CNN —Investigators are working to determine who is responsible for a massive fire over the weekend that has forced the indefinite closure of part of Los Angeles’ Interstate 10, as fire officials say the blaze was likely arson. Residents who are impacted have been urged to take public transit, work from home or plan for significant traffic delays. Investigators have sifted through the fire’s rubble in search of evidence and are working with Los Angeles firefighters to canvass the surrounding neighborhoods for potential witnesses and video footage, the fire marshal added. Firefighters responded to reports of the fire around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a storage yard scattered with pallets, trailers and vehicles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. About 100 columns beneath the bridge were impacted by fire and are being inspected, according to transportation department director Tony Tavares.

The majority recognized a difference between firearms for personal use and those the state law reserves for “trained professionals,” semiautomatic weapons, including the popular AR-15. Sullivan said it's likely that plaintiffs in one or more of the multiple cases consolidated in Friday's opinion would seek a U.S. Supreme Court review, where he predicted victory. At least eight other states and the District of Columbia have some sort of prohibition on semiautomatic weapons. The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the law on a 4-3 decision in August. And such semiautomatic weapons are the choice of many gun owners for sport shooting and hunting, they say.

The wrangling over the concertina wire is not the only legal battle between Texas and the Biden administration on the border. Drought-like conditions in the Midwest over the summer have created a growing water problem in the New Orleans area this fall. Water levels of the Mississippi River have dropped low enough to make the river less resistant to a mass of saltwater flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico. This circumstance, known as saltwater intrusion, is endangering the drinking water systems in and around the city, as well as smaller municipalities to the south. Many water treatment facilities cannot handle water with high salinity levels, which corrode pipes and cause metals in the pipes to leach into the water. He said he was requesting a federal emergency declaration, and Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans signed an emergency declaration for the city on Friday.

Hurricane Idalia intensified overnight and is now a Category 4 storm heading toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. The strongest part of the storm will be over Florida’s Big Bend, where the state’s long peninsula curves to meet its Panhandle. More than half of Florida’s western coastline is at risk of life-threatening storm surges, as rising ocean water floods towns. Tallahassee is preparing for outages that could last days, expecting its strongest storm in decades. That’s partly because of human-driven climate change, which appears to have contributed to record-breaking ocean temperatures off the Florida coast.

The Florida National Guard activated: More than 5,000 National Guard members were activated to help respond to the storm. Mr. DeSantis is in the midst of rebooting a presidential campaign. On Saturday, Mr. DeSantis frequently slowed down the pace of a parade in Londonderry, N.H., by stopping to shake hands with onlookers and pose for selfies. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a Republican who has clashed with Mr. Trump, said of Mr. DeSantis after the two governors met briefly at the parade. Mr. Trump appears to be skipping the debate, handing Mr. DeSantis an opportunity to take the spotlight. Less than a month after a deadlocked Iowa Supreme Court left a six-week abortion ban unenforceable, lawmakers were set return to the State Capitol on Tuesday morning to consider a nearly identical set of restrictions on the procedure. With large Republican majorities in both legislative chambers and a Republican governor who has decried “the inhumanity of abortion,” the new restrictions seemed very likely to pass. “I believe the pro-life movement is the most important human rights cause of our time,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said last week when she called the special session on abortion. The new limits would add Iowa to a list of conservative states, which includes Indiana, North Dakota and South Carolina, that have passed abortion restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court ended the national right to abortion last year.
