In June, the Education Department approved a $5.8 billion loan discharge for former Corinthian students. Six months later, borrowers are still waiting, and the department said relief will now take "some time." Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said at the time that the impacted Corinthian borrowers will see their loans "immediately forgiven." This prompted Biden's Education Department to reform the process. Still, aside from the June announcement of relief, none of the Education Department's recent actions are giving Corinthian borrowers any certainty.

CNN —Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of failed blood testing startup Theranos who was convicted of fraud earlier this year, is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday morning by a judge in court in San Jose, California. The list includes Holmes’ partner, Billy Evans, many members of Holmes’ and Evans’ families, early Theranos investor Tim Draper, and Sen. Cory Booker. Elizabeth Holmes (L), founder of Theranos, and her partner, Billy Evans (R), leave the Robert F. Peckham Federal Building and US Courthouse in San Jose, California, on October 17, 2022. “The effects of Holmes and Balwani’s fraudulent conduct were far-reaching and severe,” federal prosecutors wrote in a November court filing regarding Holmes’ sentencing. “Elizabeth Holmes is never going to run a big company again,” he said.
A federal judge granted final approval of a settlement involving defrauded student-loan borrowers. 200,000 borrowers are expected to get $6 billion in debt relief, and the department will review other pending claims. The 2019 lawsuit was filed in response to a backlog of borrower defense claims that hadn't been processed. The Secretary's improper delay and suspension of processing claims for debt relief has directly led to a specific economic injury to each class member. "It immediately delivers certainty and relief to borrowers who have been waiting years for a fair resolution of their borrower defense claims," she added.
The FEC is asking questions about campaign contributions to Adam Laxalt and Catherine Cortez Masto. Government watchdog OpenSecrets reports that the Cortez Masto and Laxalt campaigns have raised $52.9 million and $15.5 million, respectively, as of October 19. Campaigns must adequately respond to the inquiries or face potential action by the FEC, including audits, investigations, and fines. The FEC reached out to Warnock rival Herschel Walker's campaign in March regarding excessive contributions from 17 supporters. Cortez Masto has until December 12 to respond to the FEC.
Gretchen Whitmer defeated Republican challenger Tudor Dixon on Tuesday, securing her bid for re-election and keeping a Democrat atop the critical swing state, NBC News projects. But Whitmer held on, boosted by tens of millions of dollars in ad spending that Dixon, a former right-wing commentator endorsed by former President Donald Trump, never matched. Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Whitmer, who made the shortlist as Joe Biden searched for a running mate in 2020, has been the subject of future White House speculation. Despite Michigan's swing-state status, Republicans were slow to invest there and never caught up with the other side's spending.
As a result, political observers say, public school funding is effectively on the ballot Tuesday. “These groups have been demonizing what is being taught in public schools, and that’s the fastest way to erode faith that public schools work,” Rottinghaus said. (Abbott publicly came out in support of private school vouchers two months after winning the primary with 66.5% of the vote.) Greg Abbott in the GOP primary, campaigned in support of private school vouchers. “I will never support vouchers.”Rep. John Bucy III said he will continue to oppose private school vouchers.
He’s scheduled to headline a Saturday rally for Dixon and other GOP candidates in the state. Through Nov. 8, Whitmer and the Democrats have reserved $24 million in ads for the Michigan governor’s race. And the two most recent polls have shown Whitmer leading Dixon by double digits. “Isn’t that sad that Democrats have to spend so much money?” Dixon said at a news conference Tuesday when asked if she was disappointed in the lack of assistance for her campaign. The Republican Governors Association still has $3.6 million budgeted for ads in Michigan, though a spokesperson acknowledged the funding gap.
Republicans may also seize on Biden's remarks to challenge his effort to issue student debt relief. It could threaten student debt relief and future coronavirus-related health funding. The remarks suggesting that the emergency has ended may jeopardize twin goals of the Biden administration on student debt relief and coronavirus aid. Part of Biden's legal rationale for providing $10,000 in student debt relief per borrower rests on the lingering pandemic. But some supporters of debt relief don't see it quite that way.
They strategized on what they want to do next: elect their own candidates to school boards, pass state legislation and diminish the influence of teachers unions. “It’s been said we’re some political powerhouse,” said Tiffany Justice, who co-founded Moms for Liberty in January 2021 with Tina Descovich. Moms for Liberty founders Tiffany Justice, left, and Tina Descovich present the Liberty Sword to Gov. “When I’m going up there by myself, the school board overlooks you,” said Ken Davenport, a father from a chapter in Orange County, Florida, who is running for state representative. Ron DeSantis, is joined by her 5-year-old daughter, Madison, after a question and answer session at the Moms for Liberty Summit.
He says he was still paying off his student loans while serving as a Cabinet member. President Biden should use his executive authority to unilaterally cancel student debt for each borrower. I was still paying off my own student loans while serving as US Secretary of Education for President Obama. Some have argued that it would be odd to cancel student debt retroactively without solving the problem going forward. Republican A. Wayne Johnson, former Federal Student Aid chief, proposed canceling up to $50,000 of student debt for each borrower.
