☆ Tropical Storm Helene: Thousands forced to evacuate in Florida as hurricane warnings issued

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

Pest control maker Rentokil Initial said Wednesday that Trian partner Brian Baldwin would join the Terminix owner's board effective next week. The company said Baldwin, who has worked at Nelson Peltz's firm since 2007, will also join the nominating and compensation committees. The accession comes three months after Trian first disclosed a roughly $400 million position in Rentokil, and two weeks after the company issued a profit warning. Peltz's Trian has a long history of turning around struggling businesses, largely in the consumer sector. In fact, the S & P 500 is on pace for a winning September — its first since 2019 — with a gain of more than 1%. The month is typically the worst stretch of the year on average for all three major averages and the Russell 2000, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Some of September's strength could be attributed to the Federal Reserve's supersized rate cut last week . The S & P 500 notched a fresh record close on Monday and an intraday all-time high on Tuesday. The benchmark S & P 500 typically pulls back nearly 1% on average in October in election years, per the Stock Trader's Almanac.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury was more than 4 basis points higher at 3.789%, while the 2-year Treasury yield rose 2 basis points to trade at 3.597%. U.S. Treasury yields were higher on Tuesday as market participants awaited fresh economic data and further comments from Federal Reserve officials. The 10-year Treasury yield ended last week almost 8 basis points higher after the U.S. central bank lowered interest rates by 50 basis points on Wednesday. "I think after 50 basis points, we're still in a net tight position," Kashkari said in a CNBC "Squawk Box" interview. On the data front, consumer confidence data for September and Richmond Fed surveys for September are both scheduled to be released at 10 a.m.

Starbucks shares may be due for some downside, according to Jefferies. Analyst Andy Barish downgraded the stock to underperform from hold and cut its price target by $4 to $76. While shares have already fallen about 0.6% this year, they have surged around 24% since the CEO announcement. Barish expects there to be low visibility in China and the U.S. in the near term and sees fiscal 2025 guidance coming in lower than expected. He thinks the long-term growth algorithm should be revised lower as well.

New York CNN —More than 400 economists and former high-ranking US policymakers are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and her vision for the American economy, according to a document announcing the endorsement seen by CNN. “The choice in this election is clear: between failed trickle-down economic policies that benefit the few and economic policies that provide opportunity for all,” the endorsement document reads. Harris plans to roll out new policies on what she calls the “opportunity economy” during a speech in Pennsylvania, another key battleground state, on Wednesday. Several notable economists threw their weight behind Harris, including University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers and Claudia Goldin, who won the Nobel Prize last year for tracking women’s labor participation and the evolving wage gap. The endorsement argued that Harris has a “proven track record of economic leadership,” crediting her with efforts as vice president to lower costs, cut taxes and raise wages.

New York CNN —Finally, an emoji to represent us all is coming soon: An exhausted face with bags under its eyes. It’s one of eight new emoji that will appear on smartphones and computers next year, which also include a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a fingerprint, a shovel, a purple splatter, and a flag for the remote island in the English Channel called Sark. Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, released sample images a few months ago. Recently, the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit that oversees global emoji standards and new releases approved the new emoji lineup. The exhausted emoji face had the honors of winning the “most anticipated” emoji in the World Emoji Awards receiving more than 60% of the vote.
