SummarySummary Companies Q1 cash profit up 19%, beats estimatesLoan growth, high interest rates boost profitNet interest margin rises 12 bpsFeb 16 (Reuters) - National Australia Bank (NAB.AX) said on Thursday its first-quarter cash profit jumped 19%, helped by a rise in lending deposits for the country's second-largest bank. "The higher interest rate environment, resulting from central bank actions to curb inflation, has benefited our revenue this period," Chief Executive Officer Ross McEwan said. However, speaking of higher interest rates, McEwan said it was "also causing economic growth and house prices to soften, and loan repayments to increase". The country's second-largest lender posted cash earnings of A$2.15 billion ($1.48 billion) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with A$1.80 billion a year ago. Analysts had expected cash earnings of $2.01 billion, according to Visible Alpha consensus.

Review: Is the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express card the best credit card for you? With the launch of the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card (and its new sibling card, the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Card ), there are now a whopping six Marriott credit cards available to new applicants. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card, with a $250 annual fee, is positioned as a mid-tier card between the popular Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card ($95 annual fee) and premium Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card ($650 annual fee). On other Marriott Bonvoy cards, like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, the free anniversary night certificate is one of the best perks, so its absence on the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card really sticks out. If have or have had The Ritz-Carlton® Credit Card from JPMorgan, J.P. FRANKFURT, Dec 12 (Reuters) - The European Central Bank will increase scrutiny over how banks manage credit risk and diversify funding, it said on Monday while outlining its 2023 priorities as the euro zone heads into a likely recession and faces soaring borrowing costs. A recent supervisory review also confirmed shortcomings in banks' risk controls, particularly in monitoring loans, classifying distressed borrowers and provisioning, the ECB said. "This renders banks vulnerable to a sharp correction in some property markets, especially the residential real estate segment, given the price dynamics observed in recent years," the ECB said. The ECB will conduct more targeted reviews at lenders in order to encourage "fair and timely" recognition of expected credit losses via higher provisions. This return may be more complicated as costs rise and investors' risk appetite declines, likely cutting into the profitability of the banks and challenging their ability to maintain liquidity and funding ratios, the ECB said.
When using a credit card, it's important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay. You can pay rent with it, you can get your oil changed with it, or you can pay your credit card bill with it. You'll be hard-pressed to find a cash-back credit card that offers such a high return on select spending. Alternative: The Citi® Double Cash Card is another wildly popular credit card for all your non-bonused spending. The card earns 1% back when you make a purchase and 1% back when you pay your credit card — giving you effectively 2% back for all your spending.

China COVID infections hit record as economic outlook darkens

BEIJING, Nov 24 (Reuters) - China reported a record high number of COVID-19 infections on Thursday, with cities nationwide imposing localised lockdowns and other curbs that are darkening the outlook for the world's second largest economy. The brokerage cut its GDP forecast for the fourth quarter to 2.4% year-over-year from 2.8%, and also cut its forecast for full-year growth to 2.8% from 2.9%. China recorded 31,444 new local COVID cases for Wednesday, breaking the record set on April 13, when Shanghai was in a city-wide lockdown that would last two months. China stocks fell on Thursday as concerns over the record-high caseload overshadowed optimism from fresh economic stimulus. The bank has also lowered its GDP growth forecast for next year to 4.0% from 4.3%.

Piyush Gupta might be banking’s boldest boss
  + stars: | 2022-11-15 | by ( Una Galani | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Piyush Gupta of $65 billion Singaporean lender DBS Group (DBSM.SI) appears to be that CEO, whether he thinks of himself that way or not. Yet the two banks trade on a similar multiple of 1.5 times their estimated 2022 book value, according to Refinitiv. There is limited room for growth in DBS’ tiny home market, a city with a population of 5.5 million people. That, plus the pressure to maintain that 1.5-times-book market value, means Gupta needs to keep finding ways to grow. U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on Nov. 14 while at the G20 summit in Indonesia.

HONG KONG, Nov 3 (Reuters) - A weak Hong Kong dollar and capital outflows have pushed the city's interbank rates to 14-year highs and drained cash levels to their lowest in two years, sparking investor worries about Hong Kong's cherished currency peg and its economic health. Below are some details on the complex policy framework and recent developments surrounding the tight liquidity:WHY IS HONG KONG ON INVESTORS' RADAR? That has tightened cash in the economy and driven the one-month Hong Kong Interbank Offer Rate (HIBOR) to a 14-year high.
