Many tech workers in California moved to Austin during the pandemic in search of a new lifestyle. Some tech workers say they regret moving there, given its middling tech scene and "fake" atmosphere. They cited several contributing factors, including extreme temperatures, traffic, overcrowding, and — perhaps most surprising — a middling tech scene that fails to live up to the hype. From Silicon Valley to the Silicon HillsNot long ago, Austin's tech scene was ascendant, with national headlines suggesting it could take on Silicon Valley. He acknowledged there's not much of a tech scene there but will take that over what he perceived as Austin's smoke and mirrors.

Isabel Heine was an early user of Airbnb but now she only stays at hotels. Heine also says that the Airbnb cleaning fees and rules were getting ridiculous. I used Airbnb for about a decade straight before I started having second thoughtsI started noticing high cleaning fees that just seemed ridiculous to me. Add that to the increased costs and rules of staying in an Airbnb and I'm officially back to hotels. I did miss having a kitchen to cook my own food in, which is one of the pros with so many Airbnbs.

A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. Peter Titmuss/UCG/Universal Images Group/Getty ImagesCornwall: Dear to local and international tourists alike, Cornwall, on the southwestern tip of the UK pointing out into the Atlantic Ocean, is also a special destination for the royal family. The medieval parish church of St Mary Magdalene is regularly used as a place of worship by members of the royal family and dates back to the 16th-century.

WASHINGTON — It’s shocking how easy it is to imagine Donald Trump campaigning for the presidency from prison. Maybe he’d even be able to smuggle in his special Tang-colored hair bleach. It wouldn’t be the first time someone tried for the White House from the Big House. In 1920, after being imprisoned on sedition charges for excoriating American involvement in World War I, which he considered a capitalistic war, Eugene Debs won about 900,000 votes as the Socialist Party nominee. “I will be a candidate at home in seclusion,” he joked when asked how he would campaign.

Lauren CobelloMy old house sold in a dayMy old house sold in a day for $185,000 — $16,000 above the asking price. The old house had room for plenty of sleepovers; we would host large ones for birthdays, but we can't do that in the new house. Cobello's new home (right) is about a third of the size of her old house. In the old house, my monthly expenses included $350 on property taxes, around $26 on garbage collection, and close to $66 on water. After paying off my mortgage on the old house, my proceeds from selling it will be around $55,000.

Marc Hamer was “the gardener,” someone who — for a portion of each day, over a career’s worth of years — knelt for hire, often pulling weeds. He knew that his employers in the big house, wine glasses in hand, would look out and see him in his posture of humility and perhaps say, “The gardener is here,” as if he were nameless and this was his only purpose on earth. But no matter. “It felt like prayer; it felt like I was actually humbling myself, bowing to the universe.”A garden is a place of work, yes. But for anyone with the soul of a gardener — no matter their level of expertise — it is also something else.

Sen. Angus King, a Maine independent, told Insider the lack of affordable housing is "a national crisis." Maine is facing a severe shortage as it's welcomed a surge of new residents in recent years. The law also eliminated all single-family zoning, eliminates some regulatory restrictions on multi-unit homes, and incentivizes the construction of affordable housing. New Mainers, though welcomed in an aging state in need of more workers, have exacerbated the housing shortage. A lack of affordable housing is central: the state housing authority reported last year that the average price of a house in nearly every county in Maine was unaffordable for the average household income.

And by gobbling up intellectual property and broadcasting rights, Disney continues to be virtually inescapable.

But in Sweden, the structural problems rooted in its housing market are magnifying the effects. Banking group Nordea (NDAFI.HE) expects household consumption to fall around 2% in 2023, while the National Board of Housing expects housing starts to fall around 50% in the coming year compared with 2021. "However, in the last few months, the interest rate has almost tripled making it almost unaffordable to survive," Logan said. Sweden's banks are among the most strongly capitalised in Europe - partly as a result of worries about the housing market. But Sweden's economy is likely to remain a hostage to imbalances in the housing market while its structural problems go unresolved.
