CNN —Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors will now take effect after a federal appeals court lifted an injunction against the law. The appeals court granted a stay of a lower court injunction, which had been blocking enforcement of a part of the state’s ban. The ban prohibits health care providers from performing gender-affirming surgeries and administering hormones or puberty blockers to transgender minors, pending the duration of the appeal. In five states, providing gender-affirming care to minors is now a felony. The association says gender-affirming care creates “effective pathways to achieving lasting personal comfort with their gendered selves, in order to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being and self-fulfillment.”CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to note that a part of the Tennessee ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors took effect on July 1.

CNN —Prompt access to hormone therapy can be a key tool in improving the mental health of transgender people, according to new research. The researchers also found a clinically significant decrease in depression, with over a 50% reduction in suicidality among study participants who didn’t have to wait to start hormone therapy. Nolan’s team examined the impact of accessible testosterone therapy on the mental health of 64 transgender adults who were seeking treatment to become more masculine. Gender-affirming hormone therapy like this is considered “medically necessary” by the World Professional Organization for Transgender Health’s Standards of Care. The researchers also found less suicidal ideation among the fast-tracked group: Thoughts of suicide resolved in 11 – or 52% – of the people receiving immediate testosterone therapy who had indicated suicidal ideation on their initial screening.

CNN —A Nebraska bill combining a ban on most abortions after 12 weeks and restrictions on gender-affirming care for transgender Nebraskans under 19 is poised to become law after the state’s unicameral legislature voted for its passage Friday. It will also severely restrict most abortions at 12 weeks after legislators added a last-minute amendment to the bill on May 17. The bill makes it illegal for medical personnel to perform an abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy — with exceptions for sexual assault, incest and medical emergencies. The bill does not define “medical emergency.”The bill also bans a range of treatments that fall under the umbrella of gender affirming care. Others, like puberty blockers and other hormone treatments, are the standard of care for many trans and nonbinary youth.

CNN —For decades after returning home from World War II, my grandfather did not talk about his wartime experiences. Frank Murphy, the grandfather of CNN's Chloe Melas, after he was captured and taken a prisoner of war by the Nazis in 1943. Everyone could see the physical toll of war on his body, but we didn’t know about his invisible wounds. CNN —A transgender woman has sued Maryland’s corrections department in federal court, alleging she was improperly housed with male inmates while jailed for three months in 2021 and 2022 – and was sexually assaulted and denied hormone treatment during that time. “I’m filing this lawsuit today because I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other trans woman in the state of Maryland,” Gilliam said in a news conference Wednesday. She received hormone treatments for her gender dysphoria for 18 years before she was jailed, the suit says. After the assault, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services took no action, the lawsuit alleges. It also required her to sign a waiver saying she wouldn’t hold the public safety department liable if anything happened to her in the men’s prison, it says.
