Historically, November is the best month of the year for the stock market, and December is third, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Under the surface this week, we also saw signs of a possible market rotation in the works. Rotation watch : We must look to next week's trading for confirmation that we're in the grips of a rotation or simply a head fake. Signs of the former were on display this week as the two of the biggest sector winners of the year, communication services and technology , trailed the market. Jobs, jobs, jobs : The most important release of the week comes Friday in the form of the November nonfarm payrolls report.

Wall Street will endeavor to keep the November momentum going in the final month of 2023, as investors look for a broadening out of the rally that has been dominated this year by a handful of tech names. It also marked the best monthly performance for the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite since July 2022. While the S & P 500 cap-weighted index climbed more than 18% this year, the equal-weighted index is up by just over 4%. They highlight the attractive relative valuation of value stocks compared to growth stocks, as well as the significant underweighting of value names in portfolios by traders. And the question is, is it going to be in 2024, is it going to be 2025 or in 2026?

Q3 S & P 500 earnings: Trending higher July 1: $55.76 Today: $55.78 Source: LSEG Q4 S & P 500 earnings: Trending higher July 1: $57.58 Today: $58.14 Source: LSEG The fact that the third quarter estimate of $55.78 is slightly below the third quarter of last year ($56.02) is not important; what matters is the trend in earnings. For Q3 2023, 76 S & P 500 companies have issued negative EPS guidance and 42 S & P 500 companies have issued positive EPS guidance, according to John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet. "The earnings outlook for the S & P 500 for the third quarter is less negative relative to recent quarters," Butters told clients. "The percentage of companies issuing negative earnings guidance is equal to the 10-year average." Here's what stands out: The average earnings growth was 10.6%; the average revenue growth was 4.2%.

Buy this 'recession-resistant' auto retail stock, Citi says

Citi thinks O'Reilly Automotive will buck the broader weakness in the retail market. The bank upgraded the auto parts retailer to buy from neutral and raised its price target to $1,040 per share from $983. "We think the recent pullback in the shares presents an attractive buying opportunity for the stable, defensive retail stock," analyst Steven Zaccone wrote in a Thursday note. "Our target multiple is also at a slight premium to the market share leaders retail basket given the recession-resistant aspect of ORLY's business and consistent margin execution." "ORLY is the most consistent of the auto parts retailers historically.

Lots of Wall Street firms are getting out ahead of this week's earnings from Constellation Brands (STZ) with price target increases. At the time, we were optimistic and increased our price target on the Modelo and Corona maker to $270 per share from $260. When measuring beer growth, he assesses how much shelf space companies get every year and how quickly those products fly off the shelves. All these factors "drive solid beer growth even as the macro environment gets worse," Falorni said. Wedbush also thinks Constellation will be able to weather those macro consumer storms and continue to drive earnings and revenue growth.

After September lived up to its reputation as the worst month of the year, bulls are hopeful earnings will prove a welcome distraction for a stock market mired in weak seasonal trends and rising interest rates. "Net net, the earnings estimates for these early reporters are going up, and that is a positive sign for earnings season," Earnings Scout founder and CEO Nick Raich from told me. Valuations are coming down but are still high The forward multiple for the S & P 500 (Q4 2023, and Q1-Q3 for 2024) is 17.9. For example, industrials have seen a significant decline in earnings estimates due to very large estimate declines for Boeing. Bulls hopeful earnings will prove a welcome distraction The expectations for rising earnings has many hopeful that it will help get stocks out of their recent rut due to rising interest rates.

After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. Second, I don't know anyone else who believes the economy is so strong that the Fed is correct to keep on an anti-inflation course. I don't think so.

The Federal Reserve is widely anticipated to hold rates steady in the week ahead, but key for investors will be the central bank's guidance on where it's headed from here. Investors are assessing a mixed batch of economic reports ahead of the Fed's September policy meeting. Grocery-delivery company Instacart may also release initial public offering pricing Monday night, Cramer said, and Tuesday will bring an earnings report from AutoZone. "When there's a Fed meeting coming up in less than a week and nobody seems worried about it, maybe you want to brace yourself for a little turbulence," he said. On Thursday, Cramer will be looking at Olive Garden owner Darden 's earnings report, which may provide some clarity on whether consumers are spending money dining out. Activist Commentary: Elliott is a very successful and astute activist investor, particularly in the technology sector. Constellation Brands produces and markets beer, wine and spirits, but it's essentially a beer company with 85% of its revenue coming from beer sales. Moreover, it is not just a niche beer business anymore. First, the company has traded at a discount because of the dual-class share structure that allowed the Sands family to control Constellation. This leaves a core beer business that can now be operated without unnecessary distractions.

Student loan payments are set to resume in October following a Supreme Court ruling last month. Analysts at Morgan Stanley project this will have a broad — but uneven — impact on major retailers. Retailers are already bracing for the shift, which analysts at Morgan Stanley project will affect nearly every company — some more than others. "Retailers with high exposure to student loan holders that sell into a discretionary category are likely most at risk, while retailers with low exposure to student loan holders are likely most insulated," the analysts note. In addition to Target, the analysis calls out Dick's Sporting Goods, Wayfair, and Williams-Sonoma as particularly vulnerable to this pullback in discretionary spending.
