CNN —Archeologists in Turkey say they have discovered the world’s oldest known bread, dating back to 6600 BC. Around the oven, archeologists found wheat, barley, pea seeds and a palm-sized, round, “spongy” residue, it said in a press release Wednesday. Flour and water had been mixed in, with the bread having been prepared next to the oven and kept for a while. “It is an exciting discovery for Turkey and the world,” Kavak said. The organic matter – both wood and bread – was preserved by thin clay that covered the structure, according to Türkcan.

But one fabled device has left scientists speculating on its existence for hundreds of years — the death ray. For his 2022 science project, Sener recreated the Archimedes screw, a device for raising and moving water. Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Archimedes’ death ray is more commonly speculated to have been an array of several mirrors or polished shields. Sener’s mom, Melanie, was not surprised by her son’s choice in science project.

To account for that gap, Julius Caesar in 45 BC decreed that an extra day be added every four years, leading to the Julian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 AD created the Gregorian calendar, coined the term “leap year” and established February 29 as the official leap day. He adds that a leap day can also help marginally raise corporate earnings, since companies get an extra day in a fiscal quarter to operate. CNN —Menthol cigarette bans are effective at getting people to quit smoking, new research finds. The pooled results show that about a quarter of menthol smokers quit within a year or two when the substance is banned from cigarettes. Menthol cigarette smoking rates were lower in settings with national bans and highest when there were only local or statewide bans. Even if just a quarter of menthol smokers quit, it could improve the health of thousands of people. Menthol itself isn’t addictive, but menthol cigarettes are more attractive to new smokers, studies show, because the flavoring masks the harsh taste and smell that may put some new smokers off.
