Over many years, I’ve developed a method for making pie dough that’s as foolproof as possible, and I encourage you to try it. At the same time, pie dough can be an Achilles’ heel for many home cooks, so if you have a go-to recipe, feel free to use it. Since pies made scratch always require a lot of time, feel free to make just one or several. I highly recommend no actual pie-making on Thanksgiving Day, to keep your oven free for turkey and sides. I guarantee that by the time you cut into the pies, no one will care — or even remember — if your stuffing came from a box.

How the Humble Sheet Cake Became Top Tier

The Los Angeles-based baker Michelle Boulos can still picture the sheet cakes she ate as a child: slathered with bright white frosting, decorated with tiny plastic balloons. But the confections she makes and sells via her Instagram account No Good Cakes are something else entirely. On one recent creation, frills of buttercream surrounded an acid green ombré surface inspired by a chemical spill. Boulos, 34, started baking the fantastical cakes out of her home in 2022 after making one for a wedding. “I got bitten by the sheet cake bug,” she says.

Yet the economy continued to burn hot, with job openings outstripping the supply of workers and consumers spending freely. Some categories driving inflation sank back quickly, like furniture and food, while others — like energy — have resurged. In September, the central bank held its rate steady, but signaled that the rate would stay high for longer than the market had anticipated. For start-ups, which proliferated over the last few years, the concern is about the survival or failure of their businesses. Most entrepreneurs use their savings and help from friends and family to start businesses; only about 10 percent rely on bank loans.

Bumble had a "modest budget" at the time, Wolfe Herd said in a MasterClass course released on Thursday. Instead of traditional marketing campaigns, Wolfe Herd put together a series of "crazy hacks" to drum up interest in her Austin, Texas-based startup, she said. Wolfe Herd used a similar tactic with college fraternities, dropping off pizza with branded bumblebee stickers slapped onto the cardboard boxes. For Wolfe Herd, the momentum was validating. Seven years after launching the app, Wolfe Herd became the youngest female founder in history to take a company public.

CNN —When Jeison Aristizábal became the CNN Hero of the Year in 2016 – the first from Latin America – he shared a powerful message for young people with disabilities and their families. He has dedicated his life to bringing therapy, education, and support to other young people with disabilities in his community so they can realize their potential. “Today we have the first university for young people with disabilities in Latin America,” he said. “It has all the equipment so that people with disabilities can study in an accessible way,” Aristizábal said. The young people who inspired the idea for the university, Aristizábal says, started out learning to be bakers at the foundation.

New York CNN —Girl Scout cookies are getting more expensive. But now the higher price will apply to other cookies that the troops sell, including the more classic varieties. Girl Scout cookie prices have been rising from $5 to $6. “Each of our 111 Girl Scout councils sets local Girl Scout Cookie prices based on several factors,” a spokesperson for Girl Scouts of the USA told CNN. But Girl Scouts learned last year that there is a market for higher-priced cookies, thanks to the Raspberry Rally debacle.

In the last 15 years or so, a growing number of people have come to see the Hudson Valley as more than a beautiful place to visit. A host of new cafes, coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants cater to this rising population tide. Farms and farm stands provide great local ingredients, as do local cheese producers and bakers. It’s become a great place to eat and to drink good wine. On a recent trip to the Hudson Valley, I made my base near the small city of Hudson, N.Y., which has the greatest concentration of destinations in the area, though I explored places within a 30-minute drive.

An Amazon shareholder lawsuit says the company snubbed SpaceX for valuable satellite launch contracts because of Jeff Bezos' personal rivalry with Elon Musk , who has taunted his fellow billionaire's space ambitions for years. Last year, Amazon announced what it called the biggest rocket deal in the commercial space industry's history, signing launch contracts with United Launch Alliance (ULA), Arianespace, and Bezos' Blue Origin. Blue Origin has yet to provide a statement in response to CNBC's request for comment on the lawsuit. In January 2022, the suit says Bezos' team told the Amazon audit committee that two contracts had been fully negotiated with Blue Origin and ULA. "Bezos, it must be assumed, could not swallow his pride to seek his bitter rival's help to launch Amazon's satellites," the suit adds.

REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 31 (Reuters) - An Amazon (AMZN.O) shareholder has filed a lawsuit against founder Jeff Bezos and the Amazon board alleging directors failed to fully vet a decision to award launch contracts for the company's Project Kuiper satellite project to Blue Origin, Bezos's space company. Amazon's Project Kuiper is a planned network of over 3,000 satellites designed to beam broadband internet to remote regions. Cleveland Bakers and Teamsters Pension Fund, a multi-employer fund, said in its filing that the launch contracts were the second-largest capital expenditure in Amazon's history at the time. Project Kuiper will begin mass-producing the satellites later this year and beta testing with commercial customers in 2024, Amazon said earlier this year. The pension fund seeks unspecified damages and legal fees, according to a lawsuit filed on August 28 in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

We visited four Subway in Southern California to figure out how Roark can fix the brand. So I visited four Subway stores near my Southern California home. It is one of hundreds of Subway stores that have been remodeled over the years. In 2021, The New York Times conducted its lab test and published a report stating that it found no tuna DNA in Subway tuna sandwiches. I ordered the tuna sandwich at a Subway in Santa Ana, California, an aging stand-alone store in a former adobe-style Taco Bell building.

Two Gen Xers who moved to Austria from the US said they had more freedom and fewer anxieties. But after some thought, the 53-year-old decided to move up his retirement plans and relocate to his wife's home country of Austria. Many Americans are moving to Austria recently for employment opportunities and to improve their quality of life. Austria also ranks in the top 10 globally for safety, healthcare, and infrastructure, which Barnett said was "super rare." "I don't have any interest in leaving Austria," Valentine said.

A teacher in northern Nigeria walks three hours to school every day, no longer able to pay for a ride in a tuk tuk rickshaw. Bakers operate at a loss amid soaring flour prices. Workers in Lagos sleep overnight in their offices to avoid the prohibitive cost of commuting. Now the question is whether Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, with 220 million people, will thrive or just get sicker from the bitter medicine dispensed by its new president. Gas stations tripled their prices overnight.

Michael Dumler, an American photographer, went to Ukraine to document the war. But when he arrived, he put down his camera and dedicated himself to addressing a more pressing need: training ordinary Ukrainians how to fight. The scramble to stand up an army of citizen-soldiers against the Russian military has been a defining feature of the conflict in Ukraine. Western nations allied with Ukraine have been hesitant to endorse and fund foreign trainers inside the country because of concerns that it would lead to escalation. But in the Opinion Video above, Dumler argues that the most practical approach to training newly enlisted Ukrainians is inside Ukraine’s borders.

Rize: Turkey’s hidden mountain hideaways

CNN —Rize province, on the Black Sea coast near Turkey’s northeast border with Georgia, is still largely unknown to many international travelers. Away from Rize itself – the seaside city which lends its name to the province – the area’s valleys and plateaus, surrounded by high-altitude mountain ridges, have remained largely rural. With high rates of rainfall, Rize’s mountain villages (yayla) become a point of escape from summer temperatures. “The state of tourism in Rize is not very pleasant because visitors often arrive without much knowledge about the local culture or the nature. “I think the purpose of coming to Rize shouldn’t be to rush through everything and take a few selfies.

Paris CNN —The humble baguette is the epitome of French baking. The perfect loaf, delicately crusty outside, soft and airy inside, is worth the airfare to Paris all on its own. For the contest, bakers are judged specifically on their “baguette de tradition,” a designation that differentiates good-quality loaves from industrially made rivals. Polski is a veteran of the Paris contest, having presided over it for almost a decade. There is not one neighborhood today without fresh bread, Polski says.
WE LIVE in a depressing era of Instagram-driven food trends, when so many sandwiches have become grotesque aberrations—oozing, dripping, hulking, overstuffed monsters, designed to be photographed as much as or more than they were designed to be eaten. I propose a modest revolution in the face of this excess: a return to the notion that sandwiches are about the bread. We also live in a time when bakeries are producing high-quality bread in more places in the U.S., and possibly worldwide, than ever before. This isn’t just true of large cities on the coasts. Bakers across the country are laboring to provide better bread for their communities.
Cheesecake Fit for a Maestro

What kind of cheesecake withstands burning and triumphs, and sears itself into the memories of child and worldly wise alike? The ingredient list is brief: for the filling, only cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract. Oklahoma State University even features a recipe on its website, one of seemingly countless online. Kitsopoulos took a recipe from Pillsbury, developed by Deborah Harroun, the writer of the Taste and Tell blog. Where Pillsbury advises first rolling out the dough for the topping on parchment paper, she just plops it on.
The owner of a bakery that features in "Emily in Paris" spoke out about online criticism he's faced. Thierry Rabineau said he felt "humiliated" by negative reviews and only wanted to do his job. He said some came in thinking "our products are going to be incredible," he told Insider. One customer wrote: "The famous croissant from 'Emily In Paris TV show' is the worst croissant I tasted in Paris and it is expensive." But while the negative reviews have weighed heavily on Rabineau, others have come to his defense.
Since the Middle Ages, the perception of a blanched loaf as more exclusive than a darker one, though the latter is typically more nourishing, has been hard to shake. The invention of the iron roller mill in 19th-century Hungary made the process of beating all color, and nutrition, out of wheat easier and white bread cheaper. Still, the devaluing of whole grains continued, explained the Berlin-based American baker Laurel Kratochvila, 39, recently. “The 20th century was a very bad time for bread,” she said. “Be very wary of the perfect white loaf,” Kratochvila said, arching one eyebrow.
New York CNN —For decades, Girl Scouts has used cookie sales to raise funds and teach scouts about entrepreneurship. “Right now we are focused on ensuring all Girl Scouts have a successful Cookie Season,” Girl Scouts USA told CNN in a statement, adding that it is also focused on optimizing its operations “in real-time, and [capturing] learnings that will inform our strategy going into future seasons.”But for the scouts, those learnings have been hard-won. That meant shoppers could order it themselves, though Girl Scouts encouraged them to ask scouts to place the orders. Plus, Girl Scouts built a lot of hype with the limited-time offer, creating a sense of urgency, Esper noted. Francine Orr/Los Angeles Times/Getty ImagesYet as customers clamored for the cookie, scouts and their parents learned there was no chance of increasing supply by the end of the cookie season in April.
This is the way the Girl Scout cookie crumbles. The inventory woes have caused a shortage of some cookie flavors that have sent Girl Scout cookie resale prices skyrocketing. Boxes of Girl Scout cookies typically go for $5 a pop. "We are extremely disappointed that LBB is again having challenges with managing their production," a Girl Scouts spokesperson told CNBC. The other 25% of Girl Scout councils are supplied by ABC Bakers, a smaller baking company that the Girl Scouts say has not had the same production issues as LBB.
Cash-strapped nations such as Zambia and Ghana are also facing talks on reworking debt with Chinese lenders, and Sri Lanka's negotiations showed that international efforts to standardize some debt rework parameters are failing. China is the biggest bilateral creditor to Sri Lanka, which defaulted on its international debt last year. Sri Lanka owed China's EXIM $4.1 billion, or 11% of the country's foreign currency debt, at the end of 2022, according to government data.
