RTX said on Monday it would have to pull 600 to 700 of its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines from Airbus A320neo jets for quality inspections over the next three years. The engine issue was first disclosed in July, but RTX made the extent of the problem clearer on Monday. The announcement caused waves up and down the industry, from component manufacturers like Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries to airline carriers like Germany's Lufthansa that rely on the popular Airbus jets. In July, RTX said microscopic contaminants were found in a powdered metal used in high-pressure turbine discs that are part of the GTF engine's core. RTX is one of two manufacturers of engines for the popular narrowbody Airbus A320neo, the other being CFM International, a joint venture between GE (GE.N) and Safran (SAF.PA).

REUTERS/Loren Elliott(Reuters) -Air New Zealand on Tuesday warned that inspections of RTX’s Pratt & Whitney engines would have a “significant” impact on its flight schedule from next year. “This issue will further reduce engine availability and is expected to have a significant impact on the airline’s schedule from January 2024,” Air New Zealand said in a statement. Air New Zealand has 16 A320neo jets in its fleet of 106 aircraft, servicing Australia and the Pacific Island markets and, to a much lesser extent, the domestic market. Major customers that took delivery of affected A320neo jets include Spirit Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Wizz Air, according to aviation data provider Cirium. Hungary’s Wizz Air, one of Europe’s largest lost-cost airlines, on Monday said its capacity could be reduced by 10% in the second half of 2024 as a result.

The issue also forced RTX to decrease its $9 billion free cash flow goal for 2025 to approximately $7.5 billion. The quality issue relates to a "rare condition" in powder metal used to manufacture engine parts, such as high pressure turbine disks and high-pressure compressor disks, that could result in micro-cracks and fatigue. Pratt & Whitney is also analyzing the impact of the quality issue on other engine models in its fleet, but that impact is expected to be far less, RTX said. The company expects to release a service bulletin in the next 60 days laying out an inspection protocol for high pressure turbine disks and compressor disks. It also plans to add maintenance capacity and increase part output to help mitigate the impact to GTF customers, RTX, said.

Airlines are scrambling to find spare parts due to an engine recall which threatens to cancel flights, the Financial Times first reported. JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Wizz Air are among the fleets which will be affected, and they've been updating investors on how they plan to deal with the disruption. 3M posted $7.99 billion in revenue, beating analysts' estimates of $7.87 billion, according to Refinitiv. Elsewhere, RTX reported second-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street expectations, posting $1.29 in adjusted earnings per share on $18.32 billion in revenue. SINGAPORE, May 17 (Reuters) - None of the Airbus (AIR.PA) A320neo planes in the Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) group with Pratt & Whitney engines are currently grounded over a lack of spares, Leslie Thng, CEO of Scoot, the airline's low-cost subsidiary, said on Wednesday. The engines have been under scrutiny since Go Airlines (India) Ltd filed for bankruptcy protection this month, blaming "faulty" Pratt engines for the grounding of about half its 54 Airbus A320neos. Scoot has 15 A320neo family planes in its fleet, while premium brand Singapore Airlines instead operates the rival Boeing Co (BA.N) 737 family. India's IndiGo (INGL.NS), Germany's Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) and Air New Zealand (AIR.NZ) have said some of their aircraft have been grounded over issues with Pratt GTF engines at a time when spares are in short supply. Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes said in February that the GTF engines' reliability has not been up to expectations and that the company was working to fix problems.

Plans for announcements on the anniversary of Tata's Air India takeover slipped as engine talks wore on. Analysts caution many obstacles remain to Air India's plans.

Air India and Boeing did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters reported last month that Air India was close to placing orders for around 500 jets from both Airbus and Boeing after months of intense talks on the core plane order. Air India, with its maharajah mascot, was once known for its lavishly decorated planes and stellar service but its reputation declined in the mid-2000s as financial troubles mounted.
