Without continued Western support for Ukraine's war efforts, the consequences could be dire, according to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who warned of a "big crisis" not just for Ukraine but for other countries as well. Zelenskyy has been warning about that worst case scenario outcome for months, as have experts and top war watchers. The roughly $111 billion package, which includes aid to Ukraine and Israel, has been held up by Republicans since October 2023. Should US aid to Ukraine dry up, it'll be a test of how Ukraine's European allies can fill in the gaps. Chuck Schumer Doesn’t Know How Gas Prices Work

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) gives remarks at a press conference in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, Nov. 15. Photo: Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesSenate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and 22 Democratic senators recently wrote to Federal Trade Commission Chairman Lina Khan calling for an investigation into the proposed mergers between Exxon Mobil and Pioneer Natural Resources and Chevron and Hess . The letter argues that these mergers will enable “anticompetitive coordination in the industry” and raise U.S. gasoline prices. A fair assessment of the proposed mergers and the fossil-fuel market doesn’t reveal a firm legal and economic basis to initiate antitrust enforcement proceedings against these deals. If the senators really want a competitive energy market that supplies American consumers with lower-priced fuel, they should support these mergers, not obstruct them.

Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) said Thursday that he won’t run for another term in the U.S. Senate, as he faced a tough re-election bid in a state that has turned more conservative during his tenure. The decision is expected to hurt Democrats’ effort to hold on to the Senate, which they currently control 51-49. The U.S. Department of Justice's case against Google Search went to trial last month , with the agency alleging Google unfairly used exclusive deals with mobile companies and browser firms to make its search engine the default for consumers. The Wall Street analyst estimated that Apple earns between $18 billion to $20 billion a year from Alphabet for making Google the default search engine on Apple products. Google has repeatedly rejected the DOJ's claims, arguing its search engine is simply a superior product relative to that of competitors. New York CNN —Starbucks violated federal labor law when it increased wages and offered new perks and benefits only to non-union employees, a National Labor Relations Board judge found Thursday. The decision is the latest in a series of NLRB rulings finding that Starbucks has violated labor law in its efforts to stop unions from forming in its coffee shops. Last year, Starbucks announced that it would raise wages for non-union employees, and offer them other new benefits. Starbucks should also post a notice in its cafes telling workers that the NLRB found Starbucks had violated federal labor law, and detailing employee rights, she said. Thursday’s decision was “a massive victory for Starbucks workers,” Starbucks Workers United, which has been leading the union charge, said in a statement to CNN.

Photo: Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesThis column has lamented the modern evolution of the New York Times from left-leaning journalism to edgy content for progressives—“a juicy collection of great narratives,” in the words of the Times’s former media columnist. Having decided to cater to a limited and fiercely ideological slice of the public with its flagship newspaper, the New York Times Co. then opted to look for growth in entertainment products with broader appeal. But the reaction to a New York Times column this week raises the exciting possibility that even the newspaper’s readers have consumed about all the juicy progressive narratives they can stand. It’s unclear whether this is a precise reading of liberal sentiment, but one dares to hope that the entire Democratic Party might finally be ready to evolve out of its era of radical excess. The timing could be perfect as a warning from one influential leftist suggests that many of the party’s voters still don’t realize how much their ideas will cost them.
