Sept 23 (Reuters) - Facial recognition technology used on match tickets by top flight soccer club Palmeiras has helped the Sao Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrest 28 criminals in four games at the Allianz Parque stadium, the government body said on Friday. However, its use has also helped the SSP apprehend criminals before they enter the stadium to watch the team play. "We invested in the implementation of facial recognition to protect our greatest asset, which is the Palmeiras fans," club president Leila Pereira said in a statement. The facial recognition technology at matches allows real-time analysis to detect fans who have bought tickets from touts, the use of false or third-party documents, outstanding arrest warrants, non-compliance with court orders and sanctions. The SSP have issued arrest warrants related to theft, embezzlement, robbery and drug trafficking.

Klopp expecting 'solid' West Ham to be tricky opponents

Sept 22 (Reuters) - West Ham United are one of the Premier League's strongest teams, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday, as he urged his side to be at their very best against last season's Europa Conference League winners. Liverpool are three points ahead in third, but Klopp warned his side not to be complacent against the team managed by veteran boss David Moyes. "There are so many extremely strong opponents, West Ham is one of them," Klopp told a press conference. "With all the other guys they had already, it looks really solid and that makes it really tricky. Sept 15 (Reuters) - New Zealand's SailGP team will not be able to compete in Taranto, Italy, due to the impossibility of transporting and fitting a replacement wing sail in time, SailGP said on Friday. The dramatic collapse of the New Zealand team's 29-metre wing sail was caused by a misalignment in Saint-Tropez last weekend. Following the incident, SailGP investigated options for transporting a spare wing from the fleet and assembling it so the team would be ready to compete, but this has been prevented by shipping deadlines. SailGP said it is working to find a solution that will allow New Zealand to return to the starting line on Oct. 14-15 in Cadiz, Spain. After three events in the season, New Zealand is in fifth place with 17 points.

Aug 27 (Reuters) - It took 86 years, but Atletico Mineiro have finally been crowned as Brazil's first club champion after the country's football confederation (CBF) officially recognised their winning of the 1937 "Tournament of Champions" as comparable to a Brazilian Serie A Championship. Atletico can now add a third title to their history along with the 1971 and 2021 victories thanks to the decision of the body headed by Ednaldo Rodrigues to grant the club recognition of the long-standing title. The pioneering interstate tournament brought together five state champions of 1936 from different regions of Brazil and a delegation of the sports club of the navy. It was the first of national relevance to involve clubs that moved to the professional model, such as Fluminense and Atletico itself. After claiming the "Brasileirao" in 2021, Atletico requested recognition of the title they won almost a century ago.
