Defending President Joe Biden and ripping into Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris got one of her most roaring responses in years as she spoke at a fundraiser Saturday afternoon in Provincetown, Massachusetts. But we are a group of people who understand anything worthwhile takes a lot of hard work,” Harris said. It takes believing in something and then going forward.”The event was scheduled weeks ago, in very different political circumstances. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — who is seen by some leading Democrats as a potential running mate, should Harris become the nominee — spoke before Harris and also received a warm reception from the crowd. JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

President Joe Biden speaks during the NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Crow told the president that he needs to understand that voters aren’t seeing him that way. At one point, Biden told Crow, “I don’t want to hear that crap” and that if Crow wants to walk away from him, then he can walk away. Separately, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, shared concerns with Biden that he was losing ground in her state. Biden pushed back, suggesting that he didn’t believe that, which prompted Houlahan to tell Biden that she had polling and it is what she is seeing.

Greg Landsman is interviewed in his Longworth Building office, Washington D.C., on November 3. Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc/Getty ImagesThe assassination attempt on Donald Trump “overtook” conversations about whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race, Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio said on CNN Tuesday. On “CNN This Morning” Tuesday, Kasie Hunt asked Landsman, “Are you ready to tell President Biden that you think he should step aside?”“No. First and foremost, what we all witnessed on Saturday was this, an attempted assassination on … former President Trump’s life,” Landsman responded. “My concerns about the president’s ability to make this case against Donald Trump, I’ve expressed those concerns to leadership,” Landsman said.

Many of the questions that predated Saturday evening’s assassination attempt have largely faded into the background as former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and their respective allies rush to adapt their campaigns to the new landscape. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” Trump told the Washington Examiner of his convention speech following the assassination attempt. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said. The former president has, so far, been restrained in his response to the attempt on his life. Other members of his party have not, with some immediately suggesting – without evidence – that the alleged gunman was driven to act by heated campaign rhetoric.

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday released her first statement since the assassination attempt against Donald Trump on Saturday. Secret Service personnel on the ground moved quickly during the incident, with our counter sniper team neutralizing the shooter and our agents implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of former president Donald Trump. The security plans for National Special Security Events are designed to be flexible. The Secret Service is tasked with the tremendous responsibility of protecting the current and former leaders of our democracy.

A film director also was wounded when a gun held by Baldwin fired a live round during a scene rehearsal at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a movie set outside Santa Fe. Special prosecutors intend to portray Baldwin as repeatedly flouting safety protocols on the movie set in the days before the fatal shooting, according to a court filing last month. Baldwin has previously stated to CNN that he did not pull the trigger during the fatal shooting, though he said he did cock the hammer of the gun. “I never took a gun and pointed at somebody and clicked the thing,” Baldwin said in the 2022 interview. Aurelien Morissard/Pool/AFP/Getty ImagesThe result of Sunday’s parliamentary election runoff comes as a huge surprise, with France appearing to be on the verge of a major political shift – but not the one everyone was expecting. No pollster predicted before Sunday that a left-wing alliance would win and that the far right would come in third place. The political maneuvering by French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party and the left-wing alliance this week was clearly successful. But the left-wing alliance, which has seemed shaky, is going to have a hard time speaking with one voice. While it appears to have partially worked by keeping the far right from power, it has also plunged France into unprecedented political chaos.

One theory about why Macron called an election now is that France might soon have been forced to the polls anyway. When Macron was reelected as president in 2022, his party failed to win an outright majority in parliament. Another theory is that Macron is gambling he can defeat extremist parties by exposing them to government. Some argue Macron hoped that, by giving the RN time in government before, they would have time to prove disappointing to voters. Jordan Bardella has said he will refuse to govern a minority government, meaning France could be left in deadlock in a mess of Macron’s making.

Smith has argued in court filings that the indictment’s allegations against Trump, particularly regarding the fraudulent electors plot, represent a far more sweeping case. The Supreme Court’s opinion did not address the fake electors scheme specifically. Trump called the decision a “BIG WIN!” on social media. What is far more important for Trump is the Supreme Court’s pending decision on his argument for sweeping immunity on charges for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Read a full breakdown of the Supreme Court’s January 6 ruling.

Advocacy groups are petitioning Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to include extreme heat and wildfire smoke as major disasters in the same way they do for hurricanes and other major disasters and emergencies. Extreme heat is by far the most deadly kind of weather, killing on average more than twice as many people each year as hurricanes and tornadoes combined, according to data tracked by the National Weather Service. But as CNN as previously reported, FEMA’s hands are tied by congress and the Stafford Act — the federal law that gives FEMA the power to respond to emergencies and determines what qualifies as one. The petition notes that the Stafford Act can be easily amended as it was just a few years ago to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other side of the country, a dangerous, long-duration heat wave is tightening its grip on the Northeast and parts of the Midwest.

A truck carrying aid for delivery into Gaza drives through the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Israel, on June 17. Netanyahu then contacted his military secretary and said this was unacceptable, until he was assured the fighting in Rafah would continue. It raises the question of where the “tactical pause” order originated, but it’s expected to continue. Israeli security minister Ben Gvir — a leading right-wing member of the country’s cabinet — condemned the pause. Fighting and deadly strikes: Fierce fighting and airstrikes have rocked Rafah as the Israeli effort to destroy Hamas in Gaza continues.

The Supreme Court justices suggested that abortion opponents had other ways to seek stricter rules for abortion drugs in the court’s unanimous ruling that rejected a group of anti-abortion organizations and doctors challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s current regulations for a widely used pill. Much of Kavanaugh’s opinion covered the various legal thresholds a plaintiff must reach to make it appropriate for courts to intervene in a dispute. He noted that federal law already protects individual health care providers who have objections to performing abortions for moral reasons. “In short, given the broad and comprehensive conscience protections guaranteed by federal law, the plaintiffs have not shown—and cannot show—that FDA’s actions will cause them to suffer any conscience injury,” Kavanaugh wrote. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurrence to bring up other issues he had with the anti-abortion groups’ standing claims.

One juror who found Hunter Biden guilty of three federal gun charges on Tuesday told CNN that he does not believe the president’s son should serve jail time. “I really don’t think that Hunter belongs in jail,” Juror 10 said. The juror pointed to the fact that Hunter Biden did not want the gun back after Hallie Biden took it out of his truck and threw it in the garbage near a grocery store. The juror said it didn’t make a difference for him that Hunter Biden did not take the stand in his own defense. “No politics came into play and politics was not even spoken about,” the juror said, reiterating it was all about Hunter Biden.

CNN —Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testified on Monday at a House subcommittee hearing about the US response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the origins of the virus. The hearing was Fauci’s first public testimony on Capitol Hill since his retirement from government service. It turned contentious at times as Republicans grilled Fauci over a wide range of topics, including the basis for public health recommendations during the pandemic and email use by public health officials. Fauci said there was a “disconnect between the health-care system and the public health system” during Covid-19 in the US. That’s in large part why public health agencies emphasized the importance of people wearing masks to reduce the number of germs that could float in the air and make people sick.

CNN —As Australian women push for action on domestic violence – a problem described by the country’s prime minister as a “national crisis” – one state has appointed a special official charged with improving men’s behavior. Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan announced Wednesday that state MP Tim Richardson would serve as the inaugural Parliamentary Secretary for Men’s Behavior Change – the first position of its kind in the country. Richardson said he would focus on the influence the internet and social media have on male attitudes towards women, and on building respectful relationships. Last year, 64 women were murdered, the group said. Women should not be responsible for ending violence against women,” he said at the time.
