The pattern repeated itself in Wake County, which is anchored by the state capital of Raleigh and its suburbs. While Trump won Wake by 20 points (58%-38%), it was well below his roughly 51-point edge over Haley statewide. Glenn Youngkin in 2021 — Trump also underperformed in suburban areas including Loudoun County and Henrico County. And in Henrico County, a former GOP stronghold that is still filled with many suburban voters who once fully embraced the party's candidates, Trump only won by 11 points (55%-44%).

Under last month's fraud trial judgment, Trump's debt to NY rises by $111,984 in interest per day. Under the final fraud trial judgment, the GOP frontrunner's debt to New York state rises daily by $111,984 in interest. That means every 9 days, Trump owes the state another $1 million in interest. On that same day, the total Trump owes New York will tick up by another $1 million, to $456 million. Former Trump Organization CEO Allen Weisselberg owes $1 million; interest is adding $272 to his total every day.

Prosecutors have asked the judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's upcoming criminal trial in Manhattan to gag him, arguing he can't control himself from inciting his followers to attack witnesses, jurors, and court staff. Under the gag order, Trump would additionally be forbidden from attacking jurors, staff members at the DA's office and the court, and the employees' families. The attacks triggered waves of antisemitic and sexist threats, and an appeals court upheld the gag order that Engoron imposed. Trump could not be trusted with moderating his own comments unless the judge issued a gag order, prosecutors wrote.

Donald Trump's fraud verdict targets three things he values dearly: his cash, his New York business address, and the Trump Organization steering wheel. Otherwise, as Engoron noted in his verdict, Trump, his company, and his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, "are likely to continue their fraudulent ways." In previous years, Trump has settled allegations of fraud involving the Trump Foundation, Trump University, and the 2017 Inaugural Committee, Amer pointed out in closings. The same day James concluded her initial investigation and filed her massive Trump fraud lawsuit, on September 21, 2022, Trump incorporated "Trump Organization II" in what her office worried was an attempt to shift and protect assets. In addition to the $355 million penalty — payback of what the judge deemed “ill-gotten gains” from his spurious financial statements — Trump is required to pay interest on that amount. James’ office calculates that, to date, Trump owes an additional $98.6 million in interest, bringing his total penalty to $453.5 million. Trump used $170 million of the $375 million to pay off a loan on the property. — $60 million, plus interest, from selling the rights to manage a New York City golf course in June 2023. There is still a lot to parse from the ruling and its potential impact on Trump’s business empire, but here’s what we know so far. And Trump himself might have been permanently barred from the New York state real estate industry, something James had requested. The ruling extended the monitor’s role “for no less than three years.”That new governance structure is the reason Judge Engoron cited for not cancelling the Trumps’ business certificates. “The court’s decision to impose governing requirements [on Trump’s businesses] makes the injunction more likely to survive appeal,” Thomas said. But in the high-profile federal inquiries into President Biden and former President Donald Trump over their handling of classified documents, the writers who were supposed to evade the spotlight found themselves in the public glare. In 2017, Biden read to his own ghostwriter from notebooks he had in his home, which contained classified materials. Trump was ultimately charged with federal crimes, while Biden was not. The documents Trump shared were intended to rebut an account about his last days in office — and they were shared not with his own ghostwriter, but someone else’s. More broadly, they are about the impulse of powerful figures to burnish their legacies, and to tell their stories on their own terms.

CNN —Critical days are ahead in Donald Trump’s multiple legal battles. — On Thursday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments over a decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to throw Trump off the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists. Maine has taken a similar step to Colorado but that case hasn’t yet reached the US Supreme Court. Nikki Haley, is now arguing that Trump’s legal entanglements make him a disastrous pick for her party by seizing on the news that he spent more than $50 million from political action committees on legal fees. The day before awarding Carroll $83.3 million in damages — Trump's penance for calling her a lying "whack job" when she told the world he'd sexually assaulted her — jurors heard, firsthand, how rich he was. Punitive damages in defamation cases are supposed to have a deterrent effect, to stop the defamation from happening again. Donald Trump has to cut a fat check, and his appeal of the E. Jean Carroll verdict won't delay that. While he appeals the verdict, Carroll can't touch that money — but neither can Trump. Here, as an example, is the judgment Kaplan issued after last year's Carroll verdict, the one that ordered he pay $5 million in damages. Last time around, for the $5 million verdict, Trump went with cash. The premium is money Trump would never see again, according to a surety executive who spoke on condition of anonymity.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —In 2018, Irish journalist Fintan O’Toole proposed the “Yeats Test” to determine how bad things are in the world. Although … Haley is the last contender standing between former President Donald Trump and the Republican nomination…most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. Polling shows Trump even leads Haley in her home state of South Carolina.”Haley’s quest is going nowhere, wrote Daniel McCarthy. Former South Carolina Gov. The Biden campaign has long been preparing for Trump to win the nomination, but it is acutely aware of polling reflecting Haley’s strength over Biden in a one-on-one matchup. And behind closed doors, the Biden campaign is cheering Haley’s decision to stay in the race as they monitor Trump lashing out at the former South Carolina governor. It has been welcome news for the president’s reelection team to see Haley prolong the Republican contest and force the Trump campaign to use its resources and time to attack her. “Go forth and prosper,” one Biden campaign official said, describing the team’s delight in seeing the Trump-Haley feud continue.

Sections of the deposition, where Trump denied raping Carroll and said she was "not my type," were played for the jury earlier on Thursday. Three times — twice before his testimony, and once afterward — Trump griped loudly about getting a raw deal from Carroll and the court system. Then, minutes before his testimony, and with the jury still not in the courtroom, Trump piped up again. Judge Kaplan concluded that Trump was liable for defaming Carroll when he called her a liar in 2019 and that the second trial would be only on damages. As Carroll and Kaplan then left the courtroom, Business Insider asked them if they had any response to Trump's parting remark.

CNN —Democrats should not make the mistake of underestimating former President Donald Trump. Moreover, they note, Haley was able to win independent voters who theoretically would be more amenable to President Joe Biden than Trump in the fall. Moreover, the number of Republicans who keep saying they won’t vote for Trump under any circumstances, gives Democrats hope that on Election Day, many voters in the GOP won’t turn out. But these arguments downplay the threat Trump will pose to Biden in November by ignoring several fundamentals. Trump is succeeding even though the United States has never had a major presidential candidate saddled with so much legal baggage.

On Monday, Trump's attorney Alina Habba said he intends to take the witness stand in his defense. Trump's two driving impulses — to fight the system and to take the witness stand — will create the judicial equivalent of a car wreck, experts told Business Insider. Alternatively, Trump can get on the witness stand and "try to testify in a narrative fashion," Jones said. Carroll's trial does have a jury, making it harder to "unring that bell" of forbidden testimony, Jones said. Or wager that he'll inflict wounds on himself by taking the witness stand?

Photographer: Hollie Adams/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesFrench President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that Europe must be more assertive on the world stage as it confronts an uncertain future for its relations with the U.S. In a possible nod toward the potential re-election of Donald Trump, Macron said that Europe should charge its own path on consequential issues rather than relying too closely on its ally across the Atlantic. Central to those issues are the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the climate transition, Macron said. Though absent from Davos this year, Trump's potential reelection has been a key topic of conversation at the Alpine resort after he won the Iowa caucuses on Monday.

At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The field of candidates onstage for the fourth Republican presidential debate will be the smallest yet. To qualify for the fourth debate, candidates needed at least 6% support in two national polls or 6% in one national poll as well as two polls from four of the early-voting states — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. During the last debate, Haley called the entrepreneur “scum” after he invoked Haley’s daughter during a critique of TikTok. Without Trump at the debates, Christie has been left without his intended target but has brought him up nonetheless.
