The Broadway musical “The Phantom of the Opera” announced in September that it would be closing in February because of declining ticket sales, but plans have changed. On Tuesday, the show’s producer, Cameron Mackintosh, announced the show will now run until April 16. An unexpected bolster in sales, as well as a busy Thanksgiving week, helped the longest-running show in Broadway history earn $2.2 million in sales last week, according to The New York Times. “We’ve sold out virtually everything that we have on sale.”The musical will celebrate its 35th anniversary in January. With music by famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Phantom” features a masked music lover who haunts the Paris Opera House.
(CNN) Broadway's longest-running show, Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," will play its final five months before closing its doors for good, a spokesperson for the show told CNN Friday. The final performance will take place on Saturday, February, 18, 2023, at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, Michael Borowski of The Publicity Office said in an email. Prior to the Broadway show's conclusion, "Phantom" will celebrate its 35th anniversary on January 26 with director Seth Sklar-Heyn at the helm, Borowski said. Ticket sales had slowed for Broadway shows during the pandemic and "Phantom" was no exception, recently dropping from 255,000 weekly attendees in May to about 180,000 attendees in September, according to The Broadway League. The show's flagship London production will celebrate its 36th year on October 9 and the recently premiered Melbourne version will likewise continue.
“Phantom” is a staple within the Broadway world with over 70 major theater wins and 13,733 performances since its debut in 1988. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux and was originally directed by Harold Prince. “Phantom” tells the 19th century story of aspiring opera singer Christine Daae who is taught by the mysterious Phantom to hone her vocal skills. However, things take a dark turn when the Phantom chooses Christine as his muse, and she falls in love with an arts benefactor named Raoul.
