Juan J. Escalante, 58, an international construction equipment salesman living in Miami, on his 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T, as told to A.J. In 1969, my father Jose’s best friend moved to Detroit to work for Chrysler. After six months, he called and said to my father, “Why don’t you come up here? So my father sold his 1968 Dodge Dart, quit his job, and we moved as a family to Michigan when I was 4. My father went to school and then got a gig with a Chrysler supplier in Michigan.
Elizabeth Weinberg , 40, a Los Angeles-based photographer, on her 1974 Volkswagen Thing, as told to A.J. I have a son, so I need a safe, reliable car. For years, I looked around for a Mercedes from the ’70s or ’80s, what they call million-mile cars. Then I came across the Thing; I saw a picture of one online. So, in 2020, I started looking.
Jan Hyde , 82, a retired real-estate investment banker and consultant, on his 1960 Chevrolet Corvette, as told to A.J. If I had to argue one reason why the Chevrolet Corvette exists on this planet, it would be racing. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, there was a wealthy Gulf Oil executive named Grady Davis who started a Corvette racing team around 1961. He had two noteworthy drivers: a Washington, D.C.-based racer named Dr. Dick Thompson (they called him “The Flying Dentist”) and a guy named Don Yenko , who owned a Chevrolet dealership outside my hometown called Yenko Chevrolet.
Joe Carter , 63, a real-estate investor living in Moreno Valley, Calif., on his 1970 Mercury Cougar convertible, as told to A.J. I was raised by a single mom in Hollywood, Calif. We were poor, and I used to go to the 49-cent theater to see rerun movies. That is where I first saw a Mercury Cougar, driven across the big screen by the actress Diana Rigg . It was love at first sight—the car, I mean, although Diana Rigg came in a close second. A song in the movie was, “We Have All the Time in the World.” The thing is, we don’t.
Soumaya Majout Bent , 35, who lives in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Santa Barbara, Calif., and is a student planning on opening a restaurant in Santa Barbara, on her 1977 Dodge custom van, as told to A.J. It was the week of my wedding, and my fiancé and I were driving in Chicago. We saw this van parked on a lawn with a “for sale” sign. I was always mentioning how I wanted a van to go road tripping. I yelled, “Stop the car!” When we approached the van, I noticed two other people looking at it.
Ryan Kerrigan , 50, a managing director of Kerrigan Advisors, an automotive retail transaction services firm, living in Incline Village, Nev., on his 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk, as told to A.J. The campus is next to South Bend, Ind. South Bend was caught in the past. It had these big, hulking factories that were defunct, and the most noteworthy was what remained of the massive Studebaker factory. That is what initiated my interest in the Studebaker story.
Terry Gale , 62, a retired restaurant and maintenance company owner living in Elizabeth, Colo., on his 1954 Nash Ambassador, as told to A.J. When I was growing up, my dad worked at a Nash car dealership in Price, Utah, where our family lived. In 1971, he traded in his car for a Nash Ambassador, paying an additional $50. He drove the car for a few years, then, one day, my sister-in-law was driving it and the oil pump went out. We had the car towed to our farm and it sat there for 18 years.
Ali Faile , 49, a healthcare executive living in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on his 1968 Ford Torino, as told to A.J. My parents, Bob and Jo Faile, got married in March of 1967, in Winnsboro, S.C. That fall, my father went to the Adams Motor Co. Ford dealership, where his father worked in the service department, and bought a Ford Torino. I have a picture of the original bill of sale, dated Oct. 3, 1967, with a cost of $3,038.50.
Dystany Spurlock , of Goldvein, Va., on her Buell National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock drag-racing motorcycle, as told to A.J. I have worked as an actor, a model and I drive a tractor trailer. One thing I have always wanted to do was race Pro Stock NHRA motorcycles, which is the top-ranked motorcycle drag-racing series in the world. I have been drag racing bikes for a long time at lower levels, and last year I was with a team and things were not going as planned. I learned through one of my sponsors about someone selling a Pro Stock team.
Richard Kaneshiro , 65, a retired dental equipment business owner living in San Pedro, Calif., on his Mustang G.T. 350 station wagon, as told to A.J. Of all the cars I have owned, the Mustang G.T. 350 station wagon draws the most attention. Is it a real Mustang?
John Paolo Canton , 40, head of communications at Polestar (an electric-vehicle brand recently launched by Volvo Cars), who lives in San Francisco, on his 1968 Porsche 912, as told to A.J. In 2005, I met a new friend named Pete at the Road America racetrack in Wisconsin. He had a Ducati dealership and was involved in racing, and I worked with racing motorcycles. On the day I met him, he had this Porsche 912 with him. He had restored the car and painted it a strawberry-red that was highly unusual, not just for a Porsche, but for any car.
Leslie Zemeckis , an actor, documentarian and author living in Montecito, Calif., on her 1954 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, as told to A.J. Years ago, I wrote a book and made a documentary about the history of burlesque, and I acquired a large collection of clothes from past burlesque stars. A friend of mine had an old Cadillac, and when I saw that car, I thought: “I get it.” It had that same vibe. This friend was the one who found my 1954 Cadillac at a dealership in Canada. I thought: This car is for me.
Jeff Meier, a 62-year-old automotive consultant living in Los Angeles, on his 1969 Lamborghini Miura S, as told to A.J. In 2000, I was visiting relatives in Oregon. My aunt told me about this guy who owned an old orange Lamborghini. My sister knew everyone in this little town, and she was able to find him. There was this long dirt road, and a shack that looked deserted.
Manny Athans , a retired peace officer living in North Las Vegas, Nev., on his 1973 AMC Gremlin X Levi’s edition, as told to A.J. I would go to car shows and see these kinds of cars everywhere. One day, I decided that I wanted to gravitate toward the unusual. I wanted to stand out. Having grown up a teenager in the 1970s, I remembered the Gremlin.
David Graves , 66, a retired oil-field services facility manager living outside Dallas, on his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, as told to A.J. In May of 1955, my father, Hugh, bought a new 1955 Chevrolet, and when I was born, this was the car in which I came home from the hospital. Something must have happened during that car ride, because I have been a fan of the 1955 Chevrolet ever since.
Rick Steiner , 65, a retired engineer living in Tucson, Ariz., on his 1955 Ford Thunderbird, as told to A.J. My grandmother was a World War II Gold Star wife. What that means is, she was the wife of a soldier killed while serving his country. My grandmother raised four children and put them all through college, through engineering school, law school, dental school and nursing school. When she finally got her last child through school, she bought this 1955 Thunderbird, which was a shock to everybody.
C. Daniel Smith , 67, a recently retired orthopedic surgeon living in St. Joseph, Mo., on his 2002 BMW Z8, as told to A.J. Orthopedic surgeons have quite a bit of time between cases, and sometimes, to take the edge off, we would talk in the surgeon’s lounge about anything but work. I have a good surgeon friend named Steve Long who is, like me, nuts about cars, and oftentimes we would talk about our favorites. One day, we happened on the BMW Z8.
Keith Tholin , 73, a retired medical device executive living in San Clemente, Calif., on his 1955 Chevrolet Corvette, as told to A.J. He would buy these old cars and he would teach my brother and I how to work on them. He taught us how to tune up the engines, how to paint a car. Over the years, while my brother and I were in school, he probably had five or six C1 [first generation, from 1953 to 1962] Corvettes. When my brother and I went to college in Illinois, my father was in San Francisco and a number of times my brother and I drove these Corvettes back and forth.
Stacie Depner , 46, a mechanical engineer and medical device product-development director living in Anaheim, Calif., on her 1930 Ford Model A hot rod, as told to A.J. When I was in my second year in college, I was living on University Avenue in Minneapolis and every weekend I would see old cars drive by. I found out that everyone was going to Porky’s, a famous drive-in, for cruise nights. I thought: “I wonder what other cool car events are going on around here?” That’s when I found out about Back to the 50’s, which is one of the biggest annual car shows in the country. I first went in 1996, and this was a eureka moment for me.
