Canada is part of a consortium that helped develop Lockheed Martin's F-35 and Ottawa will pay the same amount for the aircraft as the other participants, including the United States.

OTTAWA, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Canada has finalized a deal to buy 88 F-35 fighter jets from U.S. defense company Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) in a C$19 billion ($14.2 billion) project to replace its aging fleet of fighter aircraft, the Canadian government said on Monday. The purchase of F-35 stealth fighters would mark the largest investment in the Canadian Air Force in more than 30 years. The F-35 fighter deal announcement coincides with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's trip to Mexico on Monday for the North American leaders' summit where he will meet U.S. President Joe Biden. The C$19 billion project includes cost of infrastructure set-up, weapons and other related expenses in addition to the price of planes.

Canada's military has been under pressure in the face of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years, including some against high-ranking officers. Previous promises of reform have fallen flat but "this time is different," Defence Minister Anita Anand told reporters. Her report said she expects the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces to remove themselves from investigating and prosecuting sexual offences. She gave no time frame but her report said the military "must address potential issues" including cases taking place outside Canada. In the past year the military has referred 57 sexual offence cases to civilian police, military officials told a briefing Monday.

"I'm so pleased that there is such an interest by the Caribbean countries to be part of any solution," Trudeau told reporters in Winnipeg. "But, of course, before we establish any sort of mission, we need to see a clear plan of action." When asked, neither Trudeau nor his defense minister, who was also at the news conference, responded as to whether Canada would be willing to deploy its armed forces as security in a Haiti mission. Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand announced the package, which builds on about C$600 million in military equipment that Canada has donated or committed since Russia began its invasion on Feb. 24. More than 50 Western countries met on Wednesday to promise more weapons for Ukraine, especially air defences after Russia launched its most intense missile strikes since the war began. Canada said on Tuesday it will send 40 more combat engineers to help support Polish efforts to train Ukrainian forces. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls Moscow's actions a "special military operation" to ensure Russian security and protect Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Ukraine and its allies accuse Moscow of waging war to grab territory or even occupy a pro-Western neighbor.
