Samsung has issued a recall for over 1 million slide-in electric ranges due to fire hazard after the company received reports that its front knobs could be unintentionally activated by people or pets, and resulted in 250 blazes. Since 2013, Samsung received over 300 reports of the "unintentional activation" of the range's front-mounted knobs by humans or pets. Samsung is offering free knob locks or knob covers as a remedy to the issue. Further, some Samsung ranges with Wi-Fi connectivity can send users a notification via the Samsung SmartThings app to warn when a burner is activated. The company is also participating in a CPSC “Joint Gas and Electric Range Knob Working Group” along with other major brands to improve knob safety standards.

The retailer is cracking down on sharing membership cards with a new policy in which all cards will be scanned at store entrances. Guests without cards must be accompanied by a member to enter, making it harder to slip in on borrowed cards. Members with cards without photos will be asked to show valid photo ID, and they are encouraged to have their photos taken to add to their cards at the membership counter. Costco relies on membership fees to drive most of its revenue and help keep merchandise prices low. Last year, Costco stepped up enforcement by adding an extra check for memberships in self-checkout aisles to stop shoppers from using other members’ cards.

Simone Biles said she closed her time at the Paris Olympics "bawling my eyes out" to her teammates, after a glorious run where the 27-year-old superstar secured four medals — three gold and one silver. She bowed out of the Olympics Monday after winning silver in the women’s floor exercise final following multiple penalties, and after falling on the balance beam. Speaking on how she felt ending her stint at the world's greatest competition stage, the 11-time Olympic medalist said it hasn't quite sunk in. For him, it meant the world to him because he’s seen the amount of hours that I’ve put in. Instead, she simply wants to be remembered as “someone who loved the sport, had fun doing it and was just authentically herself.”

It was 1997 when actor Gillian Anderson won an Emmy for her role in "The X-Files," and celebrated by leaning in for a kiss with the leading man of her life — but it wasn't her boyfriend. Anderson was just announced as the winner for her portrayal of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on the beloved sci-fi conspiracy drama. She then infamously turned to kiss her "X-Files" co-star David Duchovny, aka Special Agent Fox Mulder, on the mouth as he was seated behind. Only then did she lean to her side to kiss her boyfriend, Rodney Rowland, seated next to her. “The fact is that David and I were actually living together and Rodney was my beard,” she joked.

A recall of Boar's Head products has expanded to include a whopping 7 million additional pounds of deli and poultry items in a deadly multistate outbreak of listeria infections. As of Tuesday, 34 people have gotten sick across 13 states in the outbreak — including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. Last week, the deli meat company had recalled more than 207,000 pounds of deli meat, including liverwurst and ham products, because they may contain the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Boar's Head has now expanded that recall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in a press release Tuesday. Boar's Head said in a statement on its website that it had initiated the recall after a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health had tested positive for listeria.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feed fine — because Costco has an emergency dinner kit, dubbed online as "the apocalypse bucket," that lasts 25 years. Proxy advisory firm Glass Lewis on Thursday recommended that shareholders of Masimo , the medical technology firm best known for its Apple Watch patent litigation, elect dissident Politan's two nominees, Bill Jellison and Darlene Solomon. Masimo's board includes Kiani, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek and Politan managing member Quentin Koffey, who overwhelmingly won the election last year. Glass Lewis tacitly endorsed that criticism in its report, writing that the company displayed "de minimus responsibility" and "poor governance." Alongside its larger peer Institutional Shareholder Services, though, Glass Lewis reports are considered highly important to passive investors. A summer wave of Covid-19 has arrived in the US

CNN —Covid-19 levels have been rising in the United States for weeks as new variants drive what’s become an annual summer surge. That’s enough time to offer protection during the winter respiratory virus season but probably after this summer’s wave has ebbed. On Thursday, the CDC recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine for the 2024-25 season. Unlike flu and RSV, Covid-19 is constantly circulating; it doesn’t offer a reprieve. The changes are meant to “simplify RSV vaccine decision-making for clinicians and the public,” the agency said.

Led by Quentin Koffey, Politan has nominated two further directors to the company's board, and says that without their election, management will continue to operate without oversight. "This is shareholders' last chance at meaningful change," Politan wrote in a letter to Masimo shareholders on Wednesday, laying out its case to investors ahead of the meeting. But governance improvements have fallen short of what shareholders deserve, Koffey wrote in the letter, noting that Masimo's board "does not review, approve or see a budget." Masimo took aggressive steps to fend off Politan, introducing bylaws to force the firm to reveal its shareholder list. "For more than two years, Politan has navigated unprecedented impediments thrown up by Masimo's board," the activist said.

Reuters —An heiress who has denounced the absence of taxes on wealth and inheritance in Austria has given the bulk of her money, 25 million euros ($27 million), to 77 organizations, including social and climate groups, as well as prominent left-wing ones. A spokesman said the 25 million euros was “the overwhelming bulk” of her wealth, though she retains an undisclosed sum. Engelhorn is a descendant of Friedrich Engelhorn, who founded German chemicals giant BASF in 1865. When Engelhorn-Vechiatto died in 2022, Marlene inherited a large sum. “Now, it is up to the political actors to do justice to what this group representative of the Austrian population has embodied,” Engelhorn said, calling for more debate on these issues.
