Silicon Valley is bracing for what it fears will be an "extinction event" threatening the survival of hundreds of startups. Tom Loverro, a investor at 40-year-old Bay Area venture capital firm IVP, has been loudly warning for months on Twitter and in media interviews about a coming "mass extinction event" for startups. The total volume of venture capital investment into US startups has slumped for six consecutive quarters, according to data firm Pitchbook. Even a last-ditch slashing of the startup's prospective valuation — a "down-round," in Silicon Valley parlance — didn't whet investors' appetites. Over the past year, many startups that rely on Silicon Valley funding have been steeling themselves for the slowdown to avoid similar fates.

He said he didn't have the self-discipline for remote work and likes being around people. He found during those couple of weeks that something that makes remote work appealing to many — the ability to structure time away from the eyes of coworkers — didn't really work for him. Remote work is "just not for me," he said. For many people, remote work has allowed them to flex their autonomy over their working conditions and lives. But for Bond, who worried about self-discipline and a lack of separation between home and work, working in person became his ideal.
President Biden on MSNBC called Speaker McCarthy an "honest man" but said he was constrained by the GOP. "He has to agree to things that maybe he believes but are just extreme," Biden told Stephanie Ruhle. Biden and McCarthy are in the midst of a protracted stalemate over the country's debt limit. Biden and House Republicans are now in a stalemate over the debt limit. However, House Republicans are insistent that Biden work with them to identify substantive cuts, and have so far said they would not back a clean bill.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer pushed back on House Republicans' debt ceiling legislation. Democrats have pointed to the potential economic negative impact that the GOP's plan could have, even if it prevents a technical debt default. But more back and forth over how to raise the debt ceiling means the country is steadily creeping towards an unprecedented economic catastrophe. "As Democrats have been saying for months, the real solution is bipartisan support for a clean bill to increase the debt limit and avoid default," Schumer wrote. "Speaker McCarthy and the MAGA House Republicans have moved the process backwards through their far-right ransom note.

House Republicans voted on Monday to hobble the Office of Congressional Ethics. George Santos, facing multiple investigations and ethics complaints, called the changes "fantastic." The Office of Congressional Ethics, first established in 2008, is a quasi-independent body tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct against members of Congress. It then makes a determination as to whether those allegations are worth investigating further, at which point it makes a referral to the House Ethics Committee, which is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. In 2017, House Republicans voted in conference to subsume the office under the House Ethics Committee, effectively neutering it.

Political ad buyers on both sides of the aisle are keen to return to Twitter after the company said it planned to reverse its ban on political advertising appearing on the platform. The company generated under $3 million in political ad spend for the 2018 US midterms, according to its former chief financial officer. Federal prosecutors on Friday recommended that longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon receive a six-month prison sentence for defying the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. In a 24-page court filing, federal prosecutors said Bannon should also pay a $200,000 fine for his "sustained, bad-faith contempt of Congress." The Justice Department pursued charges against Bannon following a referral from the House recommending a prosecution against the former Trump advisor. After that initial referral, the House went on to hold three other former Trump White House advisors — Mark Meadows, Dan Scavino, and Peter Navarro — in contempt. At the end of the hearing, the House January 6 committee voted unanimously to subpoena Trump to testify.
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said that there were three indicators during Thursday's trading session that suggested the initial market sell-off would fizzle out. Stocks made a stunning reversal on Thursday after the market fought off a hotter-than-expected consumer price index report to snap a six-day losing streak. Anything above plus 4% indicates the market is overbought, while anything below minus 5% indicates the market is oversold. That means traders weren't spooked and is usually a sign the market is dealing with a "misdirection play," according to Cramer. "The people who are still left in this miserable, horrible, no-good market aren't going to dump stocks over something they already knew — that the consumer price index is too hot.
Michael Cohen is urging the DOJ to investigate if Trump kept photocopies of top-secret files. Cohen accused Trump of using "Art of the Deal" tactics to trade these files for other documents. Cohen also wondered aloud why Trump — after being president for four years — didn't attempt to get the documents while he was in office. During its search of Mar-a-Lago on August 8, the FBI seized classified documents, including some marked "top secret." The DOJ is investigating whether Trump broke three federal laws — including the Espionage Act — by keeping the files at his Florida residence.
LAS VEGAS — Jim Marchant, the election-denying Republican nominee for secretary of state in Nevada, has so far been outspent and out campaigned by his Democratic opponent. Davis, a Republican, said he “hadn’t thought much” about whether the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and remained undecided in the secretary of state race. The dynamics in Arizona’s secretary of state race are similar. He and Marchant, as well as Kristina Karamo, the Republican secretary of state nominee in Michigan, are all members of the pro-Trump America First Secretary of State Coalition, though polling shows Karamo’s race is far less competitive. “This could be the last free and fair election in Nevada,” West said.
Bevin Farrand was laid off from her job as a marketing director in 2019 and then started a business. My first two businesses — a yoga business and a life-coaching business — didn't financially sustain me. Over the next 10 years I built my career in brand strategy and digital marketing for companies in personal development, online education, and e-commerce. I needed to pay myself about $4,000 a month, which wasn't possible from the business revenue in the first few months. The other client started at a $2,000 monthly retainer to develop and execute their launch strategy.
