BOSTON — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to kill a group of Asian Americans and repeatedly hitting one of them with his car. “This defendant targeted this man solely because he was Asian American. He yelled “go back to China” and threatened to kill them before repeatedly hitting one of them, a Vietnamese man, with his car. There had been a dramatic spike in verbal, physical and online attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which was thought to have originated in China. “There are bad people who do bad things and good people that do a bad thing,” the attorney wrote in the sentencing memorandum.

China halts foreign adoptions of its children

BEIJING — The Chinese government is no longer allowing foreign adoptions of the country’s children, a spokesperson said Thursday. The only exception will be for blood relatives adopting a child or a stepchild, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said. Many foreigners have adopted children from China over the decades, visiting the country to pick them up and then bringing them to a new home overseas. China suspended international adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government later resumed adoptions for children who had received travel authorization before the suspension in 2020, the U.S. State Department said in its latest annual report on adoptions.

One image, however, has captured what the moment could mean for young girls. Amara Ajagu watches as Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, speaks on the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, on Thursday, August 22, 2024. More so than most little girls, Ajagu can say that Harris could be the first president who looks like her. Harris’ potential to be the first has been an undercurrent of her presidential runs since her first campaign in 2020. Prior to the vice president’s speech, Amara and her younger sister, Leela, led the crowd in a lesson on how to pronounce their great-aunt’s first name: “Comma,” like the punctuation mark, then “La,” like the sing-song “la, la, la.”

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.

The contenders for San Francisco mayor are perfecting the pronunciation of their names in Cantonese. They are scrambling to recruit the best Chinese-speaking volunteers, in what one campaign manager described as a bona fide “arms race.”And they are grabbing any opportunity to meet with Chinese American voters in the city. “Now they almost never turn down an invitation to come, and they stay for the whole event,” Mr. Lee said with a chuckle. “They know that the Chinese vote is quite powerful now.”Nationally, Asian American voters often have to fight for attention because their numbers are still considered too few in most states for campaigns to invest heavily in outreach. But in San Francisco, where people of Chinese descent comprise more than one-fifth of the population, mayoral candidates believe that Chinese voters could decide the outcome in November.

Can Free Rent Revive Downtown San Francisco?

There’s a buzz of energy in downtown San Francisco from a source that has been missing for years: occupied storefronts. One of those shops is Paper Son Coffee, a roaster with flavors popular among Latin and Asian American communities that has been operating in the South of Market neighborhood since June. “People who work or live in the neighborhood stop in and are like, ‘Wow, there is something here!’” said Alexander Pong, an owner of Paper Son. “They’re excited.”Paper Son is part of an initiative to help San Francisco return to the days before it became a devastating example of what could go wrong with U.S. cities during the pandemic. Downtown San Francisco has the highest concentration of vacant storefronts in the city.

So when white people unfamiliar with African American English hear that rise and fall, they think the speaker is being kind of argumentative. How "Black" Harris sounds, in other words, is in the ear of the beholder. After Donald Trump told journalists on Wednesday that his presidential opponent Kamala Harris “turned Black” for political gain, Trump’s comments have impacted the way many multirace voters are thinking about the two candidates. Some identify with Harris’ politics more than others but, overall, they told NBC News that Trump’s comments will not go unnoticed. She said she doesn’t support Harris’ past criminal justice policies as a district attorney and she doesn’t think President Joe Biden is doing enough to support Gaza. She uses everybody, including her racial identity!”Trump has relied on his familiar tactic of attacking Harris’ race and gender since Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris. Viewers have had mixed reactions to athletes who have gotten engaged during the Paris Games. While some feel that the grand gesture makes Olympians’ big moments even bigger, others say that the proposals steal the spotlight from female athletes in particular. A Chinese social media site even jokingly shared a post featuring an added engagement ring column alongside the medal counter. But proposals done just after a monumental win have drawn some of the most scrutiny from some fans. And many social media users came to the couple’s defense, arguing that the proposal took place after the medal ceremony.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has won enough votes from Democratic delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday. Delegates began casting virtual ballots for the nomination Thursday, a process that will continue until Monday evening. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” said Harris, who joined the virtual event. It’s been clear since shortly after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris that the vice president would be the only serious candidate for the nomination. Though voting for the Democratic nomination began and will possibly conclude before Harris announces her running mate, party rules don’t require a separate vote to confirm the nominee for vice president.
