They call it an encirclement of their nation and say the United States is trying to constrain its main economic and military rival. The United States also has a new security agreement with Papua New Guinea. On Wednesday, Mr. Biden signed a $95-billion supplemental military aid and spending bill that Congress had just passed and that includes $8.1 billion to counter China in the region. In addition, the United States continues to send weapons and Green Beret trainers to Taiwan, a de facto independent island and the biggest flashpoint between the United States and China. A swarm of Chinese militia and Coast Guard vessels chased a Philippine Coast Guard ship in the South China Sea last year.

A jawbone found in a child’s rock collection in Arizona more than two decades ago belonged to a Marine who died in California in 1951 and was buried in Missouri, the authorities said on Friday. Everett Leland Yager, a U.S. Marine Corps captain, was 30 years old when his plane crashed during a military training exercise on July 31, 1951, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona said in a statement. Captain Yager’s remains were recovered in Riverside County, Calif., and he was buried in Palmyra, Mo. More than 50 years later, a mother, who was not named by the authorities, found what she believed to be human remains in her son’s old rock collection, the sheriff’s office said. Her son had been an avid rock collector as a child and had inherited the collection from his grandfather.

Marine insurance companies will be on the hook for much of the costs. These insurance companies are backed by insurance companies of their own – a type of business known as a reinsurer. The potential cost of insurance claims from the bridge collapse could be between $1 billion and $3 billion, analysts at Barclays wrote in a note Wednesday. “But other than that, the economic impact of what has happened will be enormous, but not recoverable from the ship,” Davies said. PHOENIX (AP) — Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego began airing the first television ads of his U.S. Senate campaign on Tuesday as the crucial Arizona race takes shape as a one-on-one contest after incumbent Kyrsten Sinema declined to run for a second term. The Arizona race is one of a handful of contests that will determine control of the Senate. In his ad, Gallego says he worked as a cook and a janitor growing up and got into Harvard University with no money or connections. Arizona has long been a Republican stronghold, but Sinema's 2018 election marked a period of ascendance for Democrats. ___Follow the AP's coverage of U.S. Rep. But amid the horrors are lessons, two US Army generals recently told Business Insider during an interview at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. Drones continue to be a dominant element of the war in Ukraine as both Ukraine and Russia ramp up production and development. Before drone warfare became as widespread and prevalent as it is in Ukraine today, troops had smaller ranges to worry about. And the range at which troops need to be able to suppress munitions and long-range capabilities has changed as well. Joshua KleinholzThe use of electronic warfare and sophisticated air defenses in Ukraine, too, has the Army rethinking what future wars could look like.

What Is Hezbollah, the Group Backing Hamas Against Israel?
  + stars: | 2024-02-15 | by ( Feb. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +7 min
Lebanon's Hezbollah has been trading fire with Israeli forces across the frontier since its Palestinian ally Hamas in Gaza and Israel went to war on Oct. 7. The exchanges are the deadliest since a 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel. Both Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel have said they do not seek all-out war, and the conflict has largely been contained to areas near the border. Hezbollah demonstrated its military advances in 2006 during a five-week war with Israel, which erupted after it crossed into Israel, kidnapping two soldiers and killing others. The Gaza conflict has rippled across the Middle East, where Hezbollah has inspired and supported other Iranian-backed groups.

Five U.S. Marines aboard a helicopter that went down during stormy weather in the mountains outside of San Diego are confirmed dead, the military said Thursday. Authorities say the CH-53E Super Stallion vanished late Tuesday night while returning to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego after training at Creech Air Force Base, northwest of Las Vegas. "It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and the "Flying Tigers," Maj. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte, commander of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, said in a statement. The craft was discovered Wednesday morning near the mountain community of Pine Valley, an hour's drive from San Diego. Civilian authorities searching on ground and by air located the aircraft, which went down during stormy weather in the Southern California mountains, about 45-miles (72-kilometers) from San Diego.

The incident came after a brawl in Times Square between police and a group of migrants generated waves of backlash against the city's asylum seekers. The Guardian Angels have been a fixture in New York since 1979 when Sliwa founded them to patrol the streets and subways during the city's high-crime days. The study found military personnel stationed at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune were at higher risk for some types of leukemia and lymphoma and cancers of the lung, breast, throat, esophagus and thyroid. Camp Lejeune was built in a sandy pine forest along the North Carolina coast in the early 1940s. People who got sick after being at Camp Lejeune also have criticized the federal government for being slow to investigate. Frank Bove, a senior epidemiologist, has led the agency's Camp Lejeune research for many years and was in charge of the latest study. A federal law signed by President Joe Biden in August 2022 included language to address concerns of people who developed certain health problems they believe were linked to Camp Lejeune water contamination.

The competitionTypically, a presidential campaign makes it as easy as possible for the public to learn what the candidate would do if elected. But a curious voter who visited Haley's campaign website would need to navigate through press clips and TV appearances to find one. CNBC reached out to Haley's campaign to ask why they do not have a comprehensive policy agenda on the campaign site. Japan, a key U.S. ally, had sought the suspension of all non-emergency V-22 Osprey flights over its territory after one fell into the sea on Wednesday in western Japan. Japan's Coast Guard has said one person was found and confirmed dead, and the search for the remaining seven aboard continues. The Pentagon said on Thursday that it was still flying Ospreys for now, and that it was not aware of any official request for their grounding. "We are concerned that despite our repeated requests, and in the absence of sufficient explanation (from the U.S. military), the Osprey continues to fly," he told a news conference. The Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF), which also operates Ospreys, has said it would suspend flights of the transport aircraft.
