The credits roll, but there is no neat ending for Ms. Jaouad and Mr. Batiste. “None of us know if we’re going to exist in the future, but I have a heightened fear of not existing in the future,” Ms. Jaouad said. Mr. Jones, who introduces himself to her as “Lil GQ,” read her columns while on death row. “It was unbelievable because we were talking in the future tense, knowing that the future wasn’t going to come to pass,” Ms. Jaouad said. But everything is put in proper perspective when life is giving you this sort of moment," he said. It did just that, and it also showed Jaouad going through a second bone marrow transplant while Batiste was winning awards. Batiste has recently been nominated for another five Grammy Awards, and this time around the couple expect to attend the event in 2024 together.

Aldean and Anthony's dominance wasn't long — and Combs did earn a 2024 Grammy nomination for best country solo performance — but Wallen stands out as an obvious exclusion. While “Last Night” is nominated for best country song, a songwriter's award, Wallen himself isn't despite his successful year. Monét has also picked up record of the year and best R&B song nominations for her glossy, brassy “On My Mama,” best R&B performance and best traditional R&B performance. Her 2023 release, “Jaguar ll,” is up for best R&B album and best engineered album, non-classical. Jazz’s future — actually, its present — looks brighter than it has in at least 50 years. In April 2022, Jon Batiste cleaned up at the Grammys, becoming the first jazz musician below retirement age in decades to win album of the year. Young improvisers like him seem less intimidated than ever by jazz’s gloried history, and are dumping their energies into fusions and multimedia projects. For much of Saturday afternoon, when 11 pianists under 30 competed in the semifinals, there was cause to wonder. At one point I started to wonder if there was a rule against bringing in your own original tunes.

In an interview, Kenny G said that Batiste had asked him about the polarized reactions to his work. “You’ve got to play what sounds good to you, and feels good to you,” Kenny G recalled telling him. “Lucky for you, there’s a big audience that seems to like what you do. “To say I love everybody, including Republicans — as a Black guy, I don’t know how that could go,” he said. But the act of removing a certain baseline of humanity in how we approach living amongst each other, that should be radical.

This essay is part of a series called The Big Ideas, in which writers respond to a single question: Who do you think you are? You can read more by visiting The Big Ideas series page. Honestly, I’d probably think that, too. What you don’t hear about is the toil and the sacrifice, the vision and the commitment. You don’t hear about the nights of eating only Goya beans for dinner, wearing borrowed clothes, playing free gigs — the uncertainty, the lack of resources, money and support.
