By Greta Rosen Fondahn(Reuters) - Some 160 people who applied for asylum at Finland's eastern border last year have since disappeared, amid a sudden surge of asylum seekers arriving via Russia, Finland's immigration authority said. Finland closed its eastern border with Russia late last year amidst a growing number of arrivals from countries including Syria and Somalia. Now 160 people are missing from reception centres, most with unknown whereabouts, Migri's Director of the Asylum Unit, Antti Lehtinen told Reuters. Earlier in January, Finland extended the closure of its border with Russia until Feb. 11, saying it was likely that the inflow of asylum seekers would restart if the border opened. "Smuggling activities have taken advantage of the border security disruptions on the eastern border," the coast guard said in a statement.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German defence export approvals to Israel so far this year have risen nearly tenfold from last year, with Berlin treating permit requests as a priority since Hamas militants attacked Israel last month, a German government source said on Wednesday. As of Nov. 2, the German government has approved the export of close to 303 million euros' ($323 million) worth of defence equipment to Israel. By comparison, 32 million euros' worth of defence exports were approved in all of 2022. The majority of individual export permits - 185 out of 218 - were granted after the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. "Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel, applications for the export of military equipment to Israel are being prioritised and approved by the federal government," said the source.

CNN —Archaeologists in Israel have discovered what they believe to be the remains of an Ancient Greek courtesan. Stiebel told CNN that he and his team believe the woman would have been among the first Greeks to arrive in the region. Liat Oz, the director of the excavation on behalf of the IAA, described the mirror found in the tomb alongside the remains. Researchers say the mirror is incredibly rare, with just 63 discovered in the Hellenistic world. Stiebel told CNN that the team are continuing with further research in order to “zoom in” on the finer details of the mirror.

Reuters —Qantas Airways said on Tuesday that long-serving CEO Alan Joyce would exit the company two months earlier than previously flagged as a reputational turbulence engulfs Australia’s flagship carrier. Joyce’s early retirement will see CEO Designate Vanessa Hudson, the first woman to lead the century-old airline, take charge on Wednesday. Chairman Richard Goyder said the executive transition came at a “challenging time” for the airline and its staff. Qantas had announced a raft of leadership changes in June in a bid to increase focus on key areas as the airline completes its post-pandemic recovery. Mutual fund investor Fidelity increased its valuation of Instacart shares by 10% from May to July. Instacart made waves last week as one of a handful of late-stage startups filing S-1s and announcing long-awaited plans to go public. That's a 10% bump up from the end of May, when Fidelity valued its shares at $40.95 each. Other late-stage startups are similarly enjoying a slight rebound in Fidelity valuations following months of brutal downgrading.
