If you haven’t yet renewed your passport ahead of international summer travel, prepare to pay plenty to fix the problem. Wait times for passports have increased across the board in recent months. Standard processing times are 10 to 13 weeks, the State Department says. Expedited processing times are seven to nine weeks. Neither estimate includes mailing times, which officials say can tack on two weeks each way.

Most hotel guests know to keep their voices down at night and refrain from smoking in the room. But guests are struggling over proper etiquette when it comes to electric-vehicle charging. More Americans are buying and renting electric vehicles, and factoring charging stops into their travel plans. At many hotels, guests now expect EV chargers.
As National Parks Visits Surge, Booz Allen Benefits

Visitors driving into Montana’s Glacier National Park this summer must buy a vehicle pass on Recreation.gov. The pass is free, but visitors pay a $2 fee to book the reservation. Visitors might assume that, like entrance fees, the reservation charges help pay for improving trails around the park’s Running Eagle Falls or expanding the park’s volunteer program. But a chunk of the money ends up with consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.

  + stars: | 2023-03-10 | by ( Allison Pohle | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Amsterdam is redefining the role tourism will play in the city. Amsterdam has a message for tourists who want to party hard while visiting the city: Stay away. The Netherlands’ capital plans to launch a deterrence campaign later this month aimed at tourists who go wild during their visits. In addition to new ads, the city has proposed rules in its infamous Red Light District, such as a ban on smoking marijuana in the street, earlier weekend closing times for bars, clubs and sex-work establishments and reduced alcohol sales.

  + stars: | 2023-02-24 | by ( Allison Pohle | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The passport renewal system is backed up again, sending people who are planning spring trips overseas scrambling. The State Department’s website currently estimates five to seven weeks for expedited passport renewals and eight to 11 weeks for routine renewals. Earlier this month, the website said expedited passport renewals would take three to five weeks and routine renewals would take six to nine weeks. These processing times don’t include mailing times, which the department says can add several weeks.
Airbnb properties have a grading problem, hosts and guests say: Most U.S. rentals earn near the top rating of five stars. Hosts are facing more competition for bookings because Airbnb has added more properties for rent, and as a result hosts say their ratings matter more to set them apart. Some hosts are experiencing what they’ve named an “Airbnbust,” or a drop-off in bookings due to the jump in short-term rental properties.

Passengers and crew members alike are keeping an eye out for vapes while flying. Federal officials have highlighted risks about fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in cellphones, laptops and e-cigarettes in recent years. These incidents are rare for airlines. But the number of lithium-battery air incidents that involve smoke, fire and extreme heat because of vapes or e-cigarettes has tripled since 2019, according to a Federal Aviation Administration database.

President Biden said his administration is expanding its crackdown on what he calls “junk fees,” the ambiguous surcharges tacked onto concert tickets, cable bills, banking services, hotel bookings and other purchases. “We’re going to ban surprise resort fees that hotels charge on your bill,” Mr. Biden said in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. “Those fees can cost you up to $90 a night at hotels that aren’t even resorts.”
Travelers to some popular Mexican tourist destinations should be cautious when hailing rides from apps due to conflicts between taxi and Uber Technologies Inc. drivers, the U.S. government warned this week. On Monday, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a security advisory warning of disputes between drivers for ride-hailing apps and local taxi unions, which have in some cases turned violent. The alert is for the state of Quintana Roo, home to popular resort destinations including Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Tulum.
Mykonos in the winter? More travelers are opting to travel trans-Atlantic before summer. Europe is top of mind for U.S. travelers this year, and they are making trips well ahead of high season, travel advisers say. Normally, trans-Atlantic trips to Europe pick up as weather warms in spring and run through the summer months.
Airlines Are Bumping a Lot More Passengers Lately
  + stars: | 2023-01-19 | by ( Allison Pohle | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
More U.S. passengers are being bumped from their flights, reversing steady industrywide improvement and adding to the broader frustrations many have with airlines. The Wall Street Journal’s annual airline scorecard found that airlines have been bumping fliers more often than the previous year, and the comparable prepandemic period. This happens when more people are scheduled to fly than there are available seats.

Glacier National Park in Montana is making the biggest changes, increasing the types of reservations required to visit during peak visiting months. Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Arches National Park in Utah announced expanded windows for their reservation systems.
