“This feels like a really precarious spot.”In Pennsylvania, officials estimate 40 of the state’s 67 county election offices have new directors or deputy directors since 2020. In North Carolina, where the Republican Legislature recently moved to gain more control of state and local election boards, roughly a third of 100 county election directors have left since the 2020 election. It's Time to Start Preparing Against Flu, RSV & COVID-19

The flu vaccine is now available in some locations. And new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines are recommended for some. "We should do what we can to protect ourselves — and others — with the best tool we have: the flu vaccine." Not only that, but COVID-19 and RSV could again spike at the same time as the flu, triggering a "tripledemic," Gandhi said. Women who are between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant can also protect their infants at birth by getting a new Pfizer RSV vaccine.

The complex interplay between the transition, policy, economic performance and consumer preferences have made it harder than ever to forecast gasoline demand. Since then, the post-pandemic transition to a hybrid workplace has cut fuel demand for commuting. With the difficulty of predicting where gasoline demand goes from here, the EIA has revised its forecast several times this year. In January, it pegged demand this year at 8.74 million bpd, a fall from 8.76 million bpd last year. JPMorgan estimates that efficiency gains and EV sales wiped around 100,000 bpd from gasoline demand last year.

India banned the exports of non-basmati white rice with immediate effect late Thursday, the latest in the government's effort to rein in high food prices. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs said the ban would help ensure "adequate availability" of non-basmati white rice in India, as well as "allay the rise in prices in the domestic market." India is the world's leading rice exporter, accounting for more than 40% of the global rice trade, as well as the second-largest producer after China. Analysts told CNBC this week's ban could send already elevated prices shooting even higher, compounding effects from the country's September ban on shipments of broken rice. Barre said Bangladesh and Nepal would be hardest hit by the ban, as both countries are top export destinations.

Their town of 2,100 people had suffered some of the worst flooding in the state amid more than seven inches of rain. It was a painful setback for Vermont at the height of its summer tourist season. While much of the state was untouched by the flooding — even in Ludlow, which is in south-central Vermont, some businesses were unscathed — national news coverage of disasters typically leads to a wave of cancellations. In Ludlow — first settled by farmers in 1783, later home to woolen mills powered by the river, and now best known as the home of Okemo Mountain Resort — momentum had been building. Since Vail Resorts bought the ski area in 2018, upgrading lifts and boosting marketing and year-round recreation, new businesses had sprung up to serve new visitors.

CNN —Peru’s health ministry said on Thursday that Corinthians are not at risk of contracting Guillain-Barre syndrome when they visit the country next week after the coach of the Brazilian soccer team voiced concerns about playing in Lima. Guillain-Barre is a very rare and serious condition that affects the nerves, causing problems such as numbness, weakness and pain. Speaking to journalists after Tuesday’s match, he said those responsible for overseeing the tournament should make a decision to protect players. In response to Luxemburgo’s comments, Peru’s health ministry said in a statement that Guillain-Barre is not transmitted from person to person and that the players “are not at risk of contagion” in the country. “In Peru, there is no restriction regarding this disease, whether they are meetings, national or international trips, events, among others,” it said.

Lately The New York Times has asked jazz musicians, writers and scholars to share the favorites that would make a friend fall in love with Herbie Hancock, New Orleans jazz, Sun Ra or Mary Lou Williams. Now we’re putting the spotlight on avant-garde jazz, a challenging subgenre born out of the desire to do something that wasn’t as prescribed as bebop or post-bop, a sound carried by the fire of spontaneity by players who weren’t considered to be in the upper echelon of jazz. The definition of avant-garde jazz has been a point of contention since its inception. Perhaps its biggest public advocate was the saxophonist and bandleader John Coltrane, who took an interest in free jazz — a subset of avant-garde jazz — in the mid-1960s and pushed for the saxophonists Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders to release their music on the mainstream label Impulse! Today, the rules for what is and what isn’t avant-garde are still being written.

FDA approves Pfizer RSV vaccine for older adults
  + stars: | 2023-05-31 | by ( Spencer Kimball | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The approval of Pfizer's vaccine comes just weeks after the FDA cleared a similar shot targeting RSV that is made by GSK . RSV causes mild symptoms similar to a cold in most people but older adults face a higher risk of severe illness. The virus kills 6,000 to 10,000 older adults and hospitalizes 60,000 to 160,000 of them every year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA's committee of independent advisors endorsed Pfizer's vaccine in February. Pfizer has also developed a vaccine to protect newborns from RSV.

Each year, about 60,000 adults 65 and older are hospitalized with R.S.V. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that in one year, more than 21,000 people in that age group would need to take the GSK vaccine to prevent one R.S.V. Several treatments, including a maternal vaccine and a monoclonal antibody for infants against R.S.V., are under agency review. The GSK vaccine, called Arexvy, was nearly 83 percent effective against severe R.S.V. The final vote of the F.D.A.’s advisory panel in favor of the Pfizer vaccine’s safety and efficacy was 7 to 4.

Build in the Suburbs, Solve the Housing Crisis

Unlike the Levittowns of 1957, these early suburbs were not as homogeneous, because the wealthy people who lived there were so reliant on domestic labor. The more vaporous claim that density threatens a certain “way of life” requires us to ask: What way? In 1960, during the high period of the ranch house, 44 percent of American households were made up of married couples with children. During the same period, the proportion of households containing only a single individual more than doubled, to 28 percent. In 2010, the population of Nassau County was 66 percent white; now it is 57 percent white.
The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an RSV vaccine produced by GlaxoSmithKline for use on adults ages 60 and older. London-based GSK during an earnings presentation last week said it has "millions" of doses of the RSV vaccine ready to ship. In March, an independent panel of advisors to the FDA recommended GSK's RSV vaccine based on data from a phase three trial on older adults. A 78-year-old woman in Japan was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome nine days after receiving GSK's vaccine, according to an FDA briefing document. The FDA flagged the disorder as a potential safety issue with Pfizer's RSV vaccine for older adults.

Last week, the European Medicines Agency did recommend approval of GSK’s vaccine for adults 60 and older.
The network has survived merger after merger with one of the mergers, AOL Time Warner, considered the worst deal in modern American corporate history. The birth of HBO coincided with the modernization of television across the United States with the emergence of cable in the 1960s and 70s. HBO debuted on November 8, 1972, and it was one of the first paid television networks with 344 total subscribers in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. We're going to have to do original series," Bewkes told CNBC. The Time Warner era ushered in a multiplex model for HBO to reduce churn and debuted original programming "Dream On" and "The Larry Sanders Show."
A health worker prepares a flu vaccine shot before administering it to a local resident in Los Angeles, the United States, on Dec. 17, 2022. People who receive Pfizer 's RSV vaccine for older adults should be monitored for Guillain-Barre syndrome, after two people developed the nervous system disorder after they received the shot, scientists said in clinical trial results published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists concluded the vaccine was effective in preventing lower respiratory tract illness in adults ages 60 and older without any evident safety concerns. But they flagged the Guillain-Barre cases as a potential cause for concern moving forward. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves.

Sen. John Fetterman has been hospitalized for clinical depression since February 15. Casey is coordinating with Fetterman staff on constituent services issues and legislative priorities, according to recent reports, but doesn't call Fetterman directly so as not to disturb his ongoing recovery. Some of the others working hard to meet that internal standard include legislative assistant Madeleine Marr, a former aide to Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller has been more blunt, accusing Fetterman's staff of unduly wielding power in his absence. "John Fetterman's chief of staff is not an elected senator," Miller wrote in an op-ed run by the Delaware Valley Journal.
