going after a much more profitable part of Ford’s line-up.

DETROIT – Ford Motor's third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales increased 7.7% compared with a year earlier, led by higher sales of traditional pickup trucks across its lineup. The Detroit automaker on Wednesday reported a 15.3% increase in truck sales compared with a 5.1% decline in cars and sales of SUVs that were essentially flat. The automaker's sales of electric vehicles were up by 14.8% during the quarter to nearly 21,000 units. Ford hybrid sales, led by the F-150 and Maverick hybrid trucks, posted third-quarter sales of 34,861 vehicles – up 41.4% over a year earlier. An ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Detroit automakers, including Ford, was not expected to directly impact sales much during the quarter.

New York CNN —US new car sales soared in the third quarter, despite the combination of a strike at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, high prices and rising interest rates. “New-vehicle sales have remained somewhat consistent as pent-up demand keeps sales afloat despite economic challenges,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds’ head of insights. “However, the landscape can change dramatically, and quickly, if the strike continues.”Rising ratesAnother factor that could slow sales at all automakers is rising interest rates, which is raising the average car payment to record levels. The investigation covers 2021 and 2022 model year Ford Bronco, Edge, Explorer, and F-150 and Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus vehicles. A Ford spokeswoman said the automaker was working with NHTSA to support their investigation. NHTSA said it had reports of 328 customer complaints and 487 warranty claims relating to the vehicles under investigation. Ford added it believed “defective intake valves commonly fail early in a vehicle’s life and has suggested that the majority of failures have already occurred.”

DETROIT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Talks were ongoing on Wednesday between union representatives and company management in the sixth day of the United Auto Workers strike at the Detroit Three automakers, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a walkout by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. The UAW's coordinated U.S. action led to about 12,700 workers going on strike last week. Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in that country if a deal was not reached by late on Tuesday.

Unifor had sought improved wages and pensions, as well as support in the transition to electric vehicles and additional investment commitments by Ford. The Canadian union will now turn to getting deals with General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI), whose deadlines had been extended while the Ford talks proceeded. The UAW has said it will announce strikes against more U.S. plants on Friday if no serious progress is made in talks with automakers. Many UAW workers are most concerned about the tiered wage structure that they say has created a yawning gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet.
