The job for the United States women’s soccer team on Tuesday is clear, because that job never changes. The United States must get past Portugal to advance at the Women’s World Cup because that it what is needed, what is expected, what is required. It’s just kind of, why are you coming to the World Cup if you don’t think you should win it? The United States is a team in transition, a mix of veteran World Cup champions and fresh-faced World Cup rookies that has struggled both to dominate weaker teams and to unlock stronger ones. The United States knows it has arrived at a special moment in this World Cup.

CNN —US coach Vlatko Andonovski said it was “insane” for anyone to question the team’s commitment as he responded to criticism from former American international soccer star Carli Lloyd. “Everyone is entitled to opinion and, you know, they can say whatever they want, but I just know how this team feels,” he added. “We know that it’s not good enough … We’re not happy with our performance, but we qualify for the next round. “The performances aren’t where we want them,” experienced forward Megan Rapinoe, who came on as a second-half substitute against Portugal, told reporters. It’s clear, as the players themselves know, that things haven’t clicked for Andonovski’s team yet.

CNN —After the thrill of winning successive Women’s World Cup titles, the 2023 tournament – so far – has brought the US team very much down to earth with a bump. For a team that has been so historically dominant at the Women’s World Cup, performances throughout the 2023 edition so far have been underwhelming for women’s soccer’s most dynastic team. Fans of the US team get ready for the Women's World Cup group game against Portugal. 3 ranked in the world by FIFA, has plenty of World Cup history. Sweden drew with the US in 2015 and also beat them in 2011 – the last time any team defeated the USWNT inside regulation at a World Cup.

The Americans, who have never been eliminated from the group stage in World Cup history, have not yet hit peak form. They beat minnows Vietnam 3-0, and a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands left both teams locked on four points. "For us the most important thing is getting into the knockout stage, first and foremost," U.S. coach Vlatko Andonovski said. The Group E runners-up could face Sweden, currently leading Group G after thrashing Italy 5-0, in the last 16. "It would be nice to perhaps avoid Sweden in the next rounds," said Dutch forward Lieke Martens, who was part of the team that beat Sweden in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals.

On paper, it would appear that the top-ranked Americans should have every advantage over the Portugal team ranked 20 rungs beneath them at Tuesday's showdown at Eden Park. "Rankings mean nothing in the World Cup," he said. The United States overcame Portugal 1-0 in their last meeting - a 2021 friendly - but Andonovski sees little comparison between the two sides today. Failure to do so would mean missing the knockout stages for the first time in nine World Cup appearances. "Now we see an interesting result every day, every other day, there's something that everybody's shocked (over)."

Megan Rapinoe Is Not Going Quietly

Sitting on the bench as her United States team played at the Women’s World Cup last week, Megan Rapinoe was sure that she was in the wrong spot. “I’m always shocked when I don’t play,” Rapinoe said with a laugh, joking with reporters on Sunday about her uneasy new role: reserve. For the first time in 12 years, Rapinoe, the outspoken and accomplished leader of the U.S. team for the past decade, is watching the World Cup instead of starring in it. Rapinoe, 38, expected this World Cup to be a sort of changing of the guard, of course. She is the oldest player on the team, and on the eve of her team’s departure for New Zealand, she announced that this would be her final World Cup and her final professional season.

AUCKLAND, July 29 (Reuters) - The United States must find their rhythm after falling out of sync in their 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, midfielder Andi Sullivan said, with everything on the line for their final match of the Women's World Cup group stage on Tuesday. The four-times champions face a do-or-die meeting with debutantes Portugal in their last Group E game, where they must win or draw to avoid the humiliation of missing the knockout stage for the first time. "(Portugal are) a strong team, going to be a tough game, we know what's on the line," Sullivan told reporters on Saturday. If the U.S. team and the 2017 European Champions both win next week, the winner of Group E could come down to goal differential. "We're going to need to play fast and score a lot of goals," said Sullivan, who is competing in her first World Cup.

WELLINGTON, July 27 (Reuters) - The United States have yet to produce their best performance at the Women's World Cup, coach Vlatko Andonovski said on Thursday, after the Netherlands held them to a frustrating 1-1 draw in their second match of the tournament in Wellington. It was the first World Cup draw that the United States have seen since Sweden held them 0-0 at the tournament in 2015. I've said this before, this team is not just young, this team is also a fresh team," said Andonovski. "We're just going to get better from game to game and we're going to be a lot more efficient as well." The United States close out their Group E against Portugal on Tuesday.

The Dutch struck first through a fine shot from midfielder Jill Roord in the 17th minute and the U.S. went in at halftime trailing in a World Cup match for the first time since 2011. The Americans had not drawn a World Cup match since 2015 and will rue a slow start to the game as well as an inability to take their chances at the end. Andonovski, who also put 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson on as a late substitute, said that the playing time will pay major dividends as the tournament progresses. "I do also believe that going into game two, they will go a little more encouraged, less nerves, no stress," said Andonovski. CNN —The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) kicked off their Women’s World Cup campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Vietnam. A brace from US soccer’s newest superstar Sophia Smith and a late goal from Lindsey Horan was enough to give the defending champion a dream start as it begins a historic World Cup campaign. The USWNT are chasing a third World Cup in a row and could not have asked for a better start, dominating proceedings from the outset before Smith opened the scoring just 14 minutes into her World Cup debut. The Portland Thorns forward squeezed the ball into the net – albeit with a much scrappier effort than her opener. As chances came and went for the USWNT, it took more brilliant work from Smith to extend the lead.

Andonovski has previously said the days of such lop-sided triumphs are long gone and that his squad were prepared to face "the best Vietnam team that has ever been on the field". "We're certainly going to come out with a team that will give us the best chance to win every game." The United States will face the Netherlands in their second Group E match next week in Wellington.

That generation gap, and how the U.S. team deals with it, is likely to be one of the prominent stories of the World Cup.
