As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. The FreeStyle Libre itself, which had 20% organic growth in the quarter, also still has plenty of runway for further growth. Investors should focus instead on the upward revision to management's full-year outlook for both top-line organic growth and earnings. The combination of Thursday's strong results and immediate decline in share price is setting up a positive risk vs. reward setup. Classic car aficionados recall their sleek, innovative designs, but the brands are also a reminder of another bygone era: the traditional defined benefit pension. Their pension plans were terminated, leaving thousands of workers without their expected benefits. That, along with other pension plan failures, prompted efforts to make retirement savings safer, culminating in federal legislation that has shaped much of the current retirement benefit landscape. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA, which was signed into law in 1974 by President Gerald R. Ford, marks its 50th anniversary this year. It also created the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, a federally sponsored insurance fund that backstops failing pension plans.

Volkswagen plans to invest up to $5 billion in electric vehicle startup Rivian , starting with an initial investment of $1 billion. The additional $4 billion is expected by 2026. Shares of Rivian soared roughly 40% during after-hours trading Tuesday – two days ahead of an investor event for Rivian, which has been under pressure from Wall Street due to its cash burn and significant losses. The Detroit automaker sold a majority of its Rivian shares by 2023 after walking back a plan to codevelop EVs with the company. Rivian reported $7.86 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments to end March, with more than $9 billion in total liquidity.

CNN —Ford is recalling more than 550,000 F-150 pickups in the United States because of an issue that can cause the transmission to suddenly and unexpectedly, at any speed, shift down to first gear. Before that happens, a malfunction indicator light in the truck’s gauge cluster may turn on Ford spokesperson Maria Buczkowski said in an email to CNN. To fix the problem, Ford dealers will update the trucks’ control module software at no cost to the owner. Ford will start mailing letters to owners of the trucks involved in a few days. A new software update to fix the 2014 trucks will be ready sometime in the next three months, Buczkowski said.

New York CNN —Retail software provider CDK Global says it will likely take several days for its software to be back online and operational, as the company grapples with a system outage that has paralyzed nearly 15,000 car dealerships across North America since Wednesday. The data provider’s software, which dealerships use to manage everything from scheduling to records, said Saturday it has begun restoring its software. Car manufacturer Ford told CNN it is working with dealers to set up alternative software systems and other workarounds. Several dealerships on the East Coast told CNN on Sunday they are manually filling out forms to process sales. One used car dealership told CNN it has been filing paperwork by hand and sending runners to the car registry with the paperwork.

Here are 9 stocks that can benefit from Fed interest rate cuts

Housing We see Stanley Black & Decker as a major beneficiary of Fed rate cuts due to its link to the housing market. On the one hand, lower rates mean a bank like Wells Fargo makes less money on the money it lends. Biotech Danaher should also see some benefit as lower rates lead to improved funding dynamics for biotech companies. Like in housing, monthly payments become far more manageable at lower rates, and therefore affordability and demand, stand to increase. Salesforce , which has also highlighted more measured deal activity, might not benefit as much from lower rates.

General Motors approved yet another stock buyback — adding to our frustration that portfolio name Ford has yet to embark on a repurchase program of its own. Abbott Laboratories announced Monday it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for two new continuous glucose monitoring systems, including one for people who don't have diabetes. A continuous glucose monitor, or a CGM, is a small sensor that pokes through the skin and tracks a person's glucose levels in real time. One of Abbott's new systems, Libre Rio, is for patients with Type 2 diabetes who do not take insulin. Oftentimes, users need a valid CGM prescription to participate in these programs, so Abbott's new over-the-counter offering could be more accessible for some consumers. Abbott competitor Dexcom , which also sells CGM systems, received FDA approval for its first-ever over-the-counter CGM in March.

Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.
