DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke made a rapid climb under Mike Elko. Now they're searching for a new football coach after an unusually short tenure. Texas A&M officially named Elko its next football coach on Monday, ending Elko's two-year stint that saw the Blue Devils win 16 games and twice reach bowl games. That marked only the second time in nearly a century that a Duke coach was on the job for three or fewer seasons. Elko won nine games and a bowl in his debut season, then guided Duke to a seven-win regular season with a weekend win against Pittsburgh.

The back door to the College Football playoff is unlikely to be open for Ohio State or anybody else this championship weekend. And the Crimson Tide stayed in CFP contention as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 20 Iowa in the Big Ten championship game away from a third straight playoff appearance. In the final season before playoff expansion to 12 teams, cutting the field to four might be tricky. ... Lt. Gen. Richard Clark was hired last week to become the CFP's second executive director, replacing the retiring Bill Hancock. Mistrust and misaligned priorities among the conference commissioners who manage the CFP — triggered by realignment — along with leadership turnover in some leagues, snarled the expansion process. Oregon State and Washington State claim the actions of the Pac-12 and Commissioner George Kliavkoff in response to members announcing their intent to leave the conference in 2024 show those departing schools relinquished their rights to decide the long-term future of the league. “The Pac-12 cannot continue to be paralyzed at such a critical time," Washington State and Oregon State said in a joint statement. Earlier this month, the University of Washington asked to intervene in the case and for the court to dismiss the lawsuit brought by Oregon State and Washington State. A mediation process is also ongoing between Oregon State and Washington State and the 10 departing Pac-12 members. Lastly, according to the filing, Kliavkoff sent a text message to representatives of Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford and Cal following announcements by Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah on Aug. 4 that they were leaving for new conferences stating: “(a)s of today we have 4 board members."

It took a disastrous loss instead, as Georgia Tech turned a huge mistake by the Hurricanes into a last-second miracle. Instead, Don Chaney fumbled the ball away — Miami argued he was down, referees disagreed — and the Yellow Jackets pulled off a stunner. When the college football season kicks off in earnest this Labor Day weekend, it will be a test to keep an eye on the ball. The focus for a few days may be on blocking, tackling and quick-trigger assessments of who’s up and who’s down, but then what in a sport that is on the cusp of unprecedented upheaval? Consider what college football will look like in a year. Texas and Oklahoma, anchors of the Big 12 Conference, will be in the Southeastern Conference. And after this season, the College Football Playoff will balloon from four teams to 12.

Florida State University has been working with JPMorgan as it explores options to bring in funding from institutional investors, according to a person familiar with the matter. The discussions have been ongoing in recent months, and Sixth Street Partners has expressed interest as an investor, the person said. The discussions with potential equity investors are not tied to FSU's potential push to leave the conference, according to the person familiar with the matter. Sportico earlier reported that FSU was working with JPMorgan and that Sixth Street was part of the discussions. "That effort fell apart, mainly because it was a challenge to mesh private investors with the potential media rights for public schools," said sports media consultant Lee Berke.

Shortly after Syracuse’s season ended with a buzzer-beater loss to Wake Forest in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Wednesday, the Orange’s 78-year-old Hall of Fame coach, Jim Boeheim, addressed the topic of his future. “As I’ve said from day one when I started working here, the university hired me, and it’s their choice what they want to do. I always have the choice of retirement, but it’s their decision as to whether I coach or not. It always has been,” Boeheim said.
