Biden is making his pitch in a critical swing state that's part of the “blue wall” trio of states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — where he defeated Republican President Donald Trump in 2020. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A proposed high-speed passenger train between Las Vegas and Southern California got another boost on Tuesday with Biden administration approval to issue $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds for the $12 billion project. The announcement benefiting the Brightline West project followed a $3 billion U.S. Department of Transportation grant in December and government authorization in 2020 for the company to sell $1 billion in similar bonds. "We appreciate the confidence placed in us by DOT and are ready to get to work,” Brightline founder and Chairman Wes Edens said in a statement. The 218-mile (351-kilometer) Brightline West project aims to whisk passengers at 186 mph (300 kph) or more in electric trains on new tracks along the Interstate 15 corridor — cutting in half a four-hour freeway trip between Las Vegas and suburban San Bernardino County near Los Angeles. No date has been announced for work to start, but officials have said it might be operational by the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

New York CNN —More than a thousand images of child sexual abuse material were found in a massive public dataset used to train popular AI image-generating models, Stanford Internet Observatory researchers said in a study published earlier this week. The presence of these images in the training data may make it easier for AI models to create new and realistic AI-generated images of child abuse content, or “deepfake” images of children being exploited. The massive dataset that the Stanford researchers examined, known as LAION 5B, contains billions of images that have been scraped from the internet, including from social media and adult entertainment websites. Of the more than five billion images in the dataset, the Stanford researchers said they identified at least 1,008 instances of child sexual abuse material. “Stability AI models were trained on a filtered subset of that dataset.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is resuming construction on a Michigan electric vehicle battery plant that the company postponed two months ago during a strike by the United Auto Workers union. But the automaker says that due to slowing electric vehicle sales growth, it will scale back the factory size, cutting the number of planned jobs by about one third from 2,500 to 1,700. Ford put the plant, originally to cost $3.5b, on hold in late September as the union went on strike at targeted assembly plants run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis. Unlike the company's other battery plants that are joint ventures, the Marshall factory will be a fully owned Ford subsidiary staffed by Ford workers. But China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., or CATL, which is known for its lithium-iron-phosphate expertise, would supply technology, some equipment and workers.

There are several opportunities over the next month for investors to cash in on a long-standing trend by buying options, according to Goldman Sachs. "We find that call buying around analyst days has been a systematically profitable option buying strategy. The reason the strategy works is that there appears to be an upward bias to share price movement after analyst days that is not priced in to the options market, Goldman said. "Company managements take the opportunity of analyst days to review recent performance, layout strategic priorities, provide/update forward guidance, reveal long-term targets etc. Despite the significance of analyst days, we also observe that the options market tends to underprice volatility around analyst days," the note said.

Basketball icon Magic Johnson has been declared a billionaire by Forbes. Johnson recently revealed he passed on an early chance to buy Nike shares that could've netted him billions. AdvertisementAdvertisementForbes magazine has declared basketball star Magic Johnson a billionaire, decades after he lost out on a Nike deal that could have netted him $5 billion. The Nike deal would've seen Johnson paid $1 for every pair of trainers sold and 100,000 shares in company stock. Back then, Nike shares were worth around 18 cents each, while today they are valued at around $100, so a shares deal would've been hugely more profitable long term.

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.
