BEIJING, April 21 (Reuters) - China's overall exports to North Korea in March rose sharply compared with the same month last year for the second month in a row, with the major export items including rice, Chinese customs data showed on Friday. Chinese outbound shipments to the isolated country surged 141.7% year-on-year last month following a 161.5% leap in January-February, data released by China's General Administration of Customs showed. The country also imported around $8 million in artificial wigs and $7 million in tobacco. China's foreign ministry said last month that relations between China and North Korea had entered "a new historic period" in recent years and continued to develop under the "strategic leadership" of both countries. China's new ambassador to North Korea, Wang Yajun, arrived in the North on March 27.
BEIJING, April 13 (Reuters) - China's exports unexpectedly surged in March, with officials flagging rising demand for electric vehicles, but analysts cautioned the improvement partly reflects suppliers catching up with unfulfilled orders after last year's COVID-19 disruptions. Exports in March shot up 14.8% from a year ago, snapping five straight months of declines and stunning economists who predicted a 7.0% fall in a Reuters poll. "Sluggish external demand and geopolitical factors will bring greater challenges to China's trade development," he added. Factory surveys showed export orders falling in March, a contrast to more upbeat readings for the services sector, which has benefited from China's reopening. BEIJING, April 13 (Reuters) - China's exports unexpectedly surged for March, driven by strong shipments of solar products, new-energy vehicles and lithium batteries and as supply chain conditions continued to improve from their COVID paralysis. This came as a surprise to the market," said Zhiwei Zhang, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management. Lv Daliang, spokesperson of the General Administration of Customs, attributed the upside surprise to strength in demand for electric vehicles, solar products and lithium batteries. "Sluggish external demand and geopolitical factors will bring greater challenges to China's trade development," he added. Crude imports in March totalled 52.3 million tonnes, or 12.3 million barrels per day (bpd), according to data from the General Administration of Customs. Analysts pointed to a sharp increase in refined fuel product exports as a key reason behind the jump in crude imports. Total crude imports for the first quarter stood at 136.6 million tonnes, a 6.7% increase over 127.9 million tonnes in the same period last year. China imported 8.9 million tonnes of natural gas in March, up 11.2% from 8.0 million tonnes a year ago. Total natural gas imports for the first quarter stood at 26.7 million tonnes, down 3.6% on last year.
LONDON, March 31 (Reuters) - China’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports fell sharply in 2022 because of the disruption caused by lockdowns to control the coronavirus epidemic and the massive exit wave of infections when they were lifted. But the import rebound could be smaller than some analysts anticipate because domestic gas production is rising strongly and the country has mostly completed its transition to natural gas for urban residents. Both LNG and pipeline imports remained subdued in the first two months of this year with any rebound delayed until later in 2023. China’s LNG purchasers have proved price-sensitive and will likely wait for prices to decline before increasing imports and refilling storage. PIPELINES NOT LNGThe shift from LPG and especially gasworks gas has turbocharged consumption of natural gas over the last decade.
REUTERS/StringerLONDON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - China’s exports of refined petroleum products, especially diesel, surged in the final two months of 2022, relieving some of the global shortage caused by unusually low exports since the middle of 2021. China’s exports were below normal for 16 months from July 2021 through October 2022 with a cumulative shortfall relative to the previous trend of 21 million tonnes or 167 million barrels. The downturn was concentrated in diesel with a cumulative shortfall of around 17 million tonnes or 128 million barrels (“Monthly bulletin”, GAC, January 18). Diesel exports accelerated to a near-record 2.8 million tonnes in December, from just 1.1 million tonnes in October, narrowing the deficit since mid-2021 to less than 16 million tonnes or 117 million barrels. SINGAPORE, Jan 20 (Reuters) - China's coal imports from Russia dropped in December as logistics issues and inclement winter in Russia curbed shipments and Chinese demand weakened amid surging COVID infections. Some 6.89 million tonnes of Russian coal reached China last month, down from 7.16 million tonnes in November, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Friday. Arrivals of Indonesian coal were 17.53 million tonnes last month, down from 20.04 million tonnes in November. During the January-December period, China's imports totalled 170.71 million tonnes, down 12.6% from 2021. The customs data on Friday showed no coal imports from Australia in December.
China, which refused to condemn the attack, cranked up procurement of Russian barrels and has largely ignored the sanctions imposed by Western nations on seaborne Russian crude from Dec. 5. In December, it brought in 6.47 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia, or 1.52 million bpd, compared to 1.7 million bpd in the same period in 2021. Saudi Arabia shipped a total of 87.49 million tonnes of crude to China in 2022, equivalent to 1.75 million bpd, customs data showed, on par with the level in 2021. No Venezuelan crude imports were recorded by Chinese customs throughout 2022 and a total of 780,392 tonnes of crude oil from Iran arrived in China. BEIJING, Jan 13 (Reuters) - China's exports and imports with Russia hit a new high of 1.28 trillion yuan in 2022, Lyu Daliang, spokesperson of the General Administration of Customs, told a news briefing in Beijing on Friday. Trade with Russia accounted for 3% of China's total for the year, he added. With the government focused on reviving economic growth this year after dropping its tough COVID control measures, some analysts are expecting China's crude oil imports to rebound strongly in 2023. Friday's data also showed fuel exports - including gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and marine fuel oil - reached 7.7 million tonnes in December, the highest since April 2020 and up from 6.14 million tonnes in November. Annual fuel exports, however, remained 11% below 2021 at 53.69 million tonnes, due to steep reductions in overseas shipments earlier in 2022 as the government sought then to curb excessive domestic processing. Natural gas imports last month via pipelines and as liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached 10.28 million tonnes, down 12% on the year. Annual imports fell 9.9% at 109.25 million tonnes, data showed.
But plunging shipments in December suggest exports are likely to struggle in early 2023 as the global economy weakens. That translates into a trade surplus of $877.6 billion, surpassing 2021’s record of $676 billion. However, “with growth outside of China still slowing, exports may continue to contract until the middle of the year,” they said. Russia tiesChina also announced Friday its trade with Russia hit a new record high in 2022. In November, Russia surpassed Saudi Arabia to become China’s top crude oil supplier, according to customs data released last month.
China's trade with Russia hit a record $190 billion in 2022, a sign Moscow is deepening its partnership with Beijing. Trade with Russia made up 3% of China's total trade volume last year, per a Reuters report. Trade with Russia also made up 3% of China's total trade volume last year, per a Reuters report. A Reuters analysis of industry data found that Russian rail exports of liquefied petroleum gas to China more than doubled in 2022, and Russian oil exports rose 10% in the first 11 months of 2022. That's largely the result of Russia leaning more on China as its trade volume gets battered by Western sanctions.

REUTERS/Aly SongDec 28 (Reuters) - China will drop a requirement for inbound travellers to take COVID-19 PCR tests starting from Jan 8, 2023, customs authorities said on Wednesday. PCR checks for imported chilled and frozen foods will also be dropped, China's General Administration of Customs said. China's management of COVID-19 is set to be downgraded to the less strict Category B from the top-level Category A from Jan. 8, the health authority said on Monday. The latest November output number showed a ninth consecutive increase to 3.41 million tonnes. For the first 11 months of the year, the world’s top aluminium maker produced 36.77 million tonnes, up 3.9% from the corresponding period in 2021. Total imports in the first 11 months were 2.13 million tonnes, down 28.2% from the corresponding period last year. Imports of bauxite, the main source of aluminium ore, came in at 11.79 million tonnes last month. That was up 31.3% from October’s 8.98 million tonnes and up 53.6% from 7.7 million in November last year.
The European Union also introduced an embargo on Russian coal imports starting from Aug. 10 as part of the Ukraine-related sanctions. Arrivals of Russian coal stood at 6.43 million tonnes in October, down from 6.95 million tonnes in September and a record 8.54 million tonnes in August, the General Administration of Customs said. Russian coal export constraints could prove even more painful for China as fuel demand in the power generation and heating sectors picks up in winter. Russia's key coal producing region of Kuzbass in Western Siberia will likely miss its coal export target this year and next over persistent logistic bottlenecks, the local governor Sergei Tsivilyov said last month. For next year, the plan stands at 63 million tonnes, while Tsivilyov said the railways had offered to transport 52.5 million tonnes.
LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - China’s diesel exports accelerated significantly in September after being severely restricted over the previous 13 months, according to data from the customs service. Faster exports will provide some relief amid a global diesel shortage, but are unlikely to be enough to stabilise and rebuild global inventories, or offset any future disruption as a result of sanctions on Russia’s fuel exports. Diesel exports were reduced by a total of 16.3 million tonnes, or 122 million barrels, over 13 months compared with the pre-June 2021 trend. Recently, extra quotas have been awarded, which should help relieve some of the global shortage, provided they are maintained at a higher level. Extra diesel shipments out of China will help, but rebalancing the diesel market still requires slower growth in the global economy and fuel consumption.
China’s Exports Drop Sharply as Global Economy Slows

SINGAPORE—China’s exports to the rest of the world shrank unexpectedly in October, a big sign that global trade is in sharp retreat as consumers and businesses cut back spending in response to central banks’ aggressive moves to tame inflation. Exports from China declined 0.3% last month compared with a year earlier, China’s General Administration of Customs said Monday, the weakest pace of growth since May 2020, when trade was hobbled by countries’ early efforts to contain a worsening global pandemic. That was well below the expectations of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal, who had expected exports to increase 4% year over year.
SINGAPORE, Nov 7 (Reuters) - China's coal imports slipped in October after hitting a 10-month high in September, as Beijing's ultra-strict COVID-19 restrictions dampened demand for the power generation fuel. Coal arrivals in October totalled 29.18 million tonnes, up 8.3% from a year earlier, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Monday. Coal imports hit 33.05 million tonnes in the prior month. Coal-fired power and heating plants typically start to build inventory in October. But a stronger dollar is making imported coal more expensive for Chinese buyers and eating into profit margins at power plants.
The approvals could reshape global trade flows and result in fewer sales for farmers in the United States, the world's top corn supplier. China relied on the United States and Ukraine for most of its corn supplies but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has disrupted exports. He said in an interview the list of approved Brazilian facilities that can export corn to China may be updated to include more units in coming weeks. Once China starts buying corn from Brazil, traditional Brazilian corn importers such as Spain and Egypt could shift some of their purchases to the United States. Beijing and Brasilia had signed a protocol for exporting corn from Brazil to China in 2014 but little trade had happened due to complex inspection requirements.
REUTERS/Jason LeeExports of diesel fuel last month more than doubled from a year earlier to 1.73 million tonnes, the highest monthly rate since July 2021, according to data from the General Administration of Customs. Exports of aviation fuel, including refuelling at Chinese airports for airlines plying international routes, jumped by 38.6% from a year earlier to 1.23 million tonnes last month. China had maintained broad curbs on fuel exports this year, resulting in total fuel exports in the first nine months of 2022 falling 28% from a year earlier. But in an about-turn in fuel trade policy, Beijing in late September released an additional large batch of 15 million tonnes of export quotas, including 13.25 million tonnes for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, with the remainder for marine fuel. Table below shows trade details, volumes in million tonnes.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterImports from top supplier Saudi Arabia reached 7.53 million tonnes, or 1.83 million bpd, versus August's 1.99 million bpd and were 5.4% lower than a year earlier. Russian volumes rose nearly 9% to 64.26 million tonnes, a close second. That surpassed the previous record set in August of 3.37 million tonnes. China also received about 795,000 tonnes of U.S. crude oil in September, after zero imports in August.
REUTERS/StringerSINGAPORE, Oct 24 (Reuters) - China's crude oil imports in September were 2% below their level a year earlier, data showed on Monday, as independent refiners curbed throughput amid thin margins and lacklustre demand. The world's largest crude importer brought in 40.24 million tonnes of crude oil last month, equivalent to about 9.79 million barrels per day (bpd). While state refineries have mostly returned from outages and planned maintenance, independent refiners, which make up about one-fifth of China's crude oil imports, have continued to hold down production. However, the data showed that exports last month of refined fuel - including diesel, gasoline, aviation fuel and marine fuel oil - soared 36% from a year earlier to 5.64 million tonnes. Year-to-date exports were down 27.6% at 35.45 million tonnes, as a result of Beijing's policy adopted in late 2021 to limit fuel exports and excessive refinery processing.
China delays release of key economic data amid party congress

The highly unusual delay comes amid the week-long congress of the ruling Communist Party, a twice-a-decade event that is an especially sensitive time in China. He said the delay was unlikely to affect market sentiment as most preliminary economic data pointed to a pick-up in recovery in the third quarter. The delays followed the unexplained delay in the release of September's trade data by the General Administration of Customs, which had been due out on Friday. The trade data was not released on Monday and calls to the customs administration seeking comment went unanswered. At the last party congress, in 2017, third quarter GDP data was released as usual.
China delays release of economic indicators including Q3 GDP

REUTERS/Aly SongBEIJING, Oct 17 (Reuters) - China will delay the release of economic indicators originally scheduled for publication this week, including the country's third-quarter gross domestic product due on Tuesday, according to an updated calendar on the statistics bureau's website. The data for third-quarter GDP - originally scheduled for release at 10:00 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) on Tuesday - had been highly anticipated after the world's second-largest economy grew just 0.4% in the second quarter from a year earlier. The delays announced on Monday followed an unexplained move by the General Administration of Customs on Friday to skip its previously scheduled release of September's trade data. The trade statistics had been expected to show China's export growth weakened further from August, dragged down by soft global demand, while its imports remained tepid. The trade data was still not released on Monday and calls to the customs administration seeking comment went unanswered.
Arrivals of Russian coal last month reached 8.54 million tonnes, up from the previous peak of 7.42 million tonnes in July and 57% higher than in the same period last year, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Tuesday. Prices for Russian coal have climbed as both China and India stepped up buying, traders said, but were still cheaper than the domestic coal of same quality. They also increased purchases of higher quality thermal coal, such as Russian coal, to improve electricity generation efficiency. China brought in 15.82 million tonnes of the dirty fuel from its top supplier Indonesia in August, 35% higher from July, data showed. But that was still lower than the 17.3 million tonnes imported in August last year.
