Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza awoke on Wednesday to news of a deal that brought both hope and agony. Israel has said that about 240 people were taken hostage to Gaza, and it remained unclear which of them would be released under the cease-fire deal announced overnight. Hours after the deal was announced, families said they had received no official information from the Israeli authorities. At least 36 Israeli civilians ages 18 and under are being held in Gaza along with 13 of their mothers. People have been calling to congratulate the family since Tuesday night, Ms. Engel Lichi said on Wednesday morning.

There’s a lot of anxiety.”The Israeli government and Hamas announced Wednesday morning that they would uphold a brief cease-fire in Gaza to allow for the release of the hostages. “I’m trying to take care not to be happy too quickly,” Ms. Zailer said on Tuesday. His family in Israel still does not know where he and his brother are being held, whether they are with their parents — or even if they are still alive, Ms. Zailer said. “We are being torn apart,” Ms. Zailer said, calling it an impossible situation. At Kibbutz Nir Oz, 76 people were taken hostage on Oct. 7, according to Irit Lahav, a kibbutz spokeswoman.

Since then, Israel has bombed much of Gaza City to rubble, ordered the depopulation of the entire northern half of the enclave and left homeless around two-thirds of the strip's 2.3 million Palestinians. Israel dropped leaflets over eastern areas of Khan Younis telling people to evacuate to shelters, suggesting that military operations there are imminent. Because the western areas are closer to the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, humanitarian aid could be brought in "as quickly as possible," he said. CNN —A 65-year-old Israeli woman who was kidnapped by Hamas militants on October 7 has been found dead near Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, the Israeli military said Thursday. The body of Yehudit Weiss, a resident of kibbutz Be’eri, was found by Israeli soldiers in Gaza City and brought back to Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. The IDF said her body had been recovered from what it called a “structure” near to the Al-Shifa hospital, where the IDF on Wednesday launched what it called a “precise and targeted” operation against Hamas, which it says has been using the hospital for military purposes. Hamas and hospital officials have consistently rejected Israel’s claims that Hamas has built a command center under the hospital. The Hostages and Missing Person’s Families Forum, a group established by the families of those abducted by Hamas, said Weiss was a 65-year-old grandmother.

After traveling around Israel and the West Bank, I now understand why so much has changed. It is crystal clear to me that Israel is in real danger — more danger than at any time since its War of Independence in 1948. Last Saturday night, a retired Israeli Army commander stopped by my hotel in Tel Aviv to share his perspective on the war. Consider this context: “According to Israel’s official Central Bureau of Statistics, at the end of 2021, 9.449 million people live in Israel (including Israelis in West Bank settlements), the Times of Israel reported last year. Let me not mince words, because the hour is dark and Israel, as I said, is in real danger.

Tel Aviv CNN —Mourning his 8-year-old daughter believed killed in Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel, Thomas Hand said he was at least partially consoled militants had not taken her hostage. “She is more than likely in a tunnel somewhere under Gaza,” Hand told CNN, recalling how the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recently shared new intelligence. Emily Hand, 8, was believed to have been killed during the attack in Be'eri on October 7. The IDF estimates 240 Israeli hostages are being held by Hamas in Gaza, including civilian men, women and children. Thomas Hand said he was told Emily might be alive and taken hostage in Gaza.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. The war plays out on everyone’s screens, forcing people to confront cruelty and killing and to fear what comes next. “Hamas’ mission is, by definition, to end Israel, not to seek to establish a self-governed Palestinian state that peacefully coexists alongside the Jewish state. “An Israeli normalization deal with Saudi Arabia — the location of the two holiest sites in Islam — would be hugely symbolic and have real security benefits for Israel,” wrote Peter Bergen. “After all, almost exactly half a century ago, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, two Arab states, Egypt and Syria, attacked Israel.
