New York CNN —United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain said Tuesday the union plans to hold strike authorization votes against Stellantis because the automaker is failing to live up to guarantees it made in the 2023 labor deal it reached with the union at the conclusion of a six-week strike. During the livestreamed speech, Fain said that the union would be “holding strike authorization votes at one or more Stellantis locals. It is possible, since only some locals will be holding strike authorization votes, that only some plants will be struck. Asked Monday about an unfair labor practice charge by the UAW, Stellantis said it had yet to see the complaint and couldn’t comment directly on it. “We will communicate our plans to the UAW at the appropriate time.”But Fain blasted that statement from Stellantis.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on Tuesday proposed a new rule forcing banks to keep detailed records for customers of fintech apps after the failure of tech firm Synapse resulted in thousands of Americans being locked out of their accounts. That's what happened in the Synapse collapse, which impacted more than 100,000 users of fintech apps including Yotta and Juno. Customers with funds in these "for benefit of" accounts have been unable to access their money since May. Keeping better records would allow the FDIC to quickly pay depositors in the event of a bank failure by helping to satisfy conditions needed for "pass-through insurance," FDIC officials said Tuesday in a briefing. While FDIC insurance doesn't get paid out in the event the fintech provider fails, like in the Synapse situation, enhanced records would help a bankruptcy court determine who is owed what, the officials added.

US military completes withdrawal from Niger
  + stars: | 2024-09-16 | by ( Haley Britzky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —The US military completed its withdrawal from Niger on Sunday, US Africa Command announced in a news release. The US had previously said that the withdrawal would be complete by September 15. The withdrawal comes months after Niger’s military government — which took power in a coup in 2023 — ended an agreement signed with the US that allowed military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in Niger. A Niger military spokesman said in March that the agreement “is not only profoundly unfair in its substance but it also does not meet the aspirations and interests of the Nigerien people.”The announcement was made just days after a US delegation visited Niger in March. Those concerns were only furthered when, weeks after Niger announced the end of its military agreement with the US, Russian forces were operating out of the same military base as US troops in the country.

What this Boeing strike is really all about
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Allison Morrow | Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —At the heart of the Boeing strike that began Friday is a story about what happens when penny-pinching executives lose the plot and it falls to workers to get everyone back on track. If Boeing were any other business — and not a too-big-fail half of a global duopoly — it almost certainly would have declared bankruptcy. Years of pent-up resentment over Boeing’s mismanagement, combined with pandemic-era inflation and a resurgent labor movement, made this strike inevitable. Ahead of the strike, Ortberg urged workers not to strike while acknowledging their anger over nearly two decades of past contracts that downsized their retirement and health care benefits. Almost exactly one year ago, the United Auto Workers union won historic guarantees from the Big Three automakers after a seven-week strike.

New York CNN —Union members at Boeing overwhelmingly rejected a proposed a four-year contract with the troubled aircraft manufacturer, authorizing the first strike at the company in 16 years, said the International Association of Machinist (IAM) union. It also increased job security for union members, because Boeing promised to build its next commercial jet, which has yet to be announced, at a unionized plant. But 95% of members of the IAM union voted against the deal. In a separate vote 96% voted to authorize a strike, easily clearing the two-thirds threshold needed to approve a walkout. Boeing has nearly 150,000 US employees, including the 33,000 IAM union members.

I grew up working class and learned good work ethic from my parents. The novelty of cap erasers and Airheads from the school store wore off fast, and money didn't have much luster. What 'good work ethic' means for your financesBecause it's in my DNA, I can't help but see a strong work ethic as a virtue. Among other benefits increases, the contract would increase union members’ pay by last least 25% over four years. Union members have launched a series of protests this week outside of Boeing plants and may ultimately reject the new contract union leaders negotiated with Boeing management. The deal will be officially approved if more than 50% of the members vote in favor of the tentative agreement. That would prevent a strike, no matter how many workers vote to strike. If just more than a third of members vote against a strike, then the contract takes effect, no matter the results of the ratification vote.

Boeing should be kicked out of the Dow

The United States is no longer primarily an industrial economy, and the changes in the index over the last 126 years reflect that evolution. Beyond that, there are two other major issues indicating that Boeing no longer belongs in the Dow. Trying to stay relevantBoeing obviously wasn’t an early component of the Dow — the index started seven years before the first plane flew at Kitty Hawk, and 20 years before Boeing was incorporated. In 2020, the Dow dropped ExxonMobil, then struggling with low oil prices during the pandemic, and added tech company Salesforce, then on a tear. Boeing declined to comment when asked about its membership in the Dow.

The plot to topple Putin

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. As I found in months of wide-ranging interviews, everyone aspiring to a new Russian revolution grasps the seemingly impossible odds of their bid to topple Putin. Most applicants live in Russia, Sokolov tells me, but submissions have come from as far away as Uruguay. State and local governments often lease or sell land to builders, including affordable housing developers, particularly in areas with high demand for homes. In a rare overlap of goals between the two campaigns, Harris and Trump have both proposed building housing on federal land. Some Republican lawmakers agree that more federal land should be used for homes. The Biden administration has proposed selling hundreds of acres of land in Nevada controlled by the Bureau of Land Management to local governments to build thousands of new homes. But repurposing federal land for new residential communities in Nevada would likely mean more sprawl, which comes with both environmental and economic concerns.

New York CNN —The arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France over the weekend has thrust the popular messaging service and its enigmatic founderinto the spotlight. Durov’s arrest comes as the app has faced growing scrutiny for its use by terrorist groups and far-right extremists. Telegram is an encrypted messaging service that was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother, Nikolai. And earlier this month, the messaging app began actively removing calls to violence from the platform following reports that the app was being used to organize far-right, anti-immigrant riots in the United Kingdom. In addition to running Telegram, Durov has become something of an online influencer, sharing images on Instagram of his world travels (and, often, shirtless photos).
