REUTERS/Jeenah Moon/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Nearly three in four Jewish college students in the United States who responded to a survey said they have experienced or witnessed antisemitism during the current school year, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said on Wednesday. Some 73% of over 500 Jewish college students surveyed said they were exposed to antisemitism since the 2023-2024 school year started, the ADL, which fights antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, said. The survey also showed that the percentage of Jewish students who said they feel comfortable with others on campus knowing they are Jewish dropped to 38.6% since Oct. 7 from 63.7% before that date. For the data released on Wednesday, the ADL and Jewish outreach organization Hillel International surveyed more than 3,000 American college students, of which 527 were Jewish, from 689 campuses nationwide. The survey was conducted in two waves, one from July 26 to Aug. 30, and then from Nov. 6 to Nov. 10.

CNN —Elon Musk is trying to make amends, or at least do damage control, after endorsing an antisemitic post on his platform X, formerly Twitter. The backlash to Musk’s comments on X was swift: Advertisers pulled their campaigns from X, and Musk came under international criticism. Musk’s Israel tour was transparently transactional and frankly insulting. A chat with Musk and a personal tour of Hamas’ devastation seems like it could have waited. Earlier this year, the ADL published a report documenting an increase in antisemitic content on X under Musk’s ownership.

Hong Kong CNN —Elon Musk is expected to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday as he continues to battle a firestorm over his public endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory on his social media platform, X. Even before the latest tumult, X had faced criticism for the prevalence of antisemitic discourse on its platform. In September, Musk threatened to sue the ADL for defamation, claiming that the group’s reports have hurt advertising sales on X. X has hit back against similar claims from progressive media watchdog Media Matters, which in an analysis earlier this month also highlighted antisemitic and pro-Nazi content on X. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Sunday, Herzog spoke of the bittersweet moment seeing freed hostages reunited with their families.

(In response, Musk threatened a “thermonuclear” lawsuit, but as of this writing does not appear to have filed one.) Abhorrence of the Jewish state slips easily into abhorrence of Jews. On the right, though, there’s a mirror image of this slippage, with some defenders of the Jewish state willing to make excuses for antisemites so long as they champion Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has regularly embraced nationalist leaders who deploy antisemitic tropes, Donald Trump chief among them. It’s hard to figure out who is behaving more cynically, Musk or the Jewish leaders who are koshering him.

Leon Neal/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 18 (Reuters) - Elon Musk threatened on Saturday to sue media watchdog Media Matters and those who attacked his social media platform X, following moves by several large U.S. companies to halt advertising on the site after being promoted alongside antisemitic content. Liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America said earlier this week that it found ads from IBM, Apple and others were placed alongside content promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. "This week Media Matters for America posted a story that completely misrepresented the real experience on X, in another attempt to undermine freedom of speech and mislead advertisers," a statement posted by Musk said. He accused Media Matters of creating an alternative account designed to "misinform advertisers" about their posts. Hate speech, whether uttered by Musk or merely endorsed by him, is amplified when the world’s richest person posts or comments on it. “It’s doubtful that Musk harbors personal animosity toward Jewish people,” wrote the Atlantic’s Yair Rosenberg earlier this year, regarding another incident in which Musk trumpeted antisemitic statements. Mezrich in recent weeks has told several interviewers about how “Elon Musk broke Twitter, and Twitter broke Elon Musk.”It’s a punchy line, and in some ways I’m sure it’s accurate. There’s plenty of evidence that Musk broke Twitter — gutted it, rebranded it, tanked its revenue, and made it unrecognizable to its most active users. But Musk was at this long before, spreading countless conspiracy theories, particularly around the Covid pandemic.

CNN —Hate groups and far-right internet trolls have seized on the tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas war, while leveraging advances in artificial intelligence to further stoke antisemitism in the United States. “We’ve seen a real concerning ideological convergence between far-right communities online and pro-Hamas sentiment,” said Ben Decker, CEO of Memetica, a threat analysis company that monitors online hate. Karen Dunn, an attorney who sued the people responsible for the violence at the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, told CNN the hate groups “hate everybody, but they hate the Jews the most.”Antisemitism is a commonality that can unite multiple different and competing hate groups, which can then metastasize into hate directed at others, she said. Minadeo, the hate group’s leader, was sentenced this month to 30 days behind bars in Florida, after distributing the antisemitic fliers. Since the October 7 attack on Israel, hate groups also have attempted to latch onto the pro-Palestinian movement to push their own antisemitism-promoting agenda.
