Read previewAbout a year ago, I signed up for an American Express checking account. I canceled my American Express Rewards checking account just a year after opening. It came as a shock to me that it wasn't available with an Amex checking account and defeated a large purpose of opening this account. It was hard to deposit and transfer moneyAmerican Express makes it incredibly difficult to fund the Amex Rewards checking account. The APY wasn't competitiveBecause of its limited functionality, I ended up using my Amex Rewards checking account as a sort of savings account.

1 reason to use a business bank account. However, it is essential that you do not overlook the value of opening a business bank account — usually both a business checking account and a high-yield business savings account. Here are four things I tell my business owner clients to consider when choosing a business bank account. Ease of paying contractorsSome business bank accounts, especially online accounts, offer free invoicing and bookkeeping software/features. If you use accounting software (such as QuickBooks) to manage your business finances, accessing a business bank account that offers integration features may be desirable.

CNN —Officials in Georgia’s Fulton County, which includes parts of Atlanta, said Wednesday that “financially motivated” hackers appeared to be behind a ransomware attack that has disrupted key county services for weeks. The leak will only up the stakes for Fulton County to get a handle on a cyberattack that has hobbled services for weeks. The group that claimed Fulton County as a victim is a prolific group known as LockBit. It’s unclear if there has been any communication between Fulton County and the hackers. Fulton County’s ransomware attack comes amid a years-long effort by the US government to limit the damage of ransomware attacks on local governments, hospitals and other critical infrastructure.

A bullish options bet on a rallying fintech into earnings

Nevertheless, we're going to take advantage of lower- than-average longer-dated options premiums in an e-commerce payment services company to frame a modestly bullish bet going into earnings. Companies might beat earnings expectations but still see their stock price fall due to other factors like future earnings guidance, revenue quality, or broader market conditions. Guidance: Companies often provide forward-looking statements or guidance about future earnings and performance during their earnings calls, which can have an immediate and unpredictable impact on their stock price. Analyst expectations: The market's reaction can be more about how the actual earnings compare to analyst expectations rather than the earnings themselves. In some cases though, the options market is not anticipating particularly sharp moves, and this may present an opportunity.

While there's no universal minimum credit score to rent an apartment, landlords generally prefer applicants with a good credit score, which is at least 670. While your credit score will suffice for some landlords, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, landlords are also allowed to view your credit reports. The average credit score of a Gen Z consumer is 680 compared to the average baby boomer's credit score of 745. Though these services won't directly help you build credit, keeping track of your credit score is a crucial part of the credit building process. New York CNN —Some customers still haven’t received their direct deposit paychecks following a “human error” last week deep in the plumbing of America’s banking system. The deposit delays are linked to a problem that emerged on Friday with the Automated Clearing House (ACH) payments system, causing headaches for consumers and employers. An industry source confirmed to CNN on Monday that it’s likely some customers haven’t received their deposits yet. Clearing house says it was a ‘manual error’Asked for comment, multiple banks referred inquiries to The Clearing House, which is owned by the largest commercial banks including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, CitiBank and Wells Fargo. The Clearing House did not provide an updated comment on Monday or any timetable for when the problem will be fully resolved.

Elliott Appel, a financial planner in Madison, Wis., and the founder of Kindness Financial Planning, helps families, often caregivers, navigate shifting roles and responsibilities. An introduction lets him know whom to reach out to in case of trouble. “Then it becomes: First let’s acknowledge that this is going to be a challenging conversation, because most people don’t want to give up control of their money,” Mr. Appel said. Once that hurdle is cleared, a talk about designating a trusted contact, or someone who will eventually take over, can take shape. In some cases, the trusted contact can start with a few tasks, then take on more responsibilities as time goes on, he said.

Pound's mini-budget dip made UK's Brexit bill dearer
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Andy Bruce | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
In previous years, the Treasury's "reportable losses" have ranged between zero and a few million pounds. This 855 million-euro payment cost Britain 764 million pounds on a day when 1 pound would buy only 1.12 euros. Back in April 2022, when the EU updated Britain's payment schedule for June through September, it assumed an exchange rate of around 1.18 euros per pound - equating to monthly payments of 719 million pounds rather than 764 million pounds. Still, that small net gain represents a sharp drop from March 2022 when it stood at 91.2 million pounds - with the payment on Sept. 30 a conspicuous loss-maker. Economists put the broader costs of the mini-budget episode - stemming from loss of investor confidence and higher market interest rates - in the billions of pounds.

How to Build Credit Without a Credit Card
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( Emily Sherman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +11 min
The problem: The best way to build your credit score is to make regular payments on your credit card — and often you can’t get a credit card until you already have a good credit score. Become an authorized userThe fastest and easiest way to build your credit score — if it’s an option for you — is for a family member or friend with a good credit to add you as an authorized user to their credit card. Once a cardholder adds you to their account, you’ll get your own credit card, earn rewards (if applicable) and get credit for on-time payments and a credit utilization ratio. Get a secured credit cardIf you don’t have any of the loans listed here or find you need another option for building credit, a credit card is still an option. Specifically designed for those just getting started building credit, secured credit cards use a deposit as collateral to reduce risk, so even those with poor credit can qualify.

The Federal Reserve launched its FedNow instant-payments service Thursday, following several years of developing a system officials say will allow the faster flow of cash for businesses and individuals. "The Federal Reserve built the FedNow Service to help make everyday payments over the coming years faster and more convenient," Fed Chair Jerome Powell said. The American Bankers Association said it welcomes the FedNow developments, noting that the central bank joins the Clearing House, which put its payments service online in 2017, as two major providers in the space. There are still some outstanding questions about FedNow, such as whether banks will charge for the service. As FedNow goes online, Fed officials are studying the implementation of a central bank digital currency, with some saying they think FedNow could mitigate the need for a CBDC.

Despite the growing concern of heat-related illnesses and climate change, people have far fewer protections from power shutoffs during the summer than they do in the winter. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has about $6 billion in funds for fiscal 2023, which runs through September. The association is calling on Congress to provide an additional $3 billion for cooling assistance this summer, which would help about 6 million households. And it is asking utilities to voluntarily suspend shutoffs this summer for those behind on their bills. Florida Power & Light, for instance, has a longstanding policy that it won’t disconnect customers if it’s 95 degrees or higher.
