I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war, like the assault rifle used to carry out this crime. For the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have left in Congress. Representative Jared Golden of Maine, a centrist Democrat, called for a ban on assault weapons Thursday afternoon, reversing a long-held stance after 18 people were killed in a mass shooting in Lewiston. That position, Mr. Golden said on Thursday, reflected in part “a false confidence that our community was above this, and that we could be in full control, among many other misjudgments.”“The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure,” Mr. Golden said. Standing by him at a news conference, Senator Susan Collins, a centrist Republican, declined to back a ban on assault weapons.

After spending the night indoors, afraid to even open the curtains, Traelynn Smith, 19, and Serenity Moczara, 18, ventured out around lunchtime Thursday to get something to eat. “I’ve never seen my state like this.”Colonel Ross said on Thursday that a vehicle found at a boat landing in Lisbon, Maine, about eight miles from Lewiston, had been connected to Mr. Card. He had no combat deployments and served as a petroleum supply specialist, shipping and storing vehicle and aircraft fuel. The official said that Mr. Card was later evaluated at a mental health facility. The first 911 call reporting gunfire at the bowling alley on Wednesday came in at 6:56 p.m., Colonel Ross said.

The bus, carrying students from Farmingdale High School, was one of six coach buses traveling to an annual marching band camp in Pennsylvania, according to a spokeswoman for the Farmingdale School District. It went off the road on a section of I-84 in the town of Wawayanda, in Orange County, a spokesman for the Slate Hill Fire Department said. Details about what caused the accident were not immediately available.

New London is burning after British troops — led by Benedict Arnold — raided the town. About a month later, soldiers fight in Yorktown, Va., in the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. On a recent Saturday evening, hundreds of people gathered in the streets to burn Benedict Arnold, America’s most famous traitor, in effigy. “Burn the traitor!” onlookers screamed. “Burn him!”The procession is an annual piece of street theater, organized by Flock Theatre, a New London troupe.

“Rolling down to Old Maui, rolling down to Old Maui,” they sang. “We’re homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to Old Maui.”The centuries-old harmonies overlapped, swelling to the corners of the original ceiling. Dozens of patrons stomped on the uneven wooden floorboards as they sang, sloshing Guinness over the rims of their pint glasses. “It just gets the cobwebs out of your soul,” said Kitsie Reeves, 68, a former flight attendant who has loved sea music for decades. “It’s like a porthole into the past.”

Gino DiGiovanni Jr., a member of the local board of aldermen, beat Mayor Richard Dziekan by just 10 votes — 202 to 192 — which triggered an automatic recount, set for noon on Friday. The rise of Mr. DiGiovanni, 42, has astonished leaders in Connecticut, where 59 percent of voters cast their ballots for Joseph R. Biden Jr. in 2020. His win is also notable for Derby, an old mill city of just over 12,000 people. The presidential race was close: Mr. Biden beat Donald J. Trump in Derby by four points. So was the 2021 race for mayor: Mr. Dziekan beat his Democratic opponent by just 48 votes.

On an unseasonably warm morning in February 2017, a 75-year-old white motorist was making his way north on Interstate 95 in Westbrook, Conn., when he was pulled over by a state trooper and charged with a traffic violation. That is, at least, according to a traffic stop report filed by the officer. But no ticket appears to have been issued. In fact, there may not have been any stop. State officials believe that the trooper was among more than 100 Connecticut state police officers who may have filed false reports of traffic stops in recent years, possibly to boost the internal statistics used to measure their performance.

Andre Fa’aoso, an incoming first-year student at Yale, has been in the United States for 12 days. He arrived from New Zealand on his own, three suitcases in tow. As he pulled his luggage through downtown New Haven, Conn., a woman handed him a flier describing his new city as crime-ridden and dangerous. It listed alarming local crime statistics and instructed students to “remain on campus,” “avoid public transportation” and “stay off the streets after 8 p.m.” Illustrated with a picture of the Grim Reaper, the flier wished students an ominous “Good luck.”But perhaps most jarring was the source of the flier, listed plainly in its text: the union that represents Yale’s own campus police. In the days since the union distributed the “survival guide” leaflets, Yale administrators and police officials have been scrambling to calm first-year students and their parents.

Those who advocated instead for a bear hunt say the new law did not go far enough. They argue that bears must be taught to fear humans for their own protection, and that dead bears deter live bears from populated areas. “It’s about altering the behavior of our bears and how they perceive humans,” said Jason Hawley, the leading bear biologist at the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, adding, “Bears don’t have a negative association with humans. In fact, I’d argue that they have a positive association with humans.”Others say the law allowing people to kill bears in self-defense is dangerous, and nearly unenforceable. They are skeptical that law enforcement officials will be able to determine if people truly felt threatened before shooting.

A black bear attacked a young boy outside his home in Bedford, N.Y., on Tuesday morning, but his parents were able to scare the animal away and save their son, officials said. By the time emergency workers arrived, the boy’s mother, a doctor, had bandaged him, said Carlos Cano, the chief of the Armonk Fire Department. Mr. Cano’s colleagues, who responded to the scene, told him that the bear appeared to have grabbed the boy, who he said was about 7. When officers arrived, the bear was still in the family’s yard, and they shot it. The North Castle, N.Y., police department said the animal had presented a danger to emergency and workers and residents.

Three people in the New York City area have died in recent weeks and a fourth person was hospitalized after contracting infections from a flesh-eating bacteria that can be caused by eating raw oysters or swimming in saltwater, health officials in New York and Connecticut said. Infections from the bacteria, called Vibrio vulnificus, are rare but extremely dangerous. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in five people who become infected die. People with open wounds should avoid swimming in warm seawater, he said. And people with compromised immune systems should be careful with eating or handling raw seafood.

New Canaan, a wealthy town in Connecticut, is a town of lawns. Lawns, trim and bug-free, lined with sculpted shrubs. Lawns, like so many lawns across suburban America, sprayed with pesticides each spring, mowed each week of summer and raked free of leaves each fall. But Bill and Mary-Ellen McDonald have taken a different approach. “These fireflies are here, and really only here,” Mr. McDonald, 75, said on a recent Friday evening, the sky fading to lilac.

Look down, and you may find yourself standing in a “good luck spot,” drawn in pastel pink or blue or yellow. Or maybe a “bad luck spot.” Or maybe many bad luck spots. “It’s like a practical joke,” Mr. Morelo, 51, said on a recent afternoon, his hands dusty with chalk. Some days, Mr. Morelo fills an entire stretch of sidewalk with bad luck anemones, leaving only a small path between them. Or he may draw one huge bad luck sinkhole, right where skateboarders gather.

When Brigette Ramirez and her family drove to Houston for a Taylor Swift concert, she made a very important pit stop. Three, actually: T.J. Maxx, T.J. Maxx and T.J. Maxx. Her plan was to add them to tap water, pour the concoction into a Stanley tumbler, film herself doing it and (hopefully) go viral on TikTok. In this latest chapter of America’s obsession with hydration, the thirsty are zhuzhing up tap water for all to see on TikTok under the banner of #WaterTok. They show off elaborately organized “water bars” stocked with sugar-free syrups, low-calorie powders flavored like Skittles and Nerds candy, and brightly colored tumblers.
Is Everyone Playing Padel Without Us?

SANTIAGO, Chile — There are only a handful of places to play pickleball here in Chile’s capital. In its place, a padel court will rise. “There’s just not enough people for it to be a profitable business right now,” said Nicolas Flores, 34, a founder of the Chile Padel Academy, said. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, while padel (pronounced PAH-del) is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. If pickleball is Fahrenheit, padel is Celsius.
Mr. Penny has not been charged in Mr. Neely’s death and it is unclear if he will be. Mr. Neely’s death, they said, was an unnecessary tragedy that underscores the city’s inadequate policies toward its most vulnerable and marginalized residents. Mayor Eric Adams called Mr. Neely’s death “tragic,” but urged patience as officials complete the investigation. What happened on the F train? The police said they received a call at 2:27 p.m. on Monday about a fight on an F train at the Broadway-Lafayette Street subway station in Manhattan.
