Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. For nearly a decade, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has been working to enforce oversight over Navient, a major student-loan company. Warren and some of her Democratic colleagues were concerned that the company was not properly managing student-loan borrowers' payment options, causing them to accumulate unaffordable student debt. However, it released an accountability framework in December that outlined enforcement actions it would take should servicers harm borrowers, including fining servicers and transferring borrowers to better-performing servicers. For example, MOHELA was the first servicer to be hit with a $7 million fine last October for failing to send on-time billing statements to over 2 million borrowers. Terminate MOHELA's contract and put loan services on notice: we will not tolerate your negligence and exploitation; we will not let you profiteer off vulnerable student borrowers."

Smart glasses, many with components made in China, are emerging as an up-and-coming category as the fall consumer technology product season gets underway. Snap has revealed augmented reality glasses ; Meta is expected to do so at its own event starting Sept. 25. The Facebook-parent's Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are already seeing traction, HSBC's Frank He, head of technology hardware research for mainland Chinese stocks, pointed out in a report earlier this month. The roughly $300 Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses allow users to take pictures, short video clips, listen to music and interact with Meta's AI features, according to promotional materials. For the year through July, the optical company's non-smartphone camera module shipments surged about 61%, which HSBC attributes to "brisk sales" of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

California had already banned thin plastic shopping bags at supermarkets and other stores, but shoppers could purchase bags made with a thicker plastic that purportedly made them reusable and recyclable. The new measure, approved by state legislators last month, bans all plastic shopping bags starting in 2026. “Californians voted to ban plastic grocery bags in our state almost a decade ago, but the law clearly needed a redo. With the Governor’s signature, California has finally banned plastic bags in grocery checkout lanes once and for all.”As San Francisco’s mayor in 2007, Newsom signed the nation’s first plastic bag ban.

In November, at least 10 more initiatives aimed at restoring or protecting abortion rights will be in front of voters across the country. But Brahm has also rallied an array of political, faith, academic, medical and advocacy leaders into a coalition called “Building a Post-Roe Future” that calls for more affordable health care and child care, expanded child tax credits, paid parental leave, flexible work hours and enforced pre-natal support. Though paid parental leave has been a big topic of discussion around the country, the only states to enact such measures since Dobbs are those where abortion rights are protected.
