Amazon predicts bright holiday season, cloud stabilizing
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Facing an array of challenges to its business, Amazon is trying to keep its mantle as the world's biggest cloud provider and online retailer. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission in September sued Amazon for allegedly inflating prices and wielding monopoly power, claims that Amazon has disputed. Microsoft, the second-largest cloud provider by revenue after Amazon, beat Wall Street estimates this week as its customers geared up for AI upgrades. Amazon Web Services brought in revenue of $23.1 billion, compared with analysts' expectations of $23.09 billion. For the current holiday quarter, the company forecast revenue in the range of $160 billion and $167 billion.

Dash Cart users are required to sign in to the cart using an Amazon or Whole Foods account. At the time, Amazon made the Dash Cart available at select Whole Foods stores, in addition to many of its Fresh grocery stores. Once personalized ads are rolled out, Dash Cart users would get ads based on things like the area of the store they are in. Dash Cart users are able to automatically check-out products placed in the cart without having to go through a cashier. But its physical stores revenue, mostly coming from Whole Foods and its Fresh grocery stores, grew just 6% year-over-year last quarter to $5 billion.

Amazon on Tuesday announced a new version of its cashierless checkout system, allowing customers to buy clothing without having to wait in line. The updated version of the company's Just Walk Out system incorporates radio-frequency identification, or RFID, technology, and each item in a store will feature an RFID tag. Avery Dennison, a materials science and digital identification company, built the RFID technology, according to Amazon. If retailers adopt the technology, it could mark a significant expansion for Amazon's Just Walk Out system.

It's been three years since Amazon introduced Amazon Fresh, its second chain of supermarkets. I visited an Amazon Fresh store in Maryland to see what might be rubbing consumers the wrong way. It has also canceled some Amazon Fresh store openings. Are you an Amazon Fresh employee with a story idea to share?

Instacart, the grocery delivery company that slashed its valuation during last year's market slide, filed its paperwork to go public on Friday in what's poised to be the first significant venture-backed tech IPO since December 2021. In May, Instacart said it was leaning into the generative AI boom with Ask Instacart, a search tool that aims to answer customers' grocery shopping questions. Instacart will try and crack open the IPO market, which has been mostly closed since late 2021. In March of last year, Instacart slashed its valuation to $24 billion from $39 billion as public stocks sank. Apoorva Mehta, Instacart's founder and executive chairman, plans to transition off the board after the company's public market debut, according to a 2022 release.

Amazon is cutting some of its private label brands as part of a broader effort to rein in costs, the company confirmed to CNBC. The number of Amazon's private label brands has expanded rapidly over the years to include things like Goodthreads apparel, Rivet furniture and Presto! Matt Taddy, Vice President of Amazon Private Brands, said in a statement that the company has looked to eliminate some in-house products after determining they didn't resonate with customers. Amazon has said sales from private label brands represent only 1% of its total retail sales. You may no longer need a Prime membership to order groceries from Amazon Fresh. Amazon said this week that non-Prime members in some cities can now order deliveries through Fresh. Earlier this week, the retail giant began allowing some customers without Amazon Prime subscriptions to order fresh produce without a membership, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. It's also tried to build out its network of Amazon Fresh stores but has struggled — leading to layoffs of hundreds of workers and an expansion pause. Amazon cuts jobs at Fresh grocery stores

Amazon is cutting some jobs at its Fresh grocery stores, CNBC has confirmed. The company said it's restructuring the in-store staffing and operations model at its Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., and as a result is eliminating its "zone lead" role. Amazon has been determined to crack the grocery segment since the launch of its Fresh delivery service in 2007. Earlier this year, Amazon said it would close some Fresh and Go stores as part of CEO Andy Jassy's effort to rein in costs. The job cuts at Amazon Fresh come after the company initiated its most expansive layoffs in its history, eliminating roughly 27,000 employees since late last year.

Bowery, a vertical farming company that grows crops indoors, is getting more shelf space at Amazon 's Whole Foods, with a deal to triple the stores stocking its salad kits. Currently, Bowery's salad kits and a selection of greens are carried at 50 Whole Foods Market stores in the Northeast. The deal comes amid challenges for both vertical farming and Amazon's efforts to expand its grocery footprint. The vertical farming industry, meanwhile, has been under pressure, like many formerly high-flying, heavily VC-funded startup niches. According to PitchBook, through the first quarter of 2023, vertical farming deals declined by 91% year-over-year.
