The former basketball player, who spent seven years in the NBA with four different teams, now finds himself in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, competing at the Olympics in a different sport entirely. Budinger is a professional beach volleyball player these days, and alongside Team USA partner Miles Evans, is hoping for a deep run at the Games in Paris. Drafted by the Detroit Piston in 2009, he went on to play more than 400 NBA games with Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, and Phoenix Suns. A brief stint in Spain followed, after which Budinger decided to leave basketball and return to beach volleyball, making his professional debut in 2018. But he also draws on his experience of playing in the NBA when he’s out on the beach volleyball court, particularly when it comes to dealing with pressure.

Why have many Democrats embraced Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee, despite not knowing much about what she believes? We spoke to 14 Democrats as part of our latest Times Opinion focus group, and the answer was clear: Most had been deeply anxious about President Biden, and once he bowed out of the race, they needed a nominee fast. Some of the more liberal or younger participants in the group wondered if Harris is too harsh on criminal justice or on migrants crossing the border. Others don’t know what she would do about the economy — a top concern of theirs — or much else about her. For all that, most of our 14 participants felt more hopeful about Harris than Biden, whose age and inarticulateness left some thinking they would not vote this year.

Families for some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a U.S. judge should reject the planemaker's proposed plea deal with the Justice Department and the government should seek a much higher fine. Spokespeople for Boeing and the Justice Department did not immediately comment on the families' filings. The DOJ told Boeing earlier this month it could accept a settlement that branded the planemaker a felon or fight the charge in court. The Justice Department has a separate criminal probe ongoing into the Alaska Airlines jet that was missing four key bolts. The company's board -- including new CEO -- must meet with the victims' families within four months of sentencing.

Every year, nearly 10,000 electricians either retire or change careers, but only about 7,000 new ones enter the field. "We're benefitting from a generation that's looking past high school and is not seeing a career going through the traditional four-year college pathway. Contributing to that shift are high school guidance counselors like Steve Schneider, who has advised students for 28 years, currently at Sheboygan South High School in Wisconsin. It offers high school students hands-on training alongside workers from local companies, introducing them to skilled trades and other occupations, which can lead to an apprenticeship after graduation. Among LATTC's 12,000 students, 4,600 are currently enrolled in electrician training, he said, adding that tuition is around $1,000 a year.

Misinformation spread rapidly through Pennsylvania during the 2020 election as the swing state faced baseless allegations about voting in Pennsylvania, perceived unfairness toward Republican poll-watchers and violations of election rules. Sabir said the misinformation fighting efforts will target voters where they are, including social media, billboards and radio ads. Fontes was recognized in May for his office’s work creating election security tabletop training exercises aimed to protect the state’s election infrastructure. Bellamy said it’s critical to fight misinformation going into this election, and elections are gaining a lot of negative attention.

While President Biden enjoys strong support from Black voters, Donald Trump has chipped away at that crucial Democratic base: He won 12 percent of Black voters in the 2020 election and did especially well with Black men, winning 19 percent. Some pollsters think Mr. Trump may do even better in November. This focus group was held last week, before the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump. But they also said that some of their friends and relatives sharply disagreed with them about Mr. Trump. For these men, Mr. Trump is not just the more appealing choice but also the sole realistic option, given “how off track the president is mentally,” as one participant said.

Add to that the moderation in the consumer price index , the producer price index and the personal consumption expenditures price index – the Fed's preferred inflation gauge – and the need to wait for further signs of improvement seems like overkill. Also, if the Fed dials back policy later – rather than sooner – there will be claims of political interference if it cut rates immediately before the presidential election. The central bank has been dealing with an economy-crashing pandemic, a surge in prices and uncertainty over how its policies would affect the broad economy, inflation and consumer behavior over time. This is a factor that will likely drive inflation rates lower.
