Israel has said that Hamas has a command centre underneath Al Shifa and uses the hospital and tunnels beneath it to conceal military operations and to hold hostages. Hamas said on Wednesday that U.S. announcement had effectively given a "green light" for Israel to raid the hospital. Israeli forces have waged fierce street battles against Hamas fighters over the past 10 days before advancing into the centre of Gaza City and surrounding Al Shifa. "We hold the occupation forces fully responsible for the lives of the medical staff, patients and displaced people in Al Shifa," Alkaila said in a statement.

The Gaza Strip has been under a total Israeli blockade since Hamas launched an attack on Israel on Oct. 7. An Israeli ground incursion since then has brought fighting to streets around the hospital in the centre of Gaza City in the north of the strip. "Luckily they are still 36, we didn’t lose any of them overnight," Dr Ahmed El Mokhatallali, a surgeon, told Reuters by telephone from Al Shifa. 'NO CLEAR MECHANISM'The military did not say what steps it would take to make an evacuation possible, amid intense air strikes and ongoing fighting in the vicinity of Al Shifa hospital. What we care most is about the wellbeing and the lives of those babies," Gaza health ministry spokesperson Ashraf Al-Qidra said, speaking by telephone from the hospital.

"We are planning to bury them today in a mass grave inside the Al Shifa medical complex. Qidra put the number of bodies that had accumulated at Al Shifa at about 100. "Unfortunately there is no approval from the Israelis to even bury the bodies within the hospital area," he said. GAZA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said hospitals in the Gaza Strip must be protected and he hoped for "less intrusive" action by Israel as Israeli tanks advanced to the gates of the besieged enclave's main hospital. At least 650 patients were still inside Al Shifa hospital, desperate to be evacuated to another medical facility. In his first comments since the weekend's events, including patient deaths reported at Al Shifa, Biden said hospitals must be protected. A premature Palestinian baby lies in an incubator at the maternity ward of Shifa Hospital in Gaza on October 22. Staff at the Al-Shifa hospital were fighting to keep the newborns alive after oxygen supplies ran out and they had to move the babies by hand from the neonatal unit’s incubators to a different part of the hospital. Images show several newborn babies who were taken off incubators at the hospital clustered helplessly together and placed in one bed. Ministry spokesman Dr. Ashraf al-Qidra said the complex was “out of service” after repeatedly being targeted by Israeli fire. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians, injured or displaced by Israel’s escalating war against Hamas, have packed its wards, seeking shelter from the seemingly endless barrage of Israeli airstrikes.

By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Dan WilliamsGAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The largest hospital in Gaza has ceased to function and fatalities among patients are rising, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday, as a blistering Israeli assault continues in the Hamas-controlled strip. "Tragically, the number of patient fatalities has increased significantly," he said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, adding that Shifa was "not functioning as a hospital anymore." The European Union condemned Hamas for using "hospitals and civilians as human shields" in Gaza, while also urging Israel to show "maximum restraint" to protect civilians. The Israeli military response has also prompted anger, with hundreds of thousands protesting in capitals around the world demanding a ceasefire. That’s why we’re slowly closing in on them,” the Israeli military spokesman, Richard Hecht, told reporters on Friday night. The situation could not be immediately confirmed, though the Israeli military has made clear that its troops are fighting in the heart of Gaza City. “If conditions were better than this, we could have saved their lives,” Dr. Abu Salmiya said. “At this point, there’s just so little we can do for the wounded we receive, only the bare minimum,” said Dr. Abu Salmiya. CNN —More than 10,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its military offensive nearly a month ago, the Hamas-controlled health ministry in the Palestinian enclave said Monday. Ashraf Al Qudra, spokesperson for the ministry, said 10,022 Palestinians in the enclave had been killed by Israeli strikes, including 4,104 children, 2,641 women and 611 elderly people. CNN cannot independently verify the numbers released by the ministry in Gaza, which is sealed off by Israel and mostly sealed by Egypt. The international charity Save the Children said last month that the number of children reported killed in the enclave during Israel’s campaign had surpassed the annual number of children killed in armed conflict globally in each of the past four years. Israel is, however, yet to show any signs of backing down, saying its operations in Gaza are only expanding.

Since then, Israeli air and artillery strikes on Gaza have killed 9,488 people, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says. Israel has cut off electricity and fuel supplies, while allowing in only a trickle of food and medicine. As Israeli ground troops entered Gaza a week ago, cutting the territory in two and surrounding Gaza City and nearby refugee camps, conditions in the north have worsened with more intense bombardment and acute shortages. On Saturday Israel's military said it would allow civilians to leave Gaza City by the main road southwards for three hours, but Reuters was unable to locate any people who had done so. An air strike on Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the enclave killed 40 people according to local health authorities.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Arab foreign ministers Saturday to find ways to ease Gaza’s growing humanitarian crisis. GAZA CITY FIGHTINGIsraeli troops have been tightening their encirclement of Gaza City, the main focus of the military's campaign to crush Hamas. The Israeli military said its aircraft hit an ambulance Friday that Hamas fighters were using to carry weapons. Al-Qidra said a convoy of ambulances left Shifa carrying wounded people to Rafah when a strike hit a vehicle on the edges of Gaza City. The overall toll is likely to rise dramatically as the assault on densely built-up Gaza City continues.
