Verstappen pips Piastri to pole for Spa sprint race
  + stars: | 2023-07-29 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
McLaren's Piastri had been on top of the timesheets until the final seconds when double world champion Verstappen went 0.11 quicker with a lap of one minute 49.056 seconds on a drying track. The standalone sprint format is being used at Spa for the first time, the third of six such events this season. Piastri said he "couldn’t have got much more out of that" and was happy to be on the front row. The provisional pole changed hands swiftly in the final shootout, with Hamilton fastest then Red Bull's Sergio Perez, Gasly, Sainz and Piastri before Verstappen's predictable final flourish. "It's good to get a clean end to qualifying," said Verstappen, with more rain forecast later.

The movie cars are also set to feature on the grid, without driving a formation lap, and be on track in between the sessions. The Apple TV film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Top Gun: Maverick", with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Hamilton said the movie would also do justice to a sport where cars can hit top speeds of 370kph. I think it’s going to look faster than it does on TV," he said. Verstappen leads Red Bull one-two on Sprint grid

The double world champion lapped his team's home Red Bull Ring with a fastest time of one minute 04.440 seconds on a drying track to complete a qualifying double after securing pole on Friday for Sunday's main grand prix. Red Bull have won all of them, Verstappen six. "It's nice to have a lockout in the Red Bull Ring for the team," said the Mexican, who was 0.493 slower than his team mate. "The sprint race doesn't really matter anyway," said Hamilton, who had his fastest effort deleted for exceeding track limits and was then overtaken by Verstappen while trying to set a valid lap. The race will be the second standalone sprint of the season after Baku, won by Perez in April.

Verstappen already has four wins at the scenic circuit, having also won the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. I think this year’s event will be maybe the biggest event they’ve ever put on." Perez's seat with Red Bull safe for now says Button
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Steve Keating | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
June 20 (Reuters) - Sergio Perez's seat with Red Bull is safe for this Formula One season, former champion Jenson Button said on Tuesday, but if the Mexican's struggles continue he could be looking for another team next year. Horner also said the team was going to stand by Perez and help him through the slump but Red Bull have not always shown patience with under-performing drivers. DRIVERS SHAKE-UPScenarios are starting to emerge about what a possible drivers shake-up at Red Bull might look like. One rumour has Ricciardo, who previously drove for Red Bull from 2014-18, going from a reserve role to a seat with sister outfit AlphaTauri, replacing under-performing Nick de Vries. Such a move would allow Australian Ricciardo to remove some competitive rust and make a seamless transition back into the Red Bull seat if Perez was dumped.

Red Bull can win everything but the gap may be closing
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
June 19 (Reuters) - Red Bull boss Christian Horner recognised after Sunday's landmark Canadian Grand Prix that his runaway Formula One leaders could win every race this season. "On this venue yes, the gap is shorter... it's inevitable that they are closing, we'd be surprised if that wouldn't be the case," said Horner. If there is an Achilles' Heel in Red Bull's dominance, it is the current dependence on Verstappen for the top step of the podium. Should Verstappen suffer a setback, mechanical or otherwise, the chances of the second Red Bull coming through for the win are looking a lot less certain and rivals are sensing opportunities. Verstappen's last race retirement was in Australia in April 2022 and the last time he was beaten by someone not in a Red Bull was last November, when Mercedes's George Russell won in Brazil.

Red Bull eyes 200 after winning 100th grand prix

Red Bull becomes just the fifth team to amass 100 grand prix wins joining Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Williams. "I think for us we've broken into a fairly elite club of over 100 (wins)," said Horner. If Red Bull is to reach 200 wins, Verstappen is likely to be a big part of that success, as he was in the first 100. It's fitting that Red Bull will begin their quest for another 100 wins at the Austrian Grand Prix their home race and home of founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who passed away last year. Rossi proud to see Alpine back on the podium

I am happy for the team," the Frenchman told Reuters as he walked to the pitlane for a celebratory group photograph. On Sunday, in Alpine's 50th race under that branding, Gasly was seventh and the team overtook McLaren for fifth in the constructors' standings. "I’m proud of them and they should be proud too," said Rossi. Ocon, a winner in Hungary in 2021 with Alpine, said his third career podium capped a "superb weekend" for the team and hoped it was the start of something bigger. "From the simulator to really all the practice sessions, we improved the car from beginning to end and we didn't make a wrong foot any time," said the first Frenchman on the Monaco podium since Olivier Panis in 1996.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had been hoping for his third home pole in a row, had to settle for third while Verstappen's team mate and closest title rival Sergio Perez crashed and will start last. "I think that is one of the best laps he’s ever driven in qualifying," said Horner of his champion's 23rd career pole. Last year's winner Perez, 14 points behind Verstappen after five races, crashed at the Sainte Devote first corner in the opening session. The Mexican crashed in the final phase of qualifying last year but started third, and ahead of Verstappen. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was only 14th on the grid and behind the Williams of Alex Albon in 13th.
Aston Martin stock soars after $295 million Geely investment
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
May 18 (Reuters) - Aston Martin's (AML.L) stock popped nearly 22% on Thursday, after the luxury carmaker announced a 234 million pound investment by China's Geely (0715.HK), that will see the automotive firm become its third-largest shareholder. Geely will acquire about 42 million ordinary shares from Chairman Lawrence Stroll's Yew Tree, which is currently the Aston Martin's largest stakeholder, at 335 pence apiece and subscribe for another 28 million shares at the same price. Aston Martin shares, which closed at 231.2 pence on Wednesday, were trading up to 279.4 pence at 0727 GMT. "Our decision to increase our shareholding in Aston Martin reflects our confidence in the company's growth prospects, its technologies and its management team," said Geely Chairman Eric Li. The investment gives Geely a 17% stake in the company and entitles it to one board seat, behind number two shareholder Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll suggested the firm made up to $80 million selling F1 safety cars. The CEO took control of Aston Martin in 2020, but it's failed to recover massive share price losses. Aston Martin's boss suggested the carmaker might have gotten an $80 million boost from its car featuring in Formula One races. That would suggest Aston Martin has taken between $60 million and $80 million worth of sales linked to its safety car. Stroll's son Lance is a driver on his Aston Martin team, alongside two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
That over-the-top scene seemed to go down quite well with fans but left drivers unimpressed, with some looking unsure of what to do beyond wave and smile. F1 says it plans similar splashy intros at eight races this season. "I just hope we don't have that every single time, because we have a very long season, so we don't need an entry like that every time," said Verstappen. The idea behind the catwalk is to provide more interaction between drivers and fans. But drivers say that engagement comes at a cost by taking away time they need to prepare to race.

While Miami can deliver plenty of Monaco like pizzazz, the action on the track could also be similar to Monte Carlo with precious little overtaking.
