Dan Stoenescu told Reuters the bloc and its member states have gathered more than 50 million euros to provide aid and back rescue missions and first aid in both government-held and rebel-controlled parts of Syria. "It is absolutely unfair to be accused of not providing aid, when actually we have constantly been doing exactly that for over a decade and we are doing so much more even during the earthquake crisis," Stoenescu said in written comments. The war carved the country into various competing zones of control, making aid provision difficult even before Monday's 7.8 magnitude quake. Stoenescu said the EU was encouraging member states to provide help and that sanctions "do not impede the delivery of humanitarian aid." "We call the authorities in Damascus not to politicise the humanitarian aid delivery, and to engage in good faith with all humanitarian partners and UN agencies to help people," he said.

FRANKFURT, Feb 8 (Reuters) - E.ON (EONGn.DE) on Wednesday said the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey has affected the supply area of local power grid operator Enerjisa Enerji (ENJSA.IS), in which the German group owns 40%, adding that repair work was currently underway. "The supply area of our Turkish joint venture Enerjisa is also affected," the spokesperson said, adding the company mourned the loss of four employees while others were wounded, some in a critical condition. Enerjisa, in which Sabanci Holding (SAHOL.IS) also owns 40%, has more than 10 million customers in 14 Turkish provinces, including Adana and the surrounding region, which are among the affected parts of Turkey. Around 2,500 transformers - key components of long-distance power transmission - are still out of operation and 380,000 people are without electricity in Enerjisa's supply region, the spokesperson said, adding this was already down from 1 million shortly after the earthquake. Repairwork has started, the spokesperson said, adding that technical teams from less affected regions were providing support.

The team, comprised of 82 members, brought 20 tonnes of medical and other rescue supplies and equipment, as well as four search-and-rescue dogs, according to CCTV. China has already committed to give a first tranche of 40 million yuan ($5.9 million) in emergency aid to Turkey. Mr. Hovey said Direct Relief plans to fly supplies to airports at Istanbul in northwestern Turkey and at Adana in southeastern Turkey, close to the disaster zone. Many U.S. charities without aid operations in Syria and Turkey are now planning relief efforts, said Kathy Fulton, executive director of American Logistics Aid Network, which coordinates aid efforts among logistics operators following disasters. Aid groups are mostly focused on getting relief to Turkey and Syria by plane. The Biden administration's top diplomat spoke to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu by phone following the earthquake that killed more than 2,700 people across a swathe of Turkey and northwest Syria. “It was so important for the secretary to speak to his foreign minister counterpart, Foreign Minister Cavusoglu, in the first instance to offer condolences and to make clear...that anything Turkey needed that we could provide, they should pick up the phone and let us know,” Price said. Blinken asked his senior staff on Monday morning to identify what funding might be available to help Turkey and NGOs working on the ground in Syria, Price said. The U.S. consulate in the southern Turkish city of Adana would also host others working on rescue efforts, Price added.
