The small, primarily digital newsrooms are members of the Institute for Nonprofit News. On primary nights and the general election, AP will give these outlets ready-to-publish graphics with national and local results, along with information gleaned from talking to voters from AP's VoteCast survey. AP plays a central role tabulating results across the country on election nights, using them to declare winners of contested races, along with seeking an in-depth view of what is on voters' minds. Some larger and national organizations offer consumers detailed election information, but usually don’t have the capacity to cover local races of interest to readers of INN publications, he said. The organization's members have a median of four staffers and $271,000 in revenue, he said.

CNN —A second former player has sued the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, accusing the team of overlooking his complaints that then-video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted him leading up to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Attorneys for the unnamed player, who is referred to as “John Doe” in the lawsuit, say he was inspired by former Blackhawks player Kyle Beach, who sued the team in 2021 over its handling of similar sexual assault allegations Beach made against Aldrich in 2010. The Blackhawks declined to comment on specific details of the suit, in a Monday statement, citing ongoing litigation. The report concluded that Aldrich had engaged in sexual misconduct in 2010 and senior Blackhawks leaders failed to “promptly and thoroughly investigate” Beach’s assault allegation. Aldrich resigned from the Blackhawks in 2010.

Casting 2024 as a transition year, the group said that historic stock problems would continue to drag on sales and profitability during its current financial year, and it forecast sales declines of 5% to 15%. In its 2025 financial year, ASOS said it expected to return to growth with core earnings margin around pre-COVID levels. By Sarah Morland(Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council on Thursday renewed for one year its sanctions regime on Haiti, which currently includes just one individual, as Haiti and China called for faster action. "This situation of only one person on the designated list must be changed as soon as possible," said China's deputy U.N. Many Caribbean leaders have pointed to the United States as the source of illegal firearms flooding the region. Earlier this month, the U.N. authorized deployment of a multinational force to Haiti to aid police, as requested by Haiti's unelected government a year ago. Ambassador Antonio Rodrigue commended the vote while calling on nations to be more proactive in combating arms trafficking.

REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Monday questioned a Verizon executive about the company’s decision to always pre-install Google’s Chrome browser with Google search on its mobile phones, as the government sought to show that Alphabet’s Google broke antitrust law to maintain its dominance in online search. Antonio Rangel, who teaches behavioral biology at the California Institute of Technology, testified last week that people are likely to stick with defaults like search engines or map apps on computers and mobile phones. In response, Google lawyer John Schmidtlein showed the court data indicating that users happily stick with Google’s search engine when pre-installed on their devices but switch away from others they like less. Companies have defended themselves by emphasizing that their services are free, as in the case of Google, or inexpensive, as in the case of Amazon.com. He may decide simply to order Google to stop practices he has found to be illegal or he may order Google to sell assets.

The trial began Tuesday with talk of the "future of the internet" but quickly plunged into the weeds of commercial agreements with Android makers like Motorola and Samsung. James Kolotouros, a Google executive responsible for negotiating the company's agreements with Android device makers and carriers, testified late in the week that Google pressed Android smartphone makers to have Google as the default search engine and other Google apps pre-installed on their machines. The antitrust fight has major implications for Big Tech, which has spent years being scrutinized by Congress and antitrust enforcers. Google argues that its search engine is wildly popular because of its quality, and payments to wireless companies or others were compensation for partners. The government also questioned a former Google executive, Chris Barton, who was at Google from 2004 to 2011.

Google's antitrust trial is in full swing. However, one expert testified that switching from Google to Bing on an Android 12 was a 10-step process. Chris Barton, who worked for Google from 2004 to 2011, testified that he made it a priority to negotiate for Google to be the default search engine on mobile devices. He said he acquired an Android 12 phone and studied the process required to replace the Google search engine with Bing; it took 10 steps. Barton, however, testified that Google wasn't the only search engine seeking default status with phone companies.

An illuminated Google logo is seen inside an office building in Zurich, Switzerland December 5, 2018. Rangel discussed how consumers were likely to stick with browsers on computers and mobile phones that were pre-installed as the default application. John Schmidtlein, a lawyer for Google, during cross-examination of Rangel, pointed out that a significant number of user search queries went to Google even when another search engine was the default. Google's clout in search, the government alleges, has helped Google build monopolies in some aspects of online search advertising. Search is free, so Google makes money through advertising.

Why It Matters: Many places have suffered sweltering heat and humidity. Many daily temperature records were set in June across the Southern United States, particularly in Texas and Louisiana. Temperatures in Laredo, Texas, reached 100 degrees on more than 20 days in June. The heat index, which also accounts for humidity, was well past 100 much of the time in all of these cities. Summer heat waves in Europe last year may have killed 61,000 people across the continent, according to a recent study.

It happened Sunday evening on Governors Island at the start of “duel c,” a movement piece by Andros Zins-Browne. Along with several other audience members, I was standing inside “Moving Chains,” a large kinetic sculpture by Charles Gaines that is shaped like a ship open at both ends. The subject of “Moving Chains” is weighty: no less than slavery. “Duel c” wrestled with burdensome themes, but in a playful tone. This light approach to heavy subjects proved consistent across the two other dance performances I saw last week as part of River to River, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s free summer arts festival.

CNN —In perhaps the most eagerly anticipated club game of the season, Manchester City and Real Madrid go head-to-head for a place in the Champions League final on Wednesday. While Man City is the form team in Europe at the moment, Madrid has serious pedigree when it comes to the Champions League with five titles in the past nine years – and a record 14 overall. Erling Haaland (center) trains ahead of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. The Champions League is the one trophy that has so far eluded Pep Guardiola’s side, which fell short against Madrid in the semifinals last year and against Chelsea in the final the year before that. “We are not stupid to [not] know how important tomorrow’s game is, maybe one of the most important games since we have been here, we cannot deny that.
Man City outclass Real Madrid to reach Champions League final

MANCHESTER, England, May 17 (Reuters) - Manchester City marched into the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons after outclassing holders Real Madrid 4-0 for a 5-1 aggregate victory at a raucous Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. With Inter Milan awaiting in the final, City will now be huge favourites to finally deliver the trophy Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour has craved since buying the club in 2008, having lost to Chelsea two years ago. Just as in the Spanish capital, City took an early stranglehold with Real barely stringing two passes together and finding it almost impossible to escape their own half. City toyed with the 14-times champions for the rest of the half and could have been further ahead. With their place in the Istanbul showpiece secured, City can win their fifth Premier League title in six seasons this weekend and they also have an FA Cup final to look forward to.
