The account, Why I Wear My Star, featured posts containing people’s reasons for wearing Star of David jewelry and other Judaica. Ms. Adams and Ms. Gabbai, who are both Jewish, said they had largely stopped updating the account until recently. Ms. Gabbai, now 21 and a senior at Florida State University, said the Instagram account is not intended to be pro-Israel. Rachie Shnay, a jewelry designer in Manhattan, said she saw several people wearing star accessories at a rally for Israel held by Jewish groups in Washington on Tuesday. The Star of David, called Magen David in Hebrew, was used by Jews in Prague as early as the 1600s.

Among the catalysts are Palestinian and Jewish-led groups that have been active for years in opposing Israeli policies toward the Palestinians and who now demand a cease-fire in Gaza. The groups have roots in a movement known as BDS, which calls for the boycott, divestment and sanction of Israel. That campaign generated heated rhetoric long before Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel launched its counteroffensive. Advocates wrote op-eds for campus newspapers with appeals to protect Palestinian human rights, often accusing Israel of colonialism and racism. Protests have led to disruptions on Capitol Hill, at a major train station in Chicago and New York City’s Grand Central Station.

The screening of “Israelism” at Hunter had been planned since June, according to Tami Gold, a professor in the film and media department who organized the screening. “Otherwise, there was no safety or security issue prior to Oct. 7,” he said. Since then, some venues have asked to postpone, and a screening at Grinnell College in Iowa was canceled. There is never a time to air this film, but especially not at a time when the A.D.L. On Friday, Anderson and Gold said, they were approached by the dean, Andrew Polsky, about security issues.

The Department of Homeland Security has determined the event will require “extensive federal interagency support,” according to law enforcement sources. American support for Israel is critical, said Eric D. Fingerhut, president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America. “Israel must eliminate the terrorist threat on its border and restore safety and security to its people,” Fingerhut added. But Israel has agreed to four-hour, daily pauses in military operations in Gaza to allow for evacuations. The website for the “March for Israel” event says organizers have been in touch with law enforcement in the lead-up to the rally and have “retained the services of additional security assets based on recommendations of law enforcement and our security advisors.”

We will either have to become captives of Netanyahu’s strategy — which could take us all down with him — or articulate our own American vision for how the Gaza war must end. That would require a Biden administration plan to create two states for two indigenous peoples living in the areas of Gaza, the West Bank and Israel. The Biden plan — are you sitting down? Resolutions 242 and 338, which was also the cornerstone for negotiations in the peace plan put forward by President Trump in 2020. Is the Palestinian Authority up to such a deal?

A rise in American Jewish gun ownership would come as a noticeable shift for a group that is historically liberal and a majority of which are registered Democrats. A 2018 American Jewish Committee poll showed 70% of Jewish respondents thought it was more important to control gun ownership than to protect Americans’ rights to own guns. The US government does not keep official statistics on gun ownership, including demographic information. Research from industry groups like the National Shooting Sports Foundation break down gun ownership by race and gender but not by religious affiliation. The spike in violence and hateful rhetoric has evoked fears within the Jewish community of another Holocaust, according to Daniel.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib is facing condemnation for endorsing the phrase "from the river to the sea." Here's what you should know about the current controversy over the slogan — as well as its origins and contemporary use. Towards the end of that video, a crowd of pro-Palestine protestors in Michigan can be heard chanting the slogan. In other words, the slogan did originate as a call for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state. For Palestinian and Muslim students, the invocation of terrorism law is especially frightening. But now advocates for Palestinian rights describe a new level of repression. “That’s the difference.”No one should underestimate how awful the campus climate is for many Jewish students, who’ve experienced a surge in violence and abuse. In some social justice circles, then, support for Israel is viewed as something akin to support for the K.K.K. There is little reason to think that the pressure brought to bear by these outside institutions is making Jewish students any safer.

Located just north of Miami Beach, the Shul of Bal Harbour is in the heart of South Florida's Jewish community. If Florida is to regain its status as a perennially competitive state, how Jewish voters perceive Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war will be critical. In South Florida, rabbis and community leaders are pushing their congregations to call their lawmakers and insist they back Israel as it ramps up its offensive. About 43% of Florida's Jewish voters supported Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, compared with 30% of Jewish voters who supported him nationwide, according to AP VoteCast. Ron DeSantis won 45% of Jewish voters in his re-election, when he flipped traditionally Democratic Miami-Dade County while also winning a majority of Latino voters statewide.

Witnesses said Israeli forces targeted Gaza's main north-south road on Monday and attacked Gaza City from two directions. Israel said its troops freed a soldier from Hamas captivity, one of 239 hostages who Israel says were captured on Oct. 7. Gaza health authorities say that 8,306 people, including 3,457 minors, have been killed in Israeli attacks since Oct. 7. Military specialists said Israeli forces are moving slowly in their ground offensive in part to keep open the possibility that Hamas militants will negotiate the release of the hostages. Netanyahu condemned the video as "cruel psychological propaganda" and said Israel's ground campaign created possibilities for rescuing the hostages.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 31 (Reuters) - Law enforcement authorities have detained a "person of interest" in connection with online threats against Jewish students at Cornell University that were posted over the weekend, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The threats called for attacks on two buildings: a kosher dining hall and the Center for Jewish Living, where about 25 Jewish students reside. Hochul said in her post on Tuesday that she had visited Jewish students at Cornell on Monday, and promised to do everything possible to find the perpetrator. About 190 of the 312 antisemitic incidents tallied by the group were linked to the war between Israel and Hamas.

Tensions between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups have sprung up on some U.S. campuses, including several in New York, prompting university officials to tighten security. "There is no place for hate in America, and we condemn any antisemitic threat or incident in the strongest terms," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told a regular briefing. The Jewish leaders included representatives of the campus Jewish organization Hillel, the Anti-Defamation League and the National Council of Jewish Women, the White House official said. Cardona and White House domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden will visit a university and meet with Jewish students later this week, the official said. Over the weekend, threats were posted online to Jewish students and the Center of Jewish Living at Cornell, according to the student newspaper and the campus Hillel group.

On June 12 of that year, Hamas kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers; soon after, Israelis murdered a Palestinian teenager. The horrific exchange escalated into a larger conflict; ultimately some 70 Israelis and 2,250 Palestinians were killed over seven weeks. I wrote that some members of my team had been tallying the number of soldiers killed and discussing whether this operation was worth the losses. In the years since, Hamas has only grown stronger, despite our sacrifices and despite the death and destruction we had wrought on Gaza. My friend not only fought against Hamas during his final moments to protect his friends and family; he also fought against Hamas during years of activism against the occupation.

First, Jewish donors probably can’t win the identity politics game. But this strategy also has inherent limits, insofar as the free speech protected by campus administrators is only as diverse as the people who are speaking. Which brings us to the second point for would-be reshapers of the university: If you can’t influence faculty hiring and tenure, you may be wasting your money. Will the University of Pennsylvania miss the collection of major donors who’ve denounced the school in the past week? But not with the goal of using such student groups as a means of conflict with the administration or the faculty.

New York CNN —A nonprofit founded by former Victoria’s Secret billionaire Leslie Wexner and his wife Abigail is breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ terror attacks against Israel. Citing the “absence of this clear moral standard,” the Wexner Foundation said it has determined the Harvard Kennedy School is no longer a “compatible” partner for its organization. The list includes Doctors Without Borders, which has had medical programs in Gaza for more than 20 years, Styron said. Their list includes American Friends of Magen David Adom, known as the Israeli Red Cross, and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, which works specifically in Gaza. That can be especially true when an issue is politically-fraught, like with the Israel-Gaza crisis.
