The new Apple iPhone 15 on display inside the tech giant's flagship store in Regent Street, central London. A slower-than-expected recovery in China, the world's largest smartphone market, also weighed on overall phone sales. Apple and Transsion were the only brands in the top five to record growth in shipments last year, when the market declined 3.2% to 1.17 billion units and hit a decade low. Apple, however, is facing pressure in China from a resurgent Huawei as well as from budget Chinese brands. The iPhone-maker is offering rare discounts of as much as 5% on some models in the country to attract customers.

Apple's iPhone sales in China were down more than 30% year over year for the first week of January, while competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei have "remained much stronger" with flat sales, according to a Sunday note from Jefferies analysts. Jefferies analysts said they believe Apple's iPhone volume will fall by double digits this year in China, adding that they "expect Apple to have even higher revenue pressure in China in 2024." Huawei gained the most smartphone market share in China in 2023, according to the note, rising about 6% year over year. Meanwhile, Apple's market share in China has fallen around 4% year over year, according to the note. The Jefferies analysts said iPhone discounts in China are on the rise, which is likely part of Apple's effort to "defend its share."

ASML sells lithography machines that are a key part of the chip manufacturing process. The NXT:2050i and NXT:2100i, which are caught up in the Dutch government's latest export curbs, are DUV lithography machines. The revocation of the shipping license comes after the U.S. government tightened export controls on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking tools to China in October, building on previous rules. ASML said it does not expect the revocation of its export license of U.S. export controls "to have a material impact on our financial outlook for 2023." The company has previously said it expects fourth-quarter net sales of between 6.7 billion euros and 7.1 billion euros ($7.34 billion and 7.78 billion).

Apple iPhone 15 series devices are displayed for sale at The Grove Apple retail store on release day in Los Angeles, California, on September 22, 2023. The tax case against Apple was part of EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager's crackdown against deals between multinationals and EU countries which regulators saw as unfair state aid. The General Court in 2020 upheld Apple's challenge, saying that regulators had not met the legal standard to show Apple had enjoyed an unfair advantage. Advocate General Giovanni Pitruzzella at the EU Court of Justice (CJEU) said CJEU judges should set aside the General Court ruling and refer the case back to the lower tribunal. "The judgment of the General Court on 'tax rulings' adopted by Ireland in relation to Apple should be set aside," he said in a non-binding opinion.
