iPhone 15 demand dips in China, analysts say
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( Samantha Murphy Kelly | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Demand for Apple’s new iPhone 15 lineup is weaker in China than for last year’s models, according to analysts. Sales for the iPhone 15 are down 4.5% in China compared to iPhone 14 sales in the first two weeks after its launch, according to Counterpoint Research. Separately, Bloomberg reported on Monday financial firm Jefferies said iPhone 15 sales dropped by a double-digit percentage following strong customer demand for Huawei’s new Mate 60 smartphone line. That’s strong growth for Apple considering sales fell for the third consecutive quarter in August, ahead of the iPhone 15 launch. In September, the US government sought more information about the Mate 60 Pro’s 5G Kirin 9000s processor reportedly developed specifically for the manufacturer.

CNN —John Lansing, the president and chief executive of NPR who led the outlet through the Covid-19 pandemic after taking the helm in 2019, will retire by the end of the year. The move comes just months after the radio network announced a significant budget shortfall and layoffs. In February, Lansing announced via a memo that NPR would cut its staff by 10%, or around 100 employees, after having already cut $14 million in expenses, CNN previously reported. Lansing will remain in his post until the board of directors identifies his replacement to ensure a smooth transition, NPR announced in a statement. During Lansing’s time at the media organization, NPR was recognized with more than 90 journalism awards and strengthened partnerships via the NPR Network.

Colleges and universities across the country are scrambling to find legal means of maintaining the levels of diversity they would like to see. Though barred from actively using race as a factor, they will still “see” race in signifiers such as name, ZIP code and, perhaps most notable, what students say about themselves in their essays. “Nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration or otherwise,” he wrote. Brenzel is currently a trustee at Morehouse College, where he is helping its board work through how the ruling will affect admissions. These supplemental prompts represent a new kind of diversity essay question, replacing the old kind that relied on a previous Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action.

CNN —Variety is facing a blistering wave of backlash. “Siegel was informed by The Atlantic that the charges were completely false, but she nevertheless decided to smear Alberta. Jon Kelly, editor in chief of Puck, similarly defended his reporter, who was portrayed in the piece as a Zucker shill. Reached for comment, a Variety spokesperson notably offered a defense of the piece that contained far less fervor. The spokesperson simply said, “Variety stands by our investigative story about CNN written by one of the best journalists in the business.”

Murders, on the Decline

And with less confidence in the justice system, some Americans resort instead to violence to resolve conflicts. Between 2014 and 2016, murders also increased after widely publicized police killings of Black men in Ferguson, Mo. This year, Memphis is among a minority of big cities where murders have increased — and Memphis is also where officers were charged in the beating and killing of Tyre Nichols in January. Crime is an incredibly complicated topic, involving personal disputes, the economy, social services, the political system and more. A few decades, much less a couple of years, is typically too little time to explain a trend definitively.

The company showed a preview of a new “Harry Potter” studio tour in the Japanese capital on Wednesday, its first outside the United Kingdom. “We’ve kept it all,” Jeff Nagler, president of worldwide studio operations at Warner Bros., told CNN in an interview in Tokyo. Warner Bros. and CNN share the same parent company, Warner Bros. The films “provided a lot of the profits of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures over the last 25 years,” he told analysts in a November results presentation. “We are very fortunate to have a huge share of the most beloved and globally recognized storytelling IP in the world, including ‘Harry Potter,’” he said.
In early October, my family of three got dressed up in green and posed for our local family photographer. I’d planned to print the photo on 75 Christmas cards and send them to everyone we knew. The reality TV star famously edited her daughter into her Christmas card one year when the girl “refused” to participate in the photo shoot. I knew the people on my Christmas card list wouldn’t be cruel about my daughter’s stains. I’ll keep the edited photo on my computer, just in case she wants me to reprint another canvas and Christmas card for our photo book.
RALEIGH, N.C. — Police believe the shooting rampage that left five dead in North Carolina’s capital city last week began when the 15-year-old suspect shot his older brother, according to a report released Thursday. The report said the teen had traveled nearly 2 miles from where his brother was found shot and stabbed. The report said officers gave repeated commands for the suspect to surrender and special officers worked to figure out his exact location. Based on the teen’s estimated direction of travel, police believe James Thompson was shot first, the report said. Police believe the teen shot Marcille Lynn Gardner, who was found wounded in the driveway, then fired at Nicole Connors, 52, who lived in the house.
