SYDNEY—Even after Australia won the rights to co-host this year’s Women’s World Cup, it was under no illusions about the sport’s place in the national pecking order. This is a country that worships cricket, and rugby, and also two other versions of rugby. Soccer falls somewhere behind that.

New York CNN —It’s easy to watch Lionel Messi play in the United States, but dressing like him is a bit more difficult. Fans hoping to purchase an authentic Inter Miami jersey featuring its newest star’s name will have to wait until mid-October (notably, that’s when the Major League Soccer season ends). Shortly after Messi announced his intention of coming to the US in June, online retailer Soccer.com said that it sold six months’ worth of generic Inter Miami jerseys in one day, and they’re still sold out. Messi maniaMessi’s first appearance with Inter Miami ended with him scoring the game-winning goal in extra time. His signing is also expected to be a boon for Apple’s nascent streaming package, MLS Season Pass.

Anson Dorrance knew he was a pioneer during his eight years as head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). Any understanding of how and why the USWNT is women’s soccer’s dominant force, a four-time Women’s World Cup winner and favorite to win the next edition currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, must start with Dorrance, the groundbreaker and the bricklayer. Five years later, the first Women’s World Cup was held in China – not that it was initially labelled a World Cup as world governing body FIFA worried it might not be a success. A third-placed finish followed at the 1995 Women’s World Cup, and then came the Atlanta Olympics a year later. The success of 1999 would lead to the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA).

SafeSport, an independent non-profit organisation, was formed in 2017 and directed by Congress to respond to and prevent abuse within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movement. The letter, which pointed to "deep flaws" in SafeSport's processes, was signed by current and former members of both the men's and women's national teams. Among the concerns outlined in the document were an appeals and arbitration process that players say can be "damaging and retraumatizing for victims of abuse." "U.S. Soccer wants to do the right thing and take proactive steps against suspected abusers," the players wrote. "Our federation has tools and resources to investigate reports of abuse, but SafeSport is preventing them from participating in any way."

Critics of transgender inclusion in women's sport say going through male puberty imbues athletes with a huge physical advantage that transition does not mitigate. The U.S. women's team, including Rapinoe, famously lost 5-2 to an under-15 FC Dallas boys team in an informal training match in 2017. In much of the world, trans people are just lucky to stay alive. LGBT advocates say the debate over transgender inclusion in women's sport has also made for an increasingly hostile environment for gender diverse people in North America. According to LGBT website Outsports, a record of at least 87 out players will compete at the World Cup, more than double the 38 who played in the 2019 version.

June 16 (Reuters) - Gregg Berhalter is poised to return as coach of the United States men's team, The Athletic reported on Friday, almost six months after U.S. Soccer let his contract expire amid a shakeup at the federation. The Athletic said the deal is "still being finalised" but that Berhalter's return was "imminent". Berhalter had made remarks criticising Reyna's commitment to the team at the World Cup, saying that he even considered sending him home. U.S. Soccer launched an investigation, which said in March that the incident would not prevent the body from rehiring Berhalter. Callaghan, who took over from Anthony Hudson when he stepped down as interim manager, has guided the United States to the final of the CONCACAF Nations League where they face Canada on Sunday.
