Lawmakers take to the House floor Tuesday to try to resolve their ongoing speaker standoff that has left the chamber without a leader for two weeks since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. House Republicans nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio for the post after their initial nominee bowed out of the race amid deep divisions within the conference. But the House Judiciary Committee chairman forged ahead anyway, as lawmakers grew impatient about the stalemate. Typically, some lawmakers pledge their vote in the first round as a good-faith show of support to their party’s speaker nominee. But it’s not clear that those votes will remain in place if the nominee does not prevail on an initial ballot.

Multiple airstrikes have been reported around the Rafah Crossing since the war started, including one on Tuesday. Located in Egypt’s north Sinai, the Rafah Crossing is the sole border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

Rep. Jim Jordan received his party’s nomination for speaker on Friday, becoming the second nominee after Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly abandoned his bid for the role a day earlier. The Ohio Republican fell more than 60 votes short of the threshold needed to become speaker in a test vote on Friday. Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, was known for years as an outspoken critic of leadership positioned squarely among the party’s right flank. Still, some moderates, along with Democrats, staunchly oppose a Jordan speakership, making a bipartisan path forward possible. Some have floated a bipartisan effort to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry, who has been serving as speaker pro tempore since McCarthy’s ouster, or even elect the North Carolina Republican as speaker.

CNN —Rep. Steve Scalise announced he was dropping out of the speaker’s race Thursday after House Republicans failed to coalesce behind him in the aftermath of Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster. And Republicans scheduled a second members-only conference meeting for Thursday evening. But the opposition to Scalise as the next speaker only grew Thursday, with roughly 20 Republicans publicly opposing him. Scalise needs a majority of the House to be elected speaker, meaning he can only afford to lose four votes. The deadlock is leading to intensifying frustration as the House GOP looks no closer to coalescing around a speaker candidate.

House Republicans are scheduled to meet behind closed doors Monday evening to try to regain control of their majority ahead of possible speaker votes this week. “House Republicans need to unite and show the country that we’re fighting for them,” Jordan said Sunday on Fox News. While the full House ultimately votes on the new speaker, the position usually falls to a person from the party with the House majority. The rules around the temporary speaker position have been untested before, though they appear to indicate the main power in the role is to ensure the election of a new speaker. But if House Republicans are unable to quickly agree on a speaker, McHenry could be in the position for some time.

The House speaker election is days away after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster that has left the chamber in need of a successor. Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. House Republicans are set to hold their own candidate forum behind closed doors on Tuesday before holding an internal election and chamber-wide vote in the following days. “No candidate for Speaker is likely to receive 96 percent of the Republican Conference vote required by this new precedent,” Rep. Tom McClintock of California said in a statement. But the California Republican made clear after the vote to boot him from the role that he wouldn’t run for speaker again.

Leaders dropped $6 billion in Ukraine aid from the temporary funding measure passed Saturday as they focused on passing it quickly, just hours before the government would have shut down. Supporters of Ukraine aid — including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who visited the Capitol to plead for the money in person just two weeks ago — say it’s essential that additional funding is included. He said he would address Ukraine aid soon. But any dealmaking is on hold as House Republicans try to find a new leader. Jordan has made clear his opposition to additional Ukraine aid and reiterated it Wednesday.

In a Thursday letter to Citibank, Jordan said Citi declined to voluntarily provide information to lawmakers and its lawyers indicated they would only comply with a subpoena. Lawmakers had requested information from seven banks: PNC, Citibank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, Truist and US Bank. It’s the latest dramatic turn in the long-running criminal investigation of Hunter Biden that’s impacted President Joe Biden’s White House and has been a priority of congressional Republicans. The closely watched court fight reflects how social media has become an informational battleground for major social issues. It has revealed the messy challenges for social media companies as they try to manage the massive amounts of information on their platforms. “For example, if there were a natural disaster, and there were untrue statements circulating on social media that were damaging to the public interest, the government would be powerless under the injunction to discourage social media companies from further disseminating those incorrect statements,” said Daniel Tenny, a Justice Department lawyer. Were social media platforms pressured? One of the most prolific thieves in the South Lake Tahoe, Calif., area was “safely immobilized” by tranquilizer dart and apprehended Friday morning, according to state officials: a 400-pound black bear that the public had come to know as Hank the Tank. The captured bear was responsible for at least 21 DNA-confirmed home break-ins and extensive property damage in Tahoe Keys dating back to early 2022, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a news release. Based on visual observations made by residents during a string of rummaging and ransacking incidents dating back to 2021, the public initially thought “Hank the Tank” was one male bear. “I guess they all technically are ‘Hank the Tank,’” Jordan Traverso, a spokeswoman for the department, said. She said the “other Hanks” have not “presented themselves as problems” this year in Tahoe Keys, a gated community about 190 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Jordan, who sits atop the powerful House Judiciary Committee, has embarked on a fishing expedition at Facebook, demanding Zuckerberg turn over reams of internal documents that pertain to Meta’s content moderation decisions. In effect, Jordan is coercing Zuckerberg into turning over documents that will then be used to mendaciously smear the Meta chief’s company. Meta, for its part, had previously said it had already turned over thousands of pages of documents and was cooperating with the committee. Most news organizations gave Jordan’s “Facebook Files” entry little attention on Thursday.
