The move prompted Wall Street giants Barclays and Citi to adopt a more optimistic stance on global cyclical stocks. Barclays believes the Federal Reserve's actions are "clearly designed to pull out all the stops to achieve a soft landing" for the economy. Barclays strategists noted that "cyclicals typically rebounded steadily after the Fed started its rate cut cycle ... as long as it was not followed by a recession." Citi strategists share a similar outlook for European stocks. "The scale of the downgrades has become so extreme of late that we're now approaching a point where negative ERI may be a useful contrarian indicator," the Citi strategists said.

Cfoto | Future Publishing | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China's slowing economy needs more than interest rate cuts to boost growth, analysts said. He expects Beijing will likely ramp up fiscal stimulus due to weak growth, despite reluctance so far. "The market is forming a medium to long-term expectation on the U.S. growth rate, the inflation rate. As for Chinese government bonds, Ding said the firm has a "neutral" view and expects the Chinese yields to remain relatively low. He pointed out that monetary easing still requires fiscal stimulus "to achieve the effect of expanding credit and transmitting money to the real economy."

Analysts are warning that Coinbase could be entering a down trend after the stock scored a six-day-long advance. In early trading Wednesday, Coinbase rose as much as 1.3%, paving the way for what may be its seventh straight gain. "Coinbase looks very toppy to me as the recent bounce out of the oversold condition looks to be stalling out," Wolfe Research macro strategist Rob Ginsberg told CNBC. Lau also cited muted trading volume on crypto exchanges and pressure on subscription and services revenue due to the declining interest rate outlook. But cryptocurrency "trading volume could jump" when interest rates move even lower and if bitcoin again challenges its all-time high, Lau noted.

(CNN) – One person is dead after a gunman hijacked a Los Angeles city bus overnight, leading police in pursuit around the city for more than an hour before the suspect was taken into custody. A person was found in the bus early Wednesday with gunshot wounds, then taken to a hospital, where they died, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Donald Graham said. The bus driver and a passenger were rescued from the bus after police eventually stopped it with spike strips before a SWAT team moved in for the rescue, he said. Police did not immediately have information about the suspect’s motive, and the investigation continues. The bus driver “is in relatively good spirits, though a bit shaken up,” Graham said.

Read previewThe FAA has opened an investigation after two passengers were injured when a United Airlines plane responded to an alert from a midair collision system. AdvertisementThe FAA said in a statement that the flight responded to an onboard alert about another aircraft in the vicinity. The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) helps prevent midair collisions by monitoring the surrounding airspace and alerting pilots about nearby aircraft. The system sounds an alarm in the cockpit, and the pilots notify the air traffic controller that they are responding to a TCAS alarm, Kevin Karpé, a former air traffic controller and air traffic manager, previously told Business Insider. However, last year, concerns rose about a spike in the number of collision close calls taking place in the US.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun testifies before a subcommittee of the Senate Energy and National Resources Committee on the company's safety culture, following a number of recent incidents on Boeing airplanes, Washington, DC, June 18, 2024. A U.S. Senate panel investigating Boeing 's safety culture on Wednesday faulted the planemaker's quality practices and oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration citing documents obtained in an ongoing investigation. The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which is holding a hearing Wednesday with FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker, said Boeing workers continue to feel pressure to prioritize speed of production over quality. Boeing said it has "taken important steps to foster a safety culture that empowers and encourages all employees to share their voice, but it will require continuous focus." The FAA did not comment but Whitaker said at a House hearing Tuesday that Boeing needed to undertake significant safety culture improvements that might not be completed for years.

Eventually, she was moved to another seat, the video showed. However, Cathay Pacific said in its statement that onboard staff had issued two "serious" verbal warnings to the two disruptive passengers.

But that information was not relayed to key Secret Service personnel who were interviewed by Senate investigators. The Senate report comes just days after the Secret Service released a five-page document summarizing the key conclusions of a yet-to-be-finalized Secret Service report on what went wrong, and ahead of a Thursday hearing that will be held by a bipartisan House task force investigating the shooting. "This was the result of multiple human failures of the Secret Service," said Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the top Republican on the panel. Investigators found that many of the people in charge denied that they had responsibility for planning or security failures, and deflected blame. Democrats and Republicans have disagreed on whether to give the Secret Service more money in the wake of its failures.

Gold, traditionally perceived as a haven, has climbed roughly 30% this year, outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 index’s 20% gain. Fresh consumer confidence data on Tuesday indicated that Americans are feeling pessimistic about the US economy and future of the job market. JPMorgan Chase researchers said in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue running toward their 2025 target price of $2,850 an ounce as the Fed brings down rates. Silver, another precious metal that tends to move in tandem with gold, has jumped roughly 34% this year, outperforming the yellow metal. New moves from China to revive its economy also has the potential to lift precious metals, said Rhind.

Engineer Don Kramer is slated to testify as the investigation continues into the implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible. The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards (300 meters) off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began.

Gold bars sit in a vault at the Perth Mint Refinery, operated by Gold Corp, in Perth, Australia, on August 9, 2018. Gold hit a record high on Wednesday, boosted by a softer U.S. dollar and hopes of more interest rate cuts, while investors looked for new signals for the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory. Spot gold was steady at $2,658.08 per ounce, as of 0557 GMT, after hitting an all-time high of $2,670.43 earlier. On Tuesday, China announced a slew of support measures including outsized rate cuts, after the U.S. Fed cut rates by 50 basis points last week. Inflows to gold exchange-traded funds, particularly from Western investors, will rise in the coming months, providing further support for record-high bullion prices, analysts said.

Google filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission Wednesday accusing Microsoft of using unfair licensing contracts to stifle competition in the multibillion-dollar cloud computing industry. At the heart of Google's complaint is the allegation that Microsoft uses unfair licensing terms to "lock in" clients and exert control over the cloud market. Referring to the CISPE settlement, Microsoft said in a statement Wednesday that it expects the European Commission to dismiss Google's complaint. "Microsoft settled amicably similar concerns raised by European cloud providers, even after Google hoped they would keep litigating," a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC via email. "Having failed to persuade European companies, we expect Google similarly will fail to persuade the European Commission."
